I visited Wartburg Castle for the first time. The parking lot is only about 5 minutes walk away from the entrance below the castle. 5€ day ticket. Admission to the Castle Museum: 12€ for adults. The courtyard of the castle can be visited without a ticket. Masks are mandatory within the museum. The tour was informative and really very nicely designed. Very well maintained interiors and lots of descriptions. I've read every single sign! Unfortunately, there was generally little information. The history of the castle is reproduced lifelessly and there is hardly any emotional contact with these magnificent rooms. In addition, the employees on site were mostly unfriendly or arrogant. Once I was hit very unkindly from behind, I should not touch the walls, although obviously I did not intend to do so and even had my hands in my pockets. An absolute impudence! In addition, I was greeted unfriendly directly at the entrance, during my visit and even at the museum shop in the end. Wow! I have rarely experienced anything like this. It seems as if the employees at the Wartburg are frustrated with their workplace. There is also a photo ban throughout the museum and the employees run around the visitors like hyenas to control everyone, not to use their mobile phones. Very unacceptable. I am in many exhibitions, but this experience at the Wartburg was unique. I was also disappointed that Martin Luther's time at the Wartburg is told in a completely mindless way. There is hardly any information about his experiences there and also an extensive presentation of the ridiculous situation with the inkwell and devil. The content design really leaves much to be desired. 3 Stars for the building and beautiful restoration and art works.

Yup. Gotta go here. It's even worth the hike up the hill, if you're in shape. There area several good nature trails including a Luther heritage trail. The castle tour is well worth the price. Great info. Beautiful rooms. The castle has great views, an okay cafe and, of course, the Luther history going for it.

A nice castle with rich history streching from its construction in 1067 to 1999, when it was officially made a UNESCO world heritage site. Tour was highly interesting, and the castle is middle-sized but there is much to see. This is the castle where Martin Luther translated the new testament from Greek to German in 1521. Astounding view from the south tower over the valley at a height of 500 meters(1600 feet). Inner decoration is nice as well, detailed mosiacs and late Romanesque architecture are quite impactful. This is the ideal castle.

The Castle's location is incredible! Great view of some parts of the city at the entrance of the Castle! The little hike up to the entrance gives one an opportunity to work one's heart. Attending staff are quite pleasant. The Castle is very well maintained. Guided tour highly recommended for knowledge purpose!

Well it has to be a five star. Magic place ok n the top of a hill. Some bits very old but a lot is newer. Don't let that spoil you experience. Go on the tour, well worth the money. English tour at 13.30

It was one of the best castles I have visited. I recommend going early to avoid the crowds. You can buy tickets online to avoid them selling out during peak tourist season, but you can also buy them on site. The ticket office is past the drawbridge but before the second gate area. Remember to buy a photo pass with your ticket if you want to take photos during the tour.

  • 5/5 Yusuki A. 2 years ago on Google
if you want to enter inside of castle and museum, you should buy ticket online from website in advance. Then you can have nice experience in the castle. you need 20 mins walk from car parking btw due to a steep slope, so plan your travel schedule including this.

Interesting castle to visit, English tour only at 1.30pm but you can scan a downloadable audio guide(Q- code on your ticket) and join a German tour and listen on your phone. Ear phones recommend or low volume with phone to your ear.

Awesome. They have an English tour guide but check the time. She is softly spoken but is quite knowledgeabl. I went today 8th of January and it was quite cold minus 5 with a little biit of snow. But the interior is nice and warm. The cafe also has an english waitress. Might be quite packed in peak periods.

You could only visit the castle's museum and inside with a guide tour and I prefer to check those out on my own. It was a plus point though that the castle itself had a description in several languages. The most disappointing was that you had to pay to go up to the smaller tower after you've had paid your ticket. Although the castle itself was truly mesmerising and beautiful.

(Translated by Google) A guided tour through the old walls, which does not take up much time, is highly recommended. Overall, my expectation (triggered by various TV reports) was significantly higher, which is why I unfortunately only give 4 stars here. Nice walks in the area!

(Translated by Google) The Wartburg was the meeting point of the fraternities in 1817. Martin Luther translated the Bible here when he was banned from the Reich as Junker Jörg. From the Wartburg you have an impressive view of the fraternity monument. Saint Elisabeth worked here and lived in the Wartburg. She became known through the rose miracle. The world-famous armory was brought abroad as spoils of war.

So many castles in this country and my castle hopping list is rather long and getting longer, yet so little time😂. There is something mystical and powerful about castles and I am fascinated by the rich history. This is the best preserved Romanesque castle. To avoid crowds, we travelled to the castle in the morning and on a weekday. Parking:€5 flat rate. Depending on your fitness level, it takes 10 mins or so to walk up as any self-respecting medieval castle is built perched on a hill and surrounded by fairytale- like woodlands. Allow at least half a day to visit. It is extra €2 if you intend to take any photos indoors, the cashier will hand you a sticker. Admission to the castle courtyard is free of charge, unfortunately no guided tours can be carried out at the moment. By car, follow the street signs for Wartburg that take travelers from the A4 Autobahn off at the "Eisenach-Ost" exit. Drive through the town onto Wartburgallee and follow the winding road off the B19 up to the castle. This place is worth a visit and we are already planning another trip to discover the Thüringer Wald soon.

(Translated by Google) One of the famous castles in Germany and very well preserved. You can park below the castle and get to the castle either on foot or with a shuttle (for a fee). The visit is very interesting, as many historically significant events happened at the castle. On the one hand, of course, the time when Luther translated the Bible as Junker Jörg, but also the Singers' War. A visit is definitely highly recommended.

Beautiful castle that has a great deal of history and consideration. I have visited about half a dozen castles in the UK but this by far exceeds them in its restoration quality as well as it's views. The information is in German and English, there are restaurants on site and they have materials in many languages for reading about the castle (although again only German and English in the exhibitions).

Welcome to Wartburg Castle! According to legend, the castle's origins date back to 1067. The surviving main castle building, the 12th century palas (great hall), a gem of late Romanesque architecture, still bears traces of its former glory. As the main seat of the landgraves, the castle was a pre-eminent centre of artistic endeavour where all of the fine arts were celebrated. It once echoed to the songs of Walther von der Vogelweide and inspired a number of epic poems by Wolfram von Eschenbach. This was the setting of the fabled Battle of the Bards, a tale immortalised in Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser. Wartburg Castle was also the home of Saint Elisabeth, still revered to this day, and it provided a refuge for the exiled Martin Luther, who translated the New Testament into German here. The Wartburg Festival of 1817, organised by the student fraternities, celebrated the achievements of Luther, the Reformation and the Battle of Leipzig. It was the first popular declaration of sentiment for a unified and independent nation state. Wartburg Castle was the setting for all of these crucial points in German history – as a mighty fortress and splendid residence and as a place of safety, shelter and retreat for its inhabitants through centuries past. Throughout its history the castle has always remained relevant. However, the buildings were only renovated and redecorated in the 19th century, when the medieval architecture was restored and supplemented in parts by new additions. The outstanding example illustrating the concept of art in the 19th century is without doubt the ceremonial hall in the main castle building (palas), which now provides an amazing backdrop for the famous Wartburg concerts during the summer season as well as a number of other events. The Wartburg Castle art collection with its treasures spanning eight centuries was created at the recommendation of Goethe nearly 200 years ago. On a guided tour of the castle's rooms or a visit to the museum – with its famous paintings by Lucas Cranach, priceless tapestries and furniture, Tilman Riemenschneider sculptures and Renaissance arts and crafts – you are surrounded at every step by history, culture and the arts. The many events, from the Summer Nights festival to theatre and the historical Christmas market, attract visitors from around the world and bring the ancient walls to life.

this castle has a long history and has experienced many renovations. Some room has been luxuriously refurnished. It is located high on a hill. Martin Luther has translated the germany Bible here. Goethe has also visited here. Better take the guiding tour, it is about an hour, and the guide speak perfect english.

A fantastic (and huge!) castle where Luther once lived for a short time during his exile. But even before Luther's visit this residence was the home of kings and nobelty. One thing that really awed me was the Elisabeth Room (I think) plastered with mosaics from the bottom to the ceiling (sorry no pictures allowed). The walk up to the castle is not something for the weak or old. Luckily there is transferbus driving up and down. Parking is a bit of a nuicance as you're more or less directed to park at the lowest point, then need to walk a good part up... Then again, in the castle you're easily walk around for 2 hours, so that 'little' stroll uphill is just part of the package. Everything is Corona safe (indoors with mask) and you can use an app (luca) to sign-in and sign-out.

Very nice catle with splendid views and interesting history. It's hugely popular, so try coming early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds

Great place, the castle, the views, its history, exhibited subjects ( there was a very interesting exhibition on Martin Luther). We climbed up from Eisenach, steep hill, but a good exercise. Good place to visit.

Beautifully preserved Castle, with stunning views of surrounding area. I would suggest you take your own drinks with you, as prices in the castle are high.
