The tomb of the Roman legions for their deceased general Drusus is a historic watchtower at the southern end of Mainz city center in the immediate vicinity of the citadel. I found it very significant that a waiter at the local Café Zitadelle couldn't do anything with the name, even though the Drususstein is located directly behind the café. It can be reached via a side staircase next to the citadel. The cenotaph dates back to 9 BC. and is therefore one of the oldest buildings in the city. Unfortunately you cannot enter the tower. It is located on the edge of a park-like area that is ideal for picnics and stands alone. In and of itself there isn't that much to see here.... ;)

A large stone is unfortunately somewhat hidden behind the citadel.

Roman cenotaph from Roman times in commemoration of the campaigns of the Roman general Drusus. Although at the time it was taller, currently about 20m are preserved, it is made with limestone rigs and red sandstone. It is currently in a conservation period.

Beautiful to look at, unfortunately during our visits the tower was under construction, therefore inaccessible. There is a sitting area right behind with nice views of Citadelle. Visited in May 2022.

It was under a green net so you could not seen anything.

Citadel Mainz, great view over Mainz! The Drusus stone, an old contemporary witness, around 9 BC. Currently packed green for restoration. Hopefully he can be seen again soon!

(Translated by Google) -definitely worth seeing- The Drususstein (also called Eigelstein or Eichelstein) is an almost 20 m high, originally solid block of cast masonry. Researchers now largely agree that this is the structural remains of the cenotaph (mock tomb) mentioned by ancient authors such as Eutropius or Suetonius for the Roman general Drusus. The Roman troops under his command erected the cenotaph after his death in 9 BC. in Roman Mogontiacum, today's Mainz.
