I completely agree with some of the other reviews here which detailed some issues with this place. I am currently living here and wanted to try and write this review so that those looking for places can be aware of them. Unfortunately I can't say I would recommend Tramworks over other alternatives. The staff are nice, the building is nice (reception area, gym, studyrooms, etc..) and the building is only a 10 minute walk from Glasgow uni. However, due to a number of big issues I would advise others reconsider the options available. My biggest issue with this place is the keycard system - I found this to be extremely un-transparent on behalf of Unite students, who failed to mention anywhere in the process of booking that the electricity in the room will only stay on while the key is in the holder... This means every time you have to leave the flat, even for a moment, all your electrical devices will have to restart upon returning to your room. This is EXTREMELY annoying as I have a desktop and monitor and these both have to restart even if I'm only going to the laundry room for 2/3 minutes or bringing my rubbish out to the bins. Another BIG issue is the wifi speed in the building. Without fail, I've had to reconnect to the wifi after a period of minutes on end without connection. This usually occurs multiple times a day, and has done so EVERY SINGLE DAY I've lived here. This is ridiculous for a halls being advertised as having 'High Speed Internet'. I've taken multiple speed readings on different months and have found on many occasions the speeds are EXTREMELY slow, like having to watch youtube videos on 360p slow. Without trying to sound bigoted, I think it's also worth taking into consideration that it seems the majority of residents here are Chinese students. I really don't want to be misinterpreted as racist because I'm genuinely not, but just hear me out. Most of my own flatmates are Chinese and they are all very friendly and we all get along. But...Chinese students definitely have a tendency to stick to their own. Even though I'm more than happy to be friends with anyone regardless of where they come from, I've found, from experience, it can be really quite difficult to form real friendships with Chinese students. This is probably due to the big differences in cultures as well as the language barrier. For UK/western students this can be quite disappointing and frustrating especially if most of your flatmates are Chinese. So I would consider that also when deciding whether you want to live here. Moving into halls can be a bit of a lottery, in terms of who you live with and ideally you want to maximise the possibility you'll be living with people who you could become good friends with and possibly live with in following years. If I were to go back and make the decision on where to live now, I definitely would have tried to go to the university's halls next door instead or else use Roomshare and find a room in a student flat.

I’m staying here right now, and it’s a huge disappointment. Apart from the absence of flexible dates for short-term stays during these crazy Covid times (I will be charged a whole unused month, which is a lot for this accommodation) and the card key system which turns off electricity in your room, there is black mould in the shower, the emergency number never picks up, no one at reception during the weekend and the unbearable noise after 11 pm from the undergraduates residing at the next property.

A disclaimer: I have never actually been to Unite Tramworks, but have formed my opinion on the basis of Unite's policies and correspondence with staff. I booked a semester-long stay with Unite Tramworks seeking to be closer to University of Glasgow and my colleagues. Recently, I found out that my visa processing would be delayed due to COVID-19 craziness. When I asked for a flexible check-in due to the circumstances that were out of my control, I was denied and told by a staff member that "Unite is a business and its priority is to make money." Sure, I can understand that Unite has to make money somehow, but a better compromise could have been worked out with the students who are struggling with these unprecedented times to begin with. It is quite fascinating to see how Unite is taking advantage of students during COVID-19 visa processing delays, and won't change their policy to better serve the student residents. Since it is so late in the game, my tenancy will begin in a few days. I am basically locked in and will have to OVERPAY 620 pounds sterling for a month I will not even be there, and will have to, eventually, reside there in October. A few key words to wrap up my review - greedy, pathetic, and overpriced. I am regretting this booking thoroughly, so, students, please make better decisions than I did. Cheers!

I completely agree with Nestor Skiadas' review. I lived at Tramworks (Unite Students Glasgow) for a full year and I encountered almost every type of problem there is. My first flat was mostly fine, with a nice kitchen and view, but the power in my room kept turning off and maintenance had to be called to turn it back on every time - even though it could be fixed by just flicking a switch (behind a locked door in the hallway). The shower was also clogged when I moved in. Most of my flatmates barely spoke English, and they didn't really seem to understand me. In addition to this, two of them avoided me completely, which made it impossible to communicate. (English is my 3rd language and I understand not everyone is fluent in it, but communication is necessary.) I decided to move because of a combination of issues: 1) My flatmates avoided me and I didn't feel like I could communicate with them. 2) My flatmates kept rubbish in the common hallway, as well as cardboard boxes which blocked the entrance. 3) There was clear evidence of smoking in the kitchen. 4) Power in my room kept turning off. I moved to a different flat within the same building at Tramworks, but as I first moved in, I discovered the kitchen had a large mold problem. The staff didn't warn me of the obvious issue, even though they knew about it. I didn't check the flat beforehand because I assumed it was a near identical flat. It wasn't. As we later found out, there was a water pipe leaking behind the kitchen wall. Surely this could happen almost anywhere and can be attributed to bad luck, but the building is only a couple years old and practically brand new. The water leak in the kitchen took months to fix, and I had to fight to make the staff believe it was not in a liveable condition. The kitchen retained a distinct mouldy and wet smell, and I didn't want to store any food items in there. Compensation for the large issue was minimal, and we were given an amazon voucher for a tiny amount as a token of goodwill. The tone of the person in a managerial position was patronising and insulting when I talked to them about the issue which was taking months to fix. Every Tuesday morning at around 10:30 the fire alarm would sound, and would stay on for what felt like an eternity (around 30 seconds) and then sound again a couple minutes later. The alarm is REALLY loud and every room has an individual fire alarm. Fire safety is important, but the weekly fire alarm tests seemed like overkill. There was no on-site recycling for most of the year, and when red bins finally appeared in the bin area, a staff member advised me not to use them. Keep in mind there are signs on every flat's noticeboard saying 'please recycle'. My room was noisy, as it was next to the smoking area in the courtyard. People drunkenly screaming, laughing and playing music at 3, 4 or 7am was extremely common, and despite complaints it persisted. All of my flatmates were extremely annoyed by this. One major issue which isn't mentioned ANYWHERE when booking, is the key card system. The key card needs to be inserted in a slot inside the room in order to get the power turned on. This means that if you have a guest over, you have to leave them in the dark and without power if you are absent from the room. Having a desktop pc in your bedroom is impossible unless you somehow manage to get a second card. The key card system also means you WILL forget your card inside your room several times. When you don't forget your card, the lock may still randomly stop working and leave you locked out of your room. Doing laundry is fairly expensive, and you often need to run your clothes through the dryer twice. £3 for washing and 2 x £1.70 for drying every time is not cheap. The front doors of the building had an automatic opening system installed, which kept jamming all the time. Some positive elements include nice and friendly maintenance staff, a common area with a ping pong table, and even a small gym. All in all, the price is terribly high for the quality. Like my flat number said: 0/6.

Small room, tiny desk, alarm test at 10:30am after a long night shift at work. Doors lock automatically, so if you forget the key in your room, you're boned. You will forget the key in your room a lot, because you need it to get power. You can't fool the thing where you put the card for power, it reads the card often. Roommates barely know any English - they've tried to talk to me but they can't (and this is coming from a foreigner who has English as their second language). 3 washers and 3 dryers for the entire building, which you pay for using an app, which is guaranteed to not work when you need it to. The accommodation next door has the exact same machines and they cost about £1.10 less per wash and dry, even though those take cash. You'll jam the entrance door and the flat door and the room door when you move in, you'll jam the room door when you go to the kitchen (use the jacket you've hanged for extra points), you'll jam the fire escape side door when you're repairing your bike. You'll detest going to do the laundry because of the sheer amount of doors between you and the laundry room and because your room won't have any power so you can't leave the desktop PC on. The shower has no water pressure setting, just a heat dial and a button to turn on and off. The shower uses a glass door apparatus, but the bottom corners of the glass door are not covered with anything, so water just spills on the floor.

I stayed there for a year. If it wasn't for the really nice staff, the place would be completely unbearable. Basically, the trash outside is always overflowed, we had a spider and flies infestation, and the keycard system is a mess. Also, the room space is minimal, above all considering the price you are paying for. When I arrived, at night and clueless about the city, no one would open from reception for quite a considerable time... All in all, I wouldn't recommend it.

I have lived in Tramworks for 3 years. The staff (Jody, Laura, etc) at reception has always been nice to me and available whenever I needed help. The room was big enough for me (it one of the very few accommodations that offer a bedroom with private bathroom) and the kitchen was equipped with everything one expects. They also offer a private parking as well as a launderette (with both washing machines and dryers) and a study room. The place is a10 minute-walk from the GU, so it's a perfect solution for those studying there.

All but 2 members of staff clearly couldn't care less. Management restructure turned Tramworks from a great place to be, to a dull one. Look somewhere else

Terrible management. I was asked to move out twice in half a year for water pipe fixing and refurbishment. I understand that there are cases that require tenants' cooperation, but the frequency here is unusual. An extra star for the friendly staff here. Edit: 1. I withdrew one star because of my recent experience. They asked me to moved back from 18:00 to next 9:00 but without reactivating the key. What made it worse was that nobody in reception until 19:00 of that day. I was locked out with my baggage for about one hour. 2. Irregular fire alarm test and no hot water after that. It is said that they would test fire alarm system every Tuesdays. However in the last 13 months, they sometimes tested it irregularly due to unknown reasons. For this week, they tested it twice without any notification (Tuesday and Friday). Since last November, hot water on the ground and fourth floors has consistently been unavailable after tests. And the heaters would also be unavailable in G02 (4th floor not tested yet) after fire alarm tests. Update: they tested fire alarm system 16 times in 60 minute (from 14:20 to 15:20, 2023/11/21). 3. Terrible WiFi service. The apartments of Unite Students group in Glasgow are using WiFi service provided by a company called Glide. You can search for Glide and view the reviews from google. They explained why it is terrible very well. 4. They are sending spam emails through their own info email address and "MyUnite" app. For example, they are sending advertisements for a company called "Blackbullion". You cannot unsubscribe these emails. Hence you can only block this address but you will also lose the info related to your accomodation in future. 5. If you have to live here, it is better to pick a room that does not face the street. Local teenagers will sing, yell, and shout in the midnight hours, especially on Saturday nights, across Kelvinhaugh Street. Furthermore, Glasgow has a so-called 'boy-racers' problem (see https://shorturl.at/ABKY0 and https://shorturl.at/clDHM). Some people drive cheap cars with modified engines, which causes noise that is exceptionally loud. Unfortunately, Kelvinhaugh Street is their chosen route. If you want to have a quiet sleep, choose a room facing the yard instead of the street.

Awful experience... Always read the policy agreements. I moved into Teamworks in 2022. As I came into the room, it was dirty, the bathroom had horrible brown stains and splashes all over the walls. The worst part was the MOULDY bathroom ceiling. There was black mould on the ceiling where there were clearly leaks and cracks in the plaster. The stench of mould was overwhelming. I told my problems to reception and they said they can't really do anything: "all the other rooms are already booked or taken". They said the cleaner must've not come around yet (I came on time for my allocated time slot). I was told I cannot give back my keys and refuse tenancy because it starts when you pick up the keys from reception not after you view the room. I was even told by a receptionist that I can sleep in the common room, on the couch that night, while I wait for the cleaner to arrive the next day. I still had 24 hours to dispute the room but the manager wasn't on site so I had to email. I still wasn't able to cancel tenancy over a potential health threat in my room (black mould). They sent out some painters a week later to PAINT over the mould. The issue with mould wasn't really fixed, it was just painted over. In the end I had to find a replacement tenant to cancel my tenancy agreement. Maybe I was just unlucky with my experience, but my situation was handled atrociously and I moved out two weeks later. It was a really stressful experience and I would suggest anyone avoid it.
