I have never experienced such an awesome & interesting place in my life. This was my first time seeing a puppet show that too underwater puppet show. The show is in Vietnamese but you will understand everything they are showing via puppets. You can also buy additional audio language packs if you like. I wanted front row seats so I emailed them before & asked them to Book for me. I paid 200,000 VND for 1 front row seat. This place is must for people from all ages & kids would love it. This place has not ♿️ accessible parking but entrance is ♿️ accessible.

Great show incorporating stories of mythical creatures and the rural life of farmers. I got a ticket a few days in advance so I could sit in the middle of the front row which is really worth it as it is quite permissable to take video and photos; therefore no interference with my view. You can get an audio set (50k) available in a variety of languages to provide translation for some of the commentary. However I don't think this is strictly necessary for the enjoyment of the show which is very visual. Each performance lasts 50 mins giving 10 mins for change over between each performance which starts on the hour.

This water puppet show surpassed my expectations with its fantastic music, well-arranged story, and impressive puppet displays. The theater seats were comfortable, and its convenient location right in front of Hoan Kiem Lake added to the overall experience. I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly.

I really enjoyed the 50 minute show. I would recommend sitting either right at the front or right at the back for the best views. We got tickets for the 3pm showing without any trouble. There wasn't a queue to get in but was quite busy once every one was seated. My youngest son and I moved seats to the back when someone tall sat in front of him. We hired 2 of the audio description headsets for 50k each. We could've just shared 1 between the 4 of us and just taken it in turn to listen though. Be warned people have their phones out taking video and photos and will hold them up sometimes blocking your view.

The water puppet show was amazing and unique. This show depicts the story of Vietnam in the form of puppets. The language of this show was in Vietnami which was difficult to understand but the overall experience was very good. The theatre was almost full even in the time of restricted travel but they are taking care of safe distance. The host of this show were very nice

It's worth a try when you're in Hanoi. 50 mins to know more about Vietnamese culture through its traditional live music with 17 short stories. Foreigners don't forget to take along audio translator (free) and flier to figure out what the stories are about. Tickets prices are 100k-150k-200k/person. Kids would love it!!!

Great way to spend an hour in Hanoi out of the heat. We know zero Vietnamese but still enjoyed it. Recognised the sword in the lake folk law bit (spoilers!). Definitely worth the extra cost (200k) to sit up the front. English translation is available but we didn't get that. Currently very restricted show times (3 per week instead of 3 per day) due to covid downturn.

It's a unique place, the small house with a waterpool and a classic oriental palace as a stage, and two platforms where musicians accompany the performance. The musicians are a gem crew themselves, with wonderful local music instruments. The show is comprised of everyday local life scenes that change one another, from planting rice to the Emperor visit. The legend of the Returned Sword on the lake opposite the theater is also played here. All the scenes prove the circle of Life is most important in Orient life. Another point is that this ancient art is carried through centuries and they keep it alive every day till today 365 days a year.

I went there 16:10 in Sunday and the hall was almost full.I reserved the sheet at the ticket office next to the entrance at around 14:00. The show last an hour. Various language translations available. I took one for Japanese, but it didn’t explain the stories in detail. It was more like explaining main idea of each scene , because scene changes often. I rather enjoyed the movements and the music which were played all the way from the start to the end. I love the atmosphere and vibes of the venue and watching this famous puppets show is worth going at least once.

Very interesting place and show. I rented a translator ear peice which I found helpful. The musicians are amazing with the old school instruments they played, truly a dying art. See it live while it still is available. As a Canadian tourist married to a Vietnamese, we both enjoyed it well worth your time and little money.

This show was spectacular! I've been to many performance all over the world and this was the first time I've ever seen a water pupper show. So unique and a cultural treasure! The show is in Vietnamese but I rented a headphone set for 50.000 that translated the general background information of what was happening. The singing and music are beautiful and it's very lively and fun to watch. For only 200.000 (front row seat price) I'm planning on going again! A must do in Hanoi!!

My visit to the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi during February was truly a delightful experience. This traditional art form, unique to Vietnam, left me mesmerized and enchanted. The theater itself is easy to locate and has a cozy and intimate ambiance. As the show began, I was transported into a world of enchantment and wonder. The skillful puppeteers, hidden behind a screen, brought the puppets to life with grace and precision. The performance was a vibrant display of storytelling, accompanied by traditional music and colorful costumes. The puppets glided effortlessly across the water stage, telling tales of Vietnamese folklore and history. The synchronization of the movements and the puppeteers' coordination was simply remarkable. The show was both entertaining and educational, allowing me to gain insight into Vietnam's cultural heritage. From traditional dances to scenes depicting rural life, the performance was a true reflecting of the country's rich traditions. What impressed me most was the humor and interaction between the puppets and the audience. Laughter filled the theater as the puppeteers engaged with the crowd, making the experience truly immersive and enjoyable for everyone. A really unique and unforgettable experience!

The Water Puppet Theatre is indeed a popular attraction, especially among foreign tourists. Located near Sword Lake, it offers a unique cultural experience with its traditional Vietnamese water puppet shows. During my visit, I admired the exterior of the theatre and observed the bustling crowds of tourists, but I did not attend a performance. Nonetheless, its proximity to Sword Lake adds to its charm, making it convenient for tourists to explore other nearby attractions as well. While I cannot comment on the performances themselves, the theatre's reputation and the lively atmosphere suggest that it offers an engaging glimpse into Vietnamese culture through its traditional art form.

This theatre and water puppet show is extraordinary. The set design and puppets are beautiful, the choreography is exceptional and the music is phenomenal. We thoroughly enjoyed the performance and the whole experience. I was skeptical entering the theatre but amazed, smiling and impressed when I left. It deserves the top rating it gets. What delightful fun and unique cultural experience.

This is definitely a MUST stop place if you pass through Lạng Sơn city. It’s surely the best homestay I’ve been during my whole trip in Vietnam; clean, beautiful atmosphere and environment. It’s a brand new homestay and the couple who is running it is doing a wonderful and excellent job. They are absolutely the friendliest persons you would ever find on your way and they would help you as much as they could. I got sick during my stay there and they helped me with everything, from getting medicines to taking care of me. After that along the way up I had an accident, yes I’m not the luckiest traveller ever, and Vanny, one of the owner, helped me at the hospital with translations and everything even if I wasn’t staying there anymore, arranging me the accommodation for the night as well. I can definitely say that here you will find friends. It would be also a good way to get in touch with locals and get used to their habits and traditions. Thanks again, I can’t give you more than 5 stars otherwise I would certainly do it!

Lovely little theatre. Went to see the famous water puppet show here, which was very good for the price - only £14 for 4 of us. The only minor gripes were that the seats were quite cramped, definitely not built for 6ft plus, and the amount of people who came in well after show had started. The show times are well advertised, and you would know this when you buy a ticket. The sight of several folk creeping across the aisles after 20 minutes was highly irritating. There was also a dispute between 2 audience members over a wall mounted fan. One went over to adjust it, the other to set it back again, then the first person went over and switched it off! Not sure who they were, but where I come from, people don't generally interrupt live shows to mess about with cooling devices that don't belong to them. Bad manners. But the theatre is very good, well worth a visit.

My friend’s been wanting to take me here for a long time, and when I got to Hanoi the first thing she did was we walked towards the theatre and we bought tickets for the 630 show it was so good. It was so cute. It was so adorable. I would highly recommend this show for anyone. The puppets and the way they make the movement I mean it’s funny. Yes, it’s sung sort of in Vietnamese language it was but I think if you can look at the motion of the puppets, you can kind of figure out what they’re doing. Definitely go see this this is something you’ll never see anywhere in the world 🌎 unless

What a wonderful show full of Vietnamese culture and beauty. The artists side stage were unreal at singing and playing their instruments and the puppeteers are also so talented. I would highly suggest buying tickets at the office a day or more before or online if you don’t mind paying a little more. They sell out right away.

Must visit!. It was a great show with a lot of efforts put up the artists. Though the play was in Vietnamese, we can get the gist of it. It had multiple shows on a day with ticket prices starting from 100.000 vnd. It was a 50mins play which bagged Asia book of records title for the longest water puppet show. Please book tickets in advance for the timings you prefer or they get sold out when you arrive at the venue.

Great cultural experience right next to the lake. A little bit touristy but it was still a highly enjoyable time. The puppets are all just above the water and the music is all traditional. The dialogue is also in Vietnamese but the context can be ascertained from the actions of the puppets. There is ample seating inside the theatre with the seats towards the front coating a little more, however this is not important as the seating is staggered so that the view is reasonably unimpeded regardless of where you decide to sit. The seating is also all allocated according to your ticket so there is no rush to get to your seats. The restrooms aren't especially clean but are good enough.

Definitely a must do in Hanoi! 100k dong for the cheap seats for this one hour performance. There are also seats for 150k in the middle and 200k in the front. I was in the last row and could see pretty well. I went to the ticket office in the early afternoon (no line) to purchase a ticket for an evening show (packed house). Loved the music and artistry of the puppets. I didn’t purchase an audio guide so I didn’t necessarily follow the story but didn’t feel like I needed to. The only negatives were that a lot of people had their cell phones out taking pictures and recording the show. I wish cell phones were banned. And they let people come into the performance late which was distracting.

Fantastic show. Unexpectedly good traditional music. Preserved tradition. Your money will be worth your while. It’s truly one-of-a-kind experience. Buy the ticket in advance and book the front seats to have a better view. I regret not getting the translator since I really wanted to understand everything that’s happening, including what’s in the songs. I’ll probably be back someday with my friends.

It was a wonderful experience. One gets to experience exquisite puppetry, traditional Vietnamese music, and a soothing atmosphere. We did not realize that one could also get translation in different languages. So we did not follow the narration or songs (they are in Vietnamese) but could only follow what was being shown. To cut waiting times, it is best to book tickets when you visit the sword lake temple and then go to the theatre 15 minutes before show time. You can also but some puppets after the show. Don't miss the souvenir shops around the theatre. All in all, this was the high point of our stay in Hanoi.

Tickets get sold out very fast. Would recommend buying ticket an hour in advance & then visit nearby areas( Hoan Kiem lake and souvenir shops) & then come back to watch the show. Would also recommend to get the audio gadget (50k Dong per device) which will help to understand the backstory better. The songs will not be translated though…. only a backstory will be provided. I got the front seat just 10 mins before the show because no other seat was available. Very entertaining, worth every penny…with live performances of musicians n singers using traditional instruments including tea-cups. The puppeteers come out in the end. Had a great 45 mins there. Good washrooms too.

Truly worth going once for learning more about the Vietnamese culture and tradition. The performers do a great job in keeping the puppet show entertaining and interesting. The performers playing the instruments are amazing and very talented. They have many shows throughout the day and tickets range from 100k to 200k depending on your seats. You can purchase the headsets for translation at an extra cost.

Overall a very good experience but it can be better with some description of the stories in other languages also for the non-Vietnamese travelers. The artists controlling the puppets from behind did a very good job and we loved the performances by the musicians. Get a ticket in advance because seats can fill up fast and the ticket window gets pretty crowded in the evening. Tip: Get a seat in the first three or four rows from the stage for good views of the small puppets!

My girlfriend and I had an interesting experience here. Like all the other reviews say, the staff were very helpful (they gave us a ride to the home stay and helped me find medicine) and hands on - but to an extent where it became very overbearing. The staff constantly wanted to know what our plans were, asking every morning as we were leaving what we were doing and where we were going. They introduced us to their friends who apparently wanted to practice their English and were very assertive in having them spend the day with us. We were open to the idea of hanging out with them, but it had the feeling of being incredibly forced upon us instead of something we were asked if we were interested in. When we told the friend no, he responded with multiple paragraphs explaining that he doesn't want money, etc etc. In general we got very strange vibes from the place (lack of privacy) and moved to the motel down the road after two nights. The facilities were very nice, although the private rooms still had shared bathrooms. Edit: forgot to mention that the place is pricy for the area

This market sits at the center of the city right off the new port that is being built. It’s a very colourful place, filled with interesting stalls and people. The products are numerous but the visuals are exotic to absurd. The fish and meat market are hard on the eyes if you’re an animal lover but you try and look past it; not all cultures treat animals the same, but it’s worth a visit. We met some fisherwomen who took us out to the bay to see the limestone islands up close, that in itself was amazing.

This is a fun place to visit, and somewhere local people recommend too. However, if you don't like puppetry, then even with the addition of water, it's probably not the best place for you. I am not sure of the current opening times, so check first with someone reputable, or if you're nearby just have a walk down in the morning to see what time the evening show is.

This is a very interesting cultural experience I liked the explanations that they give on the history about it Surprisingly it is super inexpensive We sat in row B which was right at the front Great view, although the theater is small I can believe the back row would have been bad The only reason why I’m giving it a 4 star review is because the English audio was impossible to understand. We paid ext as for it and probably would have been better off without it. Purchase your tickets at the booth, we got them a day in advance and the show was packed, so get there early About 5 showings per day

Really fun show. Great AC. Bought my Type 3 100k ticket 30min before and got a great seat in the center. There is a water dispenser and cups available upstairs. There is a very brief introduction to the company in English at the start. They have programs in several languages with titles of the sections. The last section seemed cut short (10seconds long) when I went. My show started at 3 pm and they let people in until 3:15 which was disruptive. The audience took away from this experience. There were loud children (around ages 8-12) with parents who didn't tell them to be quiet, and people holding up their phones taking photos and videos constantly- often using a flash!! Unfortunately, though the show is fun and cool, they are mainly concerned with money since they allow disruptive behavior by letting people go in very late, and take video and use flash photography. I did take pics, but quickly.

Decent experience. Very touristy. The story of Chan, the boy from village acting through multiple acts of bravery to save the village from poor harvest and harmful predator. Story one: Chan with loin cloth planing on the field joined by his friends and family and plantation is completed earlier than expected. Next few stories go there and watch yourself lol. Worth a visit.

Fun experience. The cast is fun and lighthearted. To truly enjoy it, you have to know some basic Vietnamese folklore. It includes the story of the Sword Lake. Make sure to take pictures with the cast prior to the show starting. Splurge a bit more for better seats. It’s worth it!

Great experience! I'm not a puppet fan and I had my doubts, but the music is really nice and the way they play with the puppets in the water is something to watch. Also a great place to cool down for bit. Must see when in Hanoi!

Really enjoyed this. The whole experience was completely different from anything I'd ever seen before. Don't expect to be blown away by effects or anything, but it was a great glimpse into a different culture and different era. The musicians and sound effects were a lot of fun. They have audio translations you can buy but I think it would have been distracting and other reviewers said the translation wasn't great. I'd say go without it because the storyline is not particularly important or difficult to grasp. The theater is small and has no bad seats. We paid for center, middle price and it was good, but I can't imagine it being very different from the back. It did fill up on a weekday at 5p, so arrive an hour or so early at least to get a seat.

Fantastic stuff. Kids particularly will like this. It's a 50-minute show with 17 different aspects of Vietnamese culture being depicted (not exactly short stories as other reviewers have mentioned) - fishing, frog-catching, the unicorn dance, the sacred animals dance, two phoenixes dancing (it was very funny when an egg appeared after their 'dance' and then a baby phoenix 😂😂), boat races, two farmers protecting their ducks from a fox, two unicorns playing with a ball, dragons breathing fire, etc. The stage is filled with water and the puppets seem to be controlled from behind the green screen in the pic. It's incredible how much control the puppeteers seem to have over even the limbs of the puppets, because unlike in other forms of puppetry there were no visible ways in which the puppets were being controlled. Also don't let what's happening on stage distract you from the musicians to either side, who are using a lot of different instruments to produce the lovely music. Some basics: - When we went on 30th September, only three shows were available - 17:20, 18:30 and 20:00. - Tickets are 200k, 150k or 100k depending on the row you want. We picked the middle one, but were unfortunate enough to have two tall men in front of us (sincere request to tall people - please slouch a bit so those behind can see, as the puppets are on the floor and not very visible) - We bought tickets early, but there were several 200k seats empty in front of us - They provide cushions for kids so that the kids have enough height to see - Audio guide available in multiple languages at 50k per piece. Ours had an extra audio jack, so if you have a pair of wired headpieces, you can share. But the audio guide just provides context at the beginning of each segment, not the entire translation. We bought one per person which was a bit of a waste.

The puppet show was a very interesting experience, definitely worth to watch when you come to hanoi. Though it was in Vietnamese, an English brochure outlining the titles of each story was given, and you can purchase an audio guide which gives a good summary and/or background of each story. We shared the audio guide among 3 people and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Each story was accompanied by traditional water puppet music played by live musicians and some singers. Seats were separated into 3 sections (nearest - 200 000, middle - 150 000, farthest - 100 000), but our middle seats had a considerably good view already.

The show was great. Its nice to see the beautiful show. Full of great culture 🙏 The seat could be better as from my view the whole show I only see people head. If some couple in front of me talking or move their heads, I cant see at all. I’m in the sea of phones. Which is most of time i see the show through someone phone because some of them like raise their arms up and block my whole visions. Which I also have to be careful that I’m gonna blocked someone from behind as well. Also someone getting in the seat in the middle of the whole 🙄

Wasn't sure what to expect, but I honestly loved this! It was about 50 minutes, I would recommend picking up a leaflet in your language so you know the title of each scene. I didn't bother with a translation audio guide. You don't need to know what's going on. Just sit, listen to the music, and watch the puppets. Each scene is short, and then it switches, so you're not having to follow a storyline particularly. I would definitely recommend this fun performance!

The Puppet Show was a great insight into the Vietnamese culture. It was chorused in Vietnamese language and hypnotising music that was just beautiful. Would highly recommend seeing this. I think it was just long enough to get a real thorough overview of their ways of life and their beliefs.

Recommended to go early to buy tickets for a later show - weekend shows can go rather quickly and it seems that it’s almost always a full house! Even though I didn’t get the audio guide (it wasn’t really pushed and I learned about it too late!) the show was fantastic. Music and performance was fascinating!!! A must-visit in Hanoi. Irritated by some of the audience though- I wished someone would stop them from talking loudly and holding up their phones throughout the show to take photos/videos. It was blocking my view more than half the time!

We bought last-minute tickets in the cheapest section (the rear third) and it was well worth it. The theatre isn't huge, and the elevation of the seats means you probably won't miss anything. Cheap as far as tourist attractions go.

I recently had the pleasure of watching the Thang Long water puppet show and I have to say it was a truly mesmerizing experience. The show was a perfect blend of traditional Vietnamese culture and modern-day entertainment. The puppets were intricately crafted and the performers did a fantastic job of bringing the puppets to life. The music and lighting added to the ambiance of the show and made it an immersive experience. Overall, I highly recommend the Tang Long water puppet show to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable cultural experience. It is definitely worth the time and money and I would love to watch it again.

Worth visiting even if you only have 1 day in Hanoi, the ticket has 3 grades, grade A, B, and C (200k, 150k, 100k) we bought grade A to sit closer but the person in front of me was taller so they blocked my view 😮‍💨 anyway. So I don't recommend spending more money, just buy the 100k ticket. Don't buy tickets online unless you can't get to the theater until the last minute. The translation device is 50k, not worth it, just read the name of each performance you will understand (17 different stories shown in 50 minutes)

It was a good little show and quite funny. I recommend booking well in advance. Don't waste your time with the audio device to listen in your language, it only gives a couple of brief bits of information about the show.

Wow! What a wonderful experience. We bought tickets not sure what to expect but we were fascinated by what we saw. The show is about an hour long and divided into different acts. We really enjoyed the traditional Vietnamese music and it does include a narrator in Vietnamese and we said no to the English narrator headsets as you can get the general gist of the plot lines. The puppetry was amazing and really fascinating to watch. I would recommend a visit if you’re in town!

A very unique and charming puppet show that must be experienced by anyone that comes to Vietnam. Yes, it is touristy but it really is something that most people will enjoy. The whole show runs for around an hour and at 200k a ticket (for the "expensive" seats), it's well worth the price of admission.

The show is for 50min aprox. The time files when you are here. The folks who perform an an absolute bliss. The artists in the front with the music and singing and the artists behind the screen who controls the puppets are really skilled. The story is the local Vietnamese language. However, you can obtain the translation devise at 50.000VND per person. The seating arrangements are super visible and the price is different for each section. Its better to directly book at the venue as the price is less compared online. Since the shows are mostly booked i recommend to book the tickets the day you land in Hanoi. Overall a complete entertainer. Thank you, Thang Long Water Puppet Team. You Rock !!!

Brilliant. Definitely get the audio - description for all of 30,000dong. Some great little twists throughout. And amazing music. Nice way to spend an hour. Feels like you're experiencing a little bit of true Vietnam in the changing Hanoi.

Highly recommended part of any visit to Hanoi! It is such a unique experience of Vietnamese culture and a window to people's mind and everyday life. There are audio guides available at the counter to hear explanations and translations of the songs, but we didn't get one. I think it would have been distracting from the whole musical experience, and anyway the stories were simple and understandable.

Interesting to see and feel the Vietnamese (Hanoi) culture through this show. It's colorful and with a very talented live band. Too bad we weren't able to understand the show since it was all in Vietnamese. I think there were some funny bits since some people who understood the words were laughing. Got a bit sleepy in the middle of the show which runs for about an hour. Price is OK for VND 150000 in area 2. Had a hard time seeing the stage. I'm not sure if this is due to the placement of chairs (or we were in area 2). Had a small misunderstanding with cashier for the time. If it had an English version, which I know is asking too much, I would give 5 stars.

The world-famous Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi has its roots in an art form that dates back to the 11th century. The tradition of water puppet theatre stems from a time when rice paddy fields were flooded and villagers would make entertainment by standing in the waist-deep water with the puppets performing over the water. Using large rods to support the puppets it appeared as if they were moving across the water with the puppeteers hidden behind a screen.

It's around 60min long play setup traditional Vietnamese year around activities. The puppet show and the technicality that goes behind it is breathtaking.. simply amazing.. the whole crew.. music players.. the actors.. puppet controllers.. story teller.. though it's in Vietnamese .. one wouldn't have any roblem in understanding the sentiments of the whole thing.. exquisite.

This water puppet theater is a unique experience that anyone should definitely try to experience. The show is accompanied with traditioanl music, and although the show is entirely in Vietnamese you can get audio guides in multiple languages. However, the audio guide is more a collection o short explanations about the show as it progresses, than a simultaneous translation of the acts. No need to buy tickets online. Better go there and buy them at the counter. The general admission fee is 100,000 VD. The show consists of 17 short sketches that last for an hour. Highly recommend!

An exceptional show. All puppet masters stay in the water. They both direct the puppets and speak for them. The water in the basin is not quite warm. The puppet masters have to endure cold. But they seem to love their job. The performance normally involves several shorter plays. Some of these are comedies understandable for all people.

One of a kind show! A must visit in Hanoi... Its was an authentic Vietnamese show. The artists' expertise and their hard work over the art can clearly be seen. It's a must visit for art and culture lover traveller. The music was very fantastic. Date of experience: September 2018

I really loved this. The show was magical. Puppets performed in a small indoor lagoon and were accompanied by live musicians. Unique experience to see a traditional Vietnamese show. The show lasts for around an hour. The venue is located close to the Lake of Restored Sword. Recommend if you have time.

The beautiful voice of the traditional singers telling the story is really soothing to the ears. Although, it was all in Vietnamese language, but I really like the water puppet show. Make sure you come early to get the best seats. I sat in the middle, two rows from the front. Cannot comment on the tickets, as we were here with the ASEAN delegates. Glad that they included this in the itinerary.

What a wonderful experience! I'd highly recommend it, and children would love it too. I booked our 'skip the queue' tickets, front row, the day before on my mobile and collected from a booking office half hour before. The address is all in the confirmation email.. Very straight forward with Google maps. Tickets were VND200,000 each. We didn't bother with the audio as I'd read other reviews saying it distracted from the performance and you get the gist. Gets a thumbs up from us!

The show base on are Vietnamese folk tales. Although there is an English title for each story, all the dialogue during the puppet show is in Vietnamese, without translation. So, if you want to know about the story, you need to learn Vietnamese before. If not, just enjoy the show it self.

  • 4/5 Meagan C. 1 year ago on Google
Interesting and sweet but 50 minutes is really all you need. Please arrive early - people were still arriving ten minutes into the show and, as the rows are narrow, seated audience members were having to get out of the row to let the latecomers through. It was very distracting. Perhaps theatre staff could stop people entering after the show has started? If people we warned of this at the time they bought the tickets, then it could be enforced when people arrive late.

Great performance! Wondering how they do it. I don't know what they are telling about (they use vietnamese, and I don't understand at all), but the audiences can catch the meaning of the whole show by just watching and enjoying it until the end. Recommended.

Probably one of the most unique puppet shows I've ever watched that takes place on a water stage and it's also accompanied by musicians playing beautiful traditional music. This traditional puppet show dates back to the 11th century where farmers would perform on flooded rice paddies with puppets attached to fishing rods for entertainment. I thoroughly enjoyed it and purchased an English audio guide to get a better understanding about what I was watching. The show depicts scenes of activities in the villages like fishing, harvesting rice and 🐉🐉🐉 boat racing. There's even depictions of mythical animals like dragons and phoenixs. It's a unique puppet show that you should definitely watch if you're in Hanoi. Enjoy!

ONE OF MY FAVOURITE EXPERIENCES IN HANOI! amazing! I highly recommend paying the extra for audio translation if you cant understand Vietnamese. • 5/5 Yang C. 1 year ago on Google
It was a fantastic cultural experience. Several short folk stories were told through water puppetry, mixed with the playing of beautiful music using traditional musical instruments and singing the vocals. Highly recommend to visit this place if you drop by Hanoi.

Very unique experience of watching the water puppets Tickets get sold quickly, especially on the weekends. Best to pick a show timing and book in advance. The shows are about 50 mins long, comprised of about 20 short stories. They're all in Vietnamese but easy enough to understand. You could consider the audio guide if you wanted more info. Tickets cost 200k, 150k, or 100k depending on how close to the stage you are.

It was good show of 50 min about Vietnamese culture n the way old people used to live ..puppets movement under water is very fascinating..but since all show is in local language very difficult for us to understand.. it's right on bank's of very beautiful lake.. During night outside road becomes like big party place for local people n tourists... There is dance on street, music, games for kids n much more..

Lovely show. There’s three levels of tickets with level one being close to the stage and level three being in the back. My friends and I did level three and enjoyed the show just fine. Cool, air conditioned & fanned room. Buy tickets in advanced because they do sell out.

  • 2/5 Pedro J. 9 months ago on Google
The show is kinda okay but a bit pricey for what it is. It is fully in vietnamese, so they will try to sell you an audio guide that's supposed to work automatically and it also pricey. The problem is the audio guide barely works and it does not provide almost any usefull information. Do it if you have some spare time but don't expect anything lifechanging.

  • 4/5 やすみたび 11 months ago on Google
Traditional water theater performances 365 days a year Skillfully manipulate puppets on the water. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand the language. In May 2023, there were performances at 16,17,18. Performance time is 1 hour. Many people are taking pictures with their smartphones, so if you want to enjoy watching without stress, we recommend that you reserve a seat in the front.

  • 3/5 Asif K. 10 months ago on Google
The music and ambience will give you an understanding about traditional Vietnamese culture. The visuals are great and the performance is nothing like you've seen in any puppet show. The show is in Vietnamese but you can still understand what you'll be seeing there. They also have an audio device which briefs you about the show in your own preferred language.

  • 5/5 Kang Zi J. 9 months ago on Google
Great show in the heart of the tourist area (Ho Hoan Kiem). By the end of the show, I was still trying to figure out how the puppets work. It’s been months and I still have no idea. I recommend getting the English audio guide to understand the folk stories being played out. Many shows a day, and the schedule is by the counter.

  • 5/5 Alyne R. 9 months ago on Google
Worth the visit! It is definitely for tourists but to be honest I really enjoyed it! All those different instruments played! The music was beautiful!!! I also liked the whole concept behind the water puppets (created during flooding time for entertainment). The puppets are quite fun! The only down side is that we could not understand anything as it was in the local language. I think they might have some headset with translation but we didn't buy it. Saying that the program was simple and easy to understand. Overall great experience!

  • 5/5 Jordan W. 9 months ago on Google
Buy tickets the day before. 200k for front row. 50k for the audio guide to know what’s going on. Super unique show with local artists singing and playing instruments. The show it’s self is amazing. The building is nice and cool with strong high powered fans. 50 minute run time. Very nice way to spend an hour out of the heat!

  • 5/5 Gogo N. 9 months ago on Google
Very beautiful and emotional, the instrument players and the singers are very talented, they make the experience great, as well as the puppeteers. A must do in Hanoi, but don't forget to get your tickets early, you can't go there at 6 pm and expect to have a ticket.

  • 5/5 Meda W. 9 months ago on Google
This was lovely. Bought the vip tickets on klook so we were like 2nd or 3rd row. My 14 yo was even entertained. Fun local/cultural activity that's fairly cheap (maybe 11USD per ticket) Don't worry about getting there too early if you buy your tickets online as they empty out one group then immediately let yours in maybe 10 mins before start. We didn't get the earphones that would have translated into English so we didn't know what the plot but it was still something e joyanle to watch. Lasted maybe an hour. The only downside to ordering tickets off klook, and this is probably unconnected to the show, is the tickets have to be picked up in a different location. Thankfully the location wasn't far from our hotel but it wasn't near the show. I assumed, probably fine print would have told me otherwise, but I thought they would be at will call at the location. We went to the evening performance and when we came out tge roads were blacked off for a night market. The red bridge is really close and cool looking at night. Some of the singers from the show were outside later singing. Highly recommend.

  • 4/5 Marisa D. 8 months ago on Google
The orchestra is very talented. I didn't take the audio guide so that I could focus on the music more. I really enjoyed the show and it didn't bother me that it was all in Vietnamese. I didn't have a good experience with buying the tickets. I had booked my seats more than 1 week in advance and got confirmation via email. The sender told me there was no way to book my exact seats, only the set of rows in which they would place me. On the day, I showed up 45 minutes in advance (they had recommended to show up 30 min in advance) and there was already a long queue. It didn't matter whether you had booked your seats or not and I could see that some seats were reserved although I had been told that it was not possible. The lady at the ticket booth was very cold, she was ignoring me for a while and she was slow for no reason. She couldn't find my booking and was in a bad mood. She ended up giving me someone else's seats (I saw because she stroke someone else's name). I am sorry for that person. I hope they will improve the ticket system.

Attending the Water Puppet Show in Hanoi was an absolute delight. The performance, though entirely in Vietnamese, managed to transcend language barriers and captivate the audience with its exquisite blend of traditional artistry and skillful puppetry. The incorporation of dragons, fish, and enchanting songs added a layer of authenticity that immersed me in the heart of Vietnamese culture. For those planning to attend, it's crucial to arrange an e-translator in advance. While the language barrier might seem daunting, the show's visual spectacle, combined with its evocative music and singing, creates an experience that transcends words. The puppets' graceful movements on water, adorned with vibrant hues, were truly a sight to behold. The Water Puppet Show is a cultural gem that offers a window into Vietnam's rich heritage. It's a testament to the nation's artistic traditions and a must-see for anyone seeking a unique and immersive cultural experience in Hanoi. Things to note: • The fee starts from dong 100000 (back seats), 150000(middle seats), 200000(front seats) • translator is 50000 extra • no water bottles provided • show can be avoided if you have to go somewhere else • show is of 50 minutes • book early else the show is almost always booked everyday (no matter if it is weekday or weekend)

One of the highlights when we visited Vietnam. The performers behind the puppets are really talented and really did a great performance! We got tickets from Klook but I reckon it is better if you go direcyly to the theatre to get tickets to save money. Must see and experience in Hanoi 🇻🇳

  • 5/5 Lauren J. 8 months ago on Google
Seats cost between 100k VND- 200k plus 50k for audio guide. They offer extra cushion for children so they can sit a little higher in the chair. I highly recommend the audio guide because they give cultural context to each scene. It only lasts about an hour and there are multiple shows each day. Because water puppetry is historically important to Vietnam, it's pretty interesting and unique. Cute family friendly activity and a nice break from being outside.

  • 5/5 Giang L. 7 months ago on Google
I booked the tickets in advance via phone with the seats super close to the stage and the price for 1 ticket was VND 200,000. When I was there the theater was full, people were in line waiting to get inside. If you're with your family with kids, it is an interesting thing to do and I'm sure the kids like that a lot. My family decided that they didn't need an audio guide since I could tell them most of the things. The artists did a very hard work when half of their bodies were under water for about an hour each show and I really admired them for that. Outside you can buy souvenirs which I thought might be good gifts for your friends and family. When the show ended, I walked outside and it was a really beautiful sunset at the lake area and it was beautiful. You can visit the temple nearby easily from the theater.

English audio is not a translation but a very brief description. Also the music was out of rhytm and the singers couldn’t sing really well, were out of rhytm and of tune. Interesting to check but you don’t really learn much about the Vietnamese culture. Be sure to bring a jacket or some clothes because they blast the AC.

My first experience of a water puppet show. It was amazing. A 50 min show with stories of culture and village life including traditional live music. It was worth a visit for one time. You get headphones in your preferred language as the show is in Vietnamese.

  • 5/5 Hui M. 7 months ago on Google
1st class seats, for front 3 rows, gets you the best views. Recommended to get an audio guide (chargeable) in your local language (if available) so that you can understand the storyline. Show was 50 minutes and was entertaining throughout. You can see the band using interesting items (such as teacups) to make music. The puppets are cute, and you get to see the puppeteers at the end.

Once in a lifetime experience to watch this traditional show in the heart of Hanoi! Locals used to go to this show to just relax with family and have a good laugh after a long day of work. Approach this show with that mindset, and you will enjoy it even if you don't understand the words. I didn't bother with audio guide definitely not needed. You can use common sense to understand the stories. They are about life of locals in rural area and legends. We go the backrow seats (100k dong). The entire theater is not even that big so front or last row doesn't make that much difference. We were on the last row and had perfect visibility to the puppets and performers on side stages. We arrived a few minutes after the show start time and they still allowed us entry. I recommend to squeeze this into your day. :)

  • 5/5 Sam M. 6 months ago on Google
Definitely something different to experience in Hanoi. The live music that accompanies the show is wonderful, such different instruments and sounds. I sat in the cheaper section near the back and the view was great. Doors opened around 15 minutes before the start. There is a toilet if you need it.

  • 4/5 Bill L. 6 months ago on Google
Strange experience. Great to experience another aspect of a different society to ours. A glimpse into traditional village perspectives on life. The music is not like ours, but has real charm. There is a little leaflet in various languages that has brief descriptions of each scene. Essential to grab this. Getting out through just one doorway meant it took a long time to get out of the theatre.

Fun and unique show, with water puppets in Hanoi’s old quarter. No need to buy the audio guides and no need to understand Vietnamese to get the short sketches. Overall great hour spent! Tickets should be bought in advanced, but it was somewhat disappointing to see many good spots still free, after I had been told the only free seat was in one of the last rows.

Visiting the water puppet theater in Hanoi with musicians left an incredible impression. The amazing blend of musicians' skill and technical prowess creates a captivating performance. Cool experience, wasn't really sure what was going on. The live performance was nice, puppets a were ok - they started off strong with some fire breathing dragons but after the first 5 minutes the rest of the show were very simple people, ducks, boats, etc. Everyone is a tourist, no locals go here.

Such a fun experience! Definitely get in early to buy tickets in advance and pay the extra for seats in the front rows. And if you don’t speak Vietnamese, get the audio guide to help you understand the show. Didn’t quite know what to expect- thought it might all be a bit touristy and a bit naff- but really enjoyed the show.
