4000 years of history. Really fascinating visit of Göteborg city all through ages. Exhibition is rich and full of games and quizz for little ones to make the visit fun and interactive. Really worth to take time

Entry is free with a student ID. Great museum with a great collection, not too many people and relatively quiet. Well laid out with no backtracking. I spent two hours here.

Nice experience, I really liked the story of the Gothenburg city and the land where it was built. The exhibits were interesting, diverse, and presented within a well-explained context. However, if you don’t have much time, I would much rather recommend prioritising the Konstmuseum or Röhsska museum. They have much sleeker layout and make greater first impression. At times the labels were obscured (hidden behind the object) or missing English translation, but the exposition was overall understandable. There are also some hidden/unavailable rooms, like the temporary exhibition which I could not find. I really liked introducing the social context to the exhibition and how the labels posed questions, inviting the visitors to interpret historical events based on the presented facts. It was a nice approach to presenting history and the visitor path was fairly interactive.

Nice museum with interesting stuff in it. However some of the items are prototype. The model box gives you very nice idea about how things was in the old ages. It worth to visit during rainy day!

If you are interested in history and visits Gothenburg this is the place to go. Once you start the tour you will embark on a trip that takes you from the stone age to modern day clothing fashion. Most of it spans from the viking age to medieval times when Gothenburg finally appeared (and survived) on the map. You can see a lot of illustrations, objects and histories at the same time that you walk next to an actual viking ship. There is also quite a few weapons like swords, spears etc., but also quite some tools and jewellery. You can also take part in the mystery of the silverheart found in the city of Nya Lödöse, Gothenburgs forerunner - but you will get to know more about that when visiting.

Situated in a pretty part of the city and reasonably priced to enter, the Gothenburg city museum is a must-visit if every in Gothenburg. The museum succeeds at exhibiting several millennia of the city and the surrounding area's history, ranging from natural history, the Viking times, middle ages and to modern times. They have really friendly members of staff working at the museum too. Definitely worth spending a few hours here while in Gothenburg!

A good value experience. Thorough history of Gotenburg and interesting collection of the social evidence through clothing, furniture, paintings and text to give the story. Really enjoyed seeing the mechanical calculator and the basement display had a magic to it. Of course the Viking ship was great to see, and surrounded by artifacts and quotes from the sagas. Very satisfying couple of hours in the museum.

Really wonderful little museum. Was fascinating to read about the beginnings of people living in the area, the formation of the town, its inspiration and so much more. It’s well laid out and extremely reasonable (£10 for two tickets!). Was expecting something that would take up and hour but it took up almost half the day. Was a pleasure to visit and I would highly recommend it.

Very nice museum in the center of Göthenburg! If you only want to see one museum while you stay there, make sure to stop here! It will give you a very good overview of the vikings and the city itself. Many interesting facts! Students can get in for free. Adults pay 5/6€.

Undescribable experience a must see place. If you are a student bring your student card because entrance is then free. You will have opportunity to see more about City history and to feel it’s soul from the Past.

(Translated by Google) In addition to the rich variety and well-preserved artworks in the museum, from historical relics to modern art, the design layout and atmosphere of the museum are also very relaxing, and it is easy to let people stroll through the afternoon. There are many places to rest when you are tired, and there is also a children's rest area. The preparation is very careful, and if you have someone who has studied Nordic mythology, you will also smile when you come in. It is a place that families, couples, and even friends who love history will love! !!

Great place to know about the history of the city. There are vikings artefacts, even the remainings of a ship. Pre historic pieces can also be seen.

Really expansive museum with a broad number of things to discover more about. Easy 5 stars, as the entrance fee is minimal, for adults its roughly 6,5€ and for students its free admission. Payable with Credit card. Whole museum can be covered in 2 hours if you rush a bit on certain sections, but 3-4 hours would be recommended. Museum was pretty empty on the weekdays, so if possible and you want to avoid the crowds, plan your visit for the weekdays.

Tolles modernes Museum.

Visited the Gothenburg City Museum on a quiet Saturday morning. They offer a choice of single-entry or year-long passes covering four Gothenburg museums for SEK 130. It's important to note that the year-long ticket is valid until December 31st. The museum provides a concise history of Gothenburg from Viking ships to the Volvo era, making it a must-visit for newcomers. Families will appreciate the kids' play area, and there's a souvenir shop worth exploring.

It was much better if ancient articles were described chronologically as well.

  • 5/5 Tu N. 1 year ago on Google
The museum is an informative one for visitors to know more about Gothenburg’s history and culture. I love the concept that ordinary Gothenburgers submit their subjects/stories for the museum to exhibit, you get to know the city not only from a grand scale but also from perspectives of ordinary people living their ordinary life in Gothenburg. Plus, it’s free for student haha.

  • 5/5 Patrick H. 1 year ago on Google
Free admission for under 20s which is nice. Lovely exhibitions with great info, worth a visit if you want to know more about the city.

  • 4/5 Eva S. 3 years ago on Google
Cool city museum, but somehow it feels too cramped. Surely there's a lot more to Gothenburg than just 2 levels of exhibition? I learned so much about this "artificial" town here, and I found it interesting, too bad that they crammed too many things in the last part of the museum (the 1800s) and what happened after that? Was that the purpose of Urbanium on the basement floor? Not really sure. I feel the museum needs modernisation a little bit.

As a museum about a city, it's really good. Beautiful building, comfortable facility, massive span of time presented, perfectly located. Yummy cafe. I'm into art museums. It's not an art museum really. But if you want to know how this place got to where it is, this is your jam.

  • 5/5 Prashant S. 1 year ago on Google
It's a good place to visit over weekends. Not too crowded except the kids play area. You could easily spend 2-3 hours here. If you are planning to visit other museums in Gothenburg then you should also consider getting the membership card.

+Nice big building. +Entrance price. +Toilets, storageboxes and souvenirshop. -the expectations were greater than with what you finally got to see. So much history and really little to see. Or maybe just few archaeological finds. -Not everything is in English available.

The museum offers a good view on the development of Gothenburg over the years. There are numerous artifacts on display from as far as 12,000 years ago. The museum is laid out in a good, chronological order, but guidance on following the order could be much better.

  • 4/5 C S. 2 years ago on Google
Very interesting and with a large focus on the Gothenburg area. We wished for some more objects though, some exhibitions felt more like reading a history book on a wall than being in a museum. In the prehistoric exhibition the English texts were written in light color on a light background and almost impossible to read

  • 5/5 Daniëlle F. 5 years ago on Google
Very nice museum in Gothenburg about the history of the city and of Sweden in general. They also have a big area particularly about the Viking era which we really enjoyed. The museum is quite big so expect to be spending some time here if you want to see everything. Definitely recommend going here!

  • 4/5 Marco A. 1 year ago on Google
Overall it is a good museum. However, there are some rooms that lack information in English. I'd appreciate a QR code to better follow up the content. Besides that, the exhibit focused on the city jubileum is really nice. Also, don't miss the room dedicated to the museum gems. If you are planning to visit different museums, it's a nice option to get the museum card. This way you can visit 4 different museums for only 130 SEK.

Worthy museum..with nice exponates from Gotheborg/Sweden history. Although a bit outdated (as presentation), the museum keeps you busy and attracted. Adult price just 65 sek

  • 4/5 Alessandra M. 2 years ago on Google
Interesting museum about the history of Gothenburg, from its origins to the present times. The exhibitions are placed in a way that it is easy to follow in chronological order, without getting too much tired. There are even exhibitions about Vikings and prehistory. However, I found the prehistory exhibition a little bit confusing in the way the panels were written, as they seemed more to ask questions rather than to summarise what is known. Overall, I would advice to visit the museum, especially the sections about the city's history, which is clearly the strongest selling point of this place.

This was one of the few places I had an opportunity to visit in Gothenburg. It met all my expectations, a place to store my backpack which was free, clean bathrooms, and great/informative exhibits. For the viking stuff the designers really tried to construct a dark vibe, which was a nice touch.

Judgement number 2,447. I don't blame you guys if you don't choose mine to read. The name is "city museum" so you can expect to learn about how Gotenburg became this beautiful city. Nice place to visit, well organized and almost perfectly maintained. Some background on the vikings as well.

Quite a nice place to better understand the history of the place that we are at. For those with kids, head direct to L3 although it could be better design with some history in mind but it's for kids to have fun. I would recommend starting from the stairs to the right of the baggage location. It heads straight up to the pre historical timeline. Could be better designed though for avoid moving in a reverse location.

After living in Gothenburg for five years, I finally took the opportunity to visit the city museum. It was well worth a trip and we found the exhibits to be very interesting and well presented. Maybe less interesting if you’re just passing through the city? But definitely great for people who know the area and who love local history.

(!) Do not look at the photos if you do not want spoilers. A museum with exhibitions from Göteborg and the area around it from prehistoric times to the modern age. It also features Sweden's only exhibited viking ship. However, there is not much of it remaining after the test of time. There are also many other interesting things to see from the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th century.
