The city of Gent looks gorgeous from up there. The good thing is it’s one of the cheapest bell tower entry cost of 6 euros and you don’t even have to climb the stairs, they have an elevator. Do remember to check out all the floors, it’s created like a museum with machinery, all the bells that were used, etc.

Very interesting. It's a 366 step climb to the top, but you'll be rewarded with fabulous views all around the area. There are intermittent landings where you can take a breather if you need it, particularly the drum room that houses the mechanics.

A clock tower from where the entire city of Ghent can be seen. Ticket is €10 and worth every cent. The view of the city was the best part of my day. There is a museum inside the tower as well. You can go up using the elevator and take the stairs to get down.

Excellent experience, the lift really helps on the way up! Typically tight walking and steps, not for the faint hearted, impressive dragon weather vane and bells, amazing views even on a murky grey day, great history. Very good value at €11 each (Dec 2023).

Wonderful history of the town and belfry... you can climb the stairs or take an elevator. Doesn't go to the bell tower but beautiful landing below with fantastic views of the city of Ghent.

Worth the money more when it’s a clear day! I knew that I had to go up the tower when the day was sunny, and it’s rarely is in the winter. The bell tower interesting stories on the up, you could even catch the music being played.

One of the must visit landmarks in Ghent, which is a small but active city. The lighting at night is definitely more attractive in my opinion as shown in my photos. A short walk through the area brings the visitor to a number of shops for a shopping experience.

If you visit Gent, it is one of the must-see places. I recommend that you set aside at least an hour. If you have a CityCard Gent, you can enter for free; if not, for eight euros. The city view from the five-floor top floor is exquisite. You can also listen to the melodic bells that ring every 15 minutes.

I am usually not the one who likes to climb up high to view the city… but I loved it! There is an elevator, which really helps.

That's a museum and tower at the same time. You can go to the top floor by floor, and each floor has something to see about the tower's history. You can clearly see that it's strategically important. And.. At the top.. Amazing view of the city 😇

Good experience and view of the city. We came during the raining day and the small narrow passage on top was flooding. A little hard to walk while it was dripping water from the top. There is not much to view in the actual tower. And people were walking in both directions on the narrow, slippery stair cases. Kind of scary but still interesting. I wish there were more exhibits inside the tower, especially for the price. You are really just paying for the view.

Nice view from the tower, definitely not for claustrophobic person as the stairs up are very narrow... the staff at cashier was weird, she was confused if she gave us the tickets already before we paid, and when we paid she said she’s not sure if she gave the tickets to us and we said no (as we didn’t receive them), then she said she’s not gonna print us any tickets and we can go without them (probably she didn’t even mark that we visited the castle and put the money to her own pocket)... confusing person.

(Translated by Google) Superb medieval belfry in the heart of the city. Its 90 meters high offers you a unique view of the city center and even beyond. The carillon system as well as the set of bells is worth the detour on its own. It is one of the strong symbols of the city of Ghent. (Original) Superbe beffroi du moyen âge en plein cœur de la ville. Ses 90 mètres de hauteur vous offre une vue unique sur le centre ville et même au de là. Loved the view. The ticket costs €10 and its easy to go upstairs with an elevator. Stairs to go down and the space to actually see from the tower is very tight (consider this if you have claustrophobia). I loved it! No line even tho the weather was super great

Beautiful views of the city. Needs much better traffic flow at the top. We bought our timed ticket online from the phone and walked in 3 minutes later. You climb a few stairs then choose the elevator or a lot more stairs (I believe it said 254). Going up the stairwell was mostly fine until you encountered someone who needed to come down the stairs. The stairs are very narrow because they were designed for the tower guard, not a bunch of tourists. With the many languages it is hard to convey what should be done. We encountered a young lady who was afraid to pass around a corner on some narrow stairs so we shifted to the other side only to be trapped by 30 more people behind the lady. IF I RAN THE TOWER, 1. Only allow people up or down sections of the stairs at rotating times. Use a red light/green light system as they do in construction areas. 2. Make the top a full circle (It appears a closed door is all that prevents this now) and make the traffic move only one way. As it is today the stair people approach from one side and the elevator people the other so you have two opposing flows in a very narrow area. 3. Allow fewer people at the top per time slot. It was packed when we were up there so we wasted a lot of time waiting for people to find the perfect pose. Worth a visit, just know you will waste considerable time waiting around and that you will be brushing against all your fellow tourists at the top.

You will also see a film about how clocks are made. You have to pay attention via the narrow staircase. Well worth it! It is one of the more interesting towers to climb. The view is quite spectacular and you have interesting information and artifacts all the way to the top. My friends and I got lucky and we were just in time to experience the hourly music wheel in action.

Het Belford van Gent offers very nice aerial views of Gent. Going to the top of the tower is easy, as you can take an elevator. I would say the price might be too expensive for what it is. 10€ per person.

I took an early train from Brussels to Ghent. When I arrived at the Bell Tower, it’s just opened with only a few visitors. The ticket office is on the ground floor underneath the stairs. When entering in the building, it’s a large hall. I asked the attendant there and was told this was a trading market in the old time. There are three levels. On the first two levels there are stairs. On the third level there is an elevator to bring you to the top of the tower. The view from the top was amazing. The vibrant and charming Ghent is displayed in front of your eyes.

Best building in Ghent! I passed by and all I could see was a giant cat head complete with whiskers (flagpoles for hanging flags on holidays 🇧🇪) :3 I like this so much! I even drew cat faces on the postcards and my friends loved them :D Ah yes the staff was the friendliest I’ve had in Ghent and I think I could sell them on the idea of the tower being a cat head :D The view is awesome. All in all well worth visiting :)

The views from the top are a not to miss experience. The stairs are also not to miss! They have a rope on one side and a metal handrail on the other. Thank heaven. It’s a self-guided tour so time is what you make it.

The views are quite lovely, but it’s a bit of a struggle to stay and watch since the path around the tower when you get to the top is super narrow. So unless you’re happy keeping people waiting behind you, you kind of have to keep moving. The stairway coming down is kind of scary, especially if you have a shoe size larger than 6. It’ll probably be easier to climb up than down, but since there’s no way to escape that, it’s worth not wearing heels or something.

Certainly worth a visit if you want a bird's eye view of the old city and beyond. The 'beyond' reveals a great mass of wind turbines to the west! Staying for at least one play of the carillon is also worthwhile (and somewhat loud).

4-star experience for me, as it's definitely not that impressive for the tax you pay. Nice view and some floors of small history and bells, but overall that's it. Something to note: try to be on the second floor around exact hour like xx:00 to hear really nice music coming from the bell!

Beautiful view of the Ghent and close by cathedrals and markets from up top. There are around 250 stairs and they get narrower as you go up. So, preferably take the lift while going to the top and come down via the stairs. The top may get also get crowded if you don't follow this path because that's how the markers are set up. There are also chambers which you can visit while coming down that talk about the history of the Belfry.

This tower has lovely views of Gent, and surprisingly enough it also has an elevator from the 1st floor to the top. So you only have to climb the stairs for one floor. It was a nice touch and it also makes it accessible to a wider range of people. The ticket costs 8€ for adults, but I’d argue it is a fair price considering the elevator and the views. It might be just me, but I always like to see how a city looks from above, and Gent did not disappoint me. The view from the tower is panoramic and I was lucky to have nice weather too. On the ground floor there is also a small shop, where you can buy some souvenirs, but don’t expect too much.

  • 5/5 Mariana Y T. 4 years ago on Google
Great place. You can use the lift or the stairs (same price). You can learn about bells (great video, they are really difficult to be produced), about Gent's history and its dragon and you will have the best city's view!!!! I loved this place.

Gent is an interesting town. The city centre is in fact more interesting and livelier than Antwerp. I suggest going up the tower for a beautiful view of the surround cityscape. It offers you great photo opportunities. The tower itself is well maintained and clean. You have to of course buy a ticket to go up. Most certainly worth it.

I give five stars because I like the structure of this tower very much. However, I do not recommend people to make a tour during coronavirus since that you cannot use the lift. This reason makes you to walk a lot of stairs to go up which is good for health but kill you automatically due to the idea that they need a makeover. It is a pity because the trip could be more enjoyable if those stairs would be taken care of! Moreover, it is like the stairs have being been like that since the twelfth century! And nothing to say about the important figures that they are kept inside which are not protected like the dragon, for instance and all deteriorated. You can even see some can drinks next to the walls or windows. Summing up, we must take care more about the historical facts/monuments of Ghent unless with the passing of time all will fall down and the new generations would not be able to see anything. They should also put some translations about the historical facts of the tower because not all is into other languages and people could not understand or miss out important details. Least but no last, a professional person should be there to give the tour to make it more attractive since that it is a pity to put a video about how bells work or are made in Dutch language on a screen to see without ending. I mean, a well-organization would make people to go more there. Finally, it is not good to go in a hurry, if it is close to six or six something be sure that your visit would be over before reaching the peak of the tower. I would like to end my experience by saying that I love the location of the tower, you can always take a seat and enjoy the view andd the surroundings and the outside beauty of the tower too :)

(Translated by Google) Since 1402, city privileges have been kept in a suitcase in the secret of the belfry. The dragon, which has stood on the tower since 1377, not only kept an eye on the city, but was also the symbolic treasure guardian of the belfry. In 1539 all privileges were transferred to the Lille Court of Auditors. Only in 1578, under the Calvinist regime and at the height of the battle against Philip II, were they returned to Ghent and stored in the town hall. From 1633, the secretory was only used to store the archives of the Guild of Saint Michael. Watchtower St Nicholas' Church served as the first watchtower until 1442. After 1442 the keepers took up residence in the finished belfry. Together with the whistleblowers, these guards served until 1869. Together with the six city trumpeters and the schalmeiers, they formed the corps of 'city watchmen'. Fire in particular was the greatest danger in the city. Clocks were initially only used for church purposes. Due to the rise of the cities, the clocks were increasingly switched on in everyday life. The storm clock or bank clock, called the Klokke Roeland, which was already hung in the early hull of the belfry in 1325, was also used as an hour clock from 1378. Her sound was preceded by a warning signal on three smaller bells of different tones. The whole was called the quatrillon, cadrillon, later, after an increase in the number of bells, the carillon. The carillon was gradually expanded and counted 53 bells after the restoration in 1982. In 1993, the Robert bell joined the whole with its brilliant sound.

Interesting to see and visit. Unfortunate that some explanations have not been translated from dutch to English. The view is definitely worth it at the top and it was a nice experience that we recommend. Enjoy

Second stop in my Euro Trip. I went up this beautiful belfort and saw the view of the whole city. It was really really nice. They have an elevator to take you to the top and then you have a nice walk down the tower. More reviews from my Euro Trip to come.

Beautiful view from the tower, with an elevator to the top. You can decide yourself if you wanna take the stairs down or the elevator. The money is worth the view.

Must visit place in Gent. On Sunday morning there were only few people. Elevator will bring you to the top of tower where you see whole city.

The views from up there are amazing. It was my first stop upon arriving to Ghent and I recommend it to have a look to the city.

Let's start by saying this is an absolutely beautiful and iconic tower from the outside. It is one of the many gorgeous historical buildings that make Ghent one of the most beautiful city centers in the world. The rest of the review is for the inside. There is some historical placards to read but there are really 3 key attractions to the Belfort: the view from the top, the carillion and it's mechanics and formerly used bells, and the dragon from the top. Was a pleasant time, but not worthy of a bucket list visit.

Went today right at 10am and was one of the first ones to go up. You can take the stairs but they are circular and somewhat dangerous especially if you are older and other people are coming up or down so I opted for the elevator. Great views at the top of the entire city of Ghent. Very windy make sure to bring a jacket if it’s cooler outside the day you go

Even toward the end of 14mi/22.5km walking around Ghent to see everything I could in a day, the climb was worth it! There's nothing quite like experiencing this wonderful city from up high.

Price was fair for students, too expensive for adults. Views from the top floor are amazing. The museum was just as expected. Missing a star because the handrails were dirty.

It was a very nice experience visiting the Belfry. Everybody had to climb the first 80 steps and the lift was available only after the 1st level. But I definitely recommend using the stairs up and down to experience how guards might have used them in olden days.

What a view! This is a great place to see the view of the entire city of Ghent. Be aware that there are a lot of stairs and that they are "old ages" stairs, so I wouldn't recommend this place for old people.

One of the main attractions of Ghent, stunning 360 views of the whole city. I saw some reviews mentioning that it was very disorganised going to the top, our experience was very pleasant (maybe cause it was a Monday). Basically you are meant to take the lift up and the stairs down, surprisingly the stairs down felt very short Highly recommend getting tickets in advance if visiting weekends and peak times.
