(Translated by Google) A World Heritage Site with a long history The Thang Long ruins themselves were built around 1100-1500, and you can feel a very long history. At the far end from the entrance, there are buildings and basements that were used during the Vietnam War, and you can feel the history of an era completely different from the ruins. The ruins are also interesting, but personally, I recommend the basement where the Operations Staff Room during the Vietnam War is located. It is built quite deep underground, and the unique coldness, darkness, and smell make you imagine the tense appearance of the time. It's a very large place, so it's recommended to spend half a day sightseeing. The admission fee is 30,000 dong, which is quite cheap. If you find this post helpful, please like it.

Beautiful Unesco world heritage site. Did not know they had hidden bunkers here used during Vietnam war. A much larger place than I originally thought. Can spend a few hours here.

We had a wonderful time exploring this place. There's a huge facade which fronts the citadel. Initially we thought that that was it and was a bit disappointed. But we walked further in and found many little buildings which contain artifacts excavated from before. The doors to these displays were opaque and it was not obvious that there're things to see inside. I'm glad we spent more time to discover these. Perhaps better signage should be put up to direct visitors.

What a disappointment. It's just crowded with people here to take pictures, like hundreds of them, it's actually ruining the entire place. Such a shame because it's beautiful and it's got some history to tell, but it's just so annoying to constantly stop because people are taking pictures, and not to be able to take pictures yourself of the buildings because these people are taking all the good spots.

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi is a historical gem that impeccably preserves the legacy of Vietnam. The well-kept buildings within the citadel are a testament to the dedication in preserving the nation's heritage. The meticulous maintenance adds to the grandeur, allowing visitors to step back in time and appreciate the architectural marvels. The informative displays provide a comprehensive journey through the rich history of the citadel, offering valuable insights into Vietnam's cultural tapestry. What sets this experience apart is the captivating decor during the New Year celebrations. The infusion of festive elements adds a special touch, enhancing the overall visit with a sense of celebration and cultural richness. For those seeking a blend of history and a festive atmosphere, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long stands as a captivating destination in Hanoi. Tickets can be purchased from the front counter easily.

Nothing much to see, paid for entrance ticket and the only photo spot was at the building wall. There was a glass covered area where the archeological preserved were kept behind the wall. Not worth the entrance. Saw a few Vietnamese lady changing the traditional outfit taking photos with the wall as background. You can try that if you want.

Great experience if you're looking for nature, a historical site, a museum, and a park. 30k to enter. I recommend bringing an umbrella or sunblock. There are areas where there is no shade and it will get hot. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here. Don't forget to check out the underground bomb shelter and the museums inside the buildings, they're easy to miss. Great place to take kids. Some drinks and snacks are available to purchase inside.

For 70,000 VND??? This is a waste of money. The only “real” preserved building of the imperial palace is the South Gate, everything else is an exhibit. Half of the place is under construction. It took me less than 30 minutes to walk the whole premises. I usually love museums and historic sites, this isn’t it. I wish I could ask for a refund.

Interesting historical place. Unfortunately, not everything is spared by time. It's still worth visiting. We were lucky to experience a local festival due to coming to the Lunar New Year.

Went there probably outside the touristy season, so a lot of renovations were happening. Definitely a place to stop by, some particular architecture and a sense of grandeur. We recommend not going if the sun is out and it’s 34°C outside: there are few “cool” zones where you can rest and the entire citadel can take up to 2 hours to walk around. Bring some water!

The culture and architecture is incredible, but the layout and exhibition design falls flat. Like why add weird plastic trees around? Or low cost replicas? Or low grade images printed so large its pixelized? Also, hard to walk around freely with the amount of photoshoots going on, be prepared.. However, just to read the beautiful descriptions of the artifacts, the structure itself and the walk around its worth the visit. Entry is cheap compared to western UNESCO sites

This is just one of those places you really must go when you are in Hue. Best tip is to be there first thing in the morning when they open. Otherwise it can be extremely hot, most any time of the year. Get the headset as it makes everything easier to understand. They do not have lots of descriptive plaques. Also the headsets help guide you around the vast property. Otherwise it can be quite overwhelming. My photos do not show anything inside. I live in the area and have been here many times.

Interesting place to learn about Vietnam's history. However, not much to see. Lots of ceramic and pottery. Also, there are too many construction equipment and items left around the place. Gardening hoses, tables and chairs are left around the place. It spoils the atmosphere. Air conditioners are also turned off in some enclosed exhibit room which makes it very warm and stuffy. Keep the receipt after purchasing the ticket as you will need it to enter another section across the road. You'll be required to pay the entrance fee again if you lose the receipt. It is quite stupid that they gave you a one-time-use card to enter the first gantry, yet there are two sections and two gantry to pass through.

This UNESCO site was incredibly educational offering Vietnamese and English translations. I now have a better understanding of VN history. For 30k it is a true bargain. Foreign visitors make sure before you leave cross the street and check out the archeological sites.

By far the best value for money on our trip to Hanoi this far. The entry fee of VND 30k per adult, kids free, included entrance into all of the exhibit halls, which were spectacular, beautifully presented and incredibly informative, with English translations of everything. We spent at least 3 hours here, enjoying the beautiful buildings, the exquisitely presented artifacts and a few war-story surprises at the end. The gardens and surroundings were immaculate and clean and the toilets were clean and free to use...rare around here. Hardly any people roaming around here. 10/10

The tickets are extremely reasonably but the experience is outstanding. Despite being destroyed most parts on the ground, the remnants are of great historic value. Also the artefacts excavated from underground are very diverse and reflect the rich heritage of culture, architecture and religion throughout different dynasties of feudal Vietnam. There are 5 exhibitions focusing on different topics, all of which are worth seeing (with great care and attention). The landscape is beautiful and peaceful with many green trees and colourful flowers and wildlife (birds). Next time I will bring homemade food and have some little picnic here.

You can skip the trishaw, nothing great or particularly exciting about that activity. It's a great way to spend many hours wandering from one area to another. If the weather is cooperative, then the experience is many times enhanced. The history is enlightening, and the many stories will keep you entertained if you have a good guide. All in all, definitely one of the plus points in visiting Vietnam and this particular region of the country.

(Translated by Google) This is also one of the famous attractions in Halong Bay. The patio cave is also called Moon Lake. Due to the problem of sea tide, you must enter the cave to enjoy the lake view at low tide. ㄧ When entering the cave, the tour guide gave us a cookie, because many monkeys living on the shore lived there. The biscuit was used to feed the monkeys. In addition to swimming in the lake, there was also an itinerary that could interact with local animals. I think Quite interesting! This trip to the lake is not long, but you can see the beautiful scenery in the lake. In the middle, it is surrounded by stones, so it is called a patio cave. From time to time, the clever bird calls it even more quietly, as if in the poems of ancient people. In order to enjoy such beautiful scenery! It is recommended that if you come to Halong Bay, you can experience this trip at your own expense, which is pretty good!

It is a beautiful citadel located in the heart of Hanoi. You can spend an hour n half here easily. There are many sections to see here, including a bunker from the Vietnam War era. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking. Pick up a map from the ticket counter so you don't miss any places to visit inside, as it can be confusing. The entrance ticket is 30,000 VND. Totally worth a visit??

I went here before the pandemic - After taking some photos of the Presidential Palace, you can either walk or ride a Grab car or scooter to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long functioned as a royal court during 1800s and became a complex of imperial palaces. It became a prison chamber of French soldiers during World War 2 and was severely impacted by war. Today, it's listed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. At the entrance of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, there's a mini-exhibit showcasing the history, culture, and traditions of Vietnam and its citizen. You can also visit other attractions such as Hanoi Flagtower and Vietnam Military History Museum to know more about the Vietnamese history and war vehicles used during the world war.

Being the ex-imperial city if Vietnam, it is definitely a place to visit for Vietnam-goers. However, much work should have been done to maintain the vast gardens, which have been strewn with weeds. Having said that, the citadel vast compound provides you with the space to take a walk and enjoy the tranquility; much scope for provocative thinking when it comes to the history of Vietnam. It also offers many corners for you to take a photo or two. You cannot say you have been to Hue without visiting the citadel.

Wonderful place to visit and totally worth visiting. You will see many cross cultural architectures, antiquities, monuments, and educational exhibitions. You will be amazed by how the castles are built with underground and steep stairs. The exhibitions are fascinating as the antiquities are restored and displayed around different exhibition halls. Some of the exhibition halls are air-conditioned, you can be cooled down a bit during the hot weather. Entrance fee: 30,000 VND for adult Time spent: 2 hours

Entrance fee 30,000 vnd The total area of relics is huge. It took me around 2 hours to walk around. I didn’t pay close attention to the exhibits because there were too many exhibition halls. There are many detailed information about the three dynasties of regimes that once rules Vietnam. There is also one building dedicated to telling the stories when Vietnam was having wars with the US. After visiting the main park, you can cross the street to the other side of the relics. There is a site of anthropologists excavating the old relics. Overall, the park is not stunning. Even though it feels like any basic temples or religious parks in Taiwan or China, it’s still worth a visit to know more about the history of Vietnam.

Worth a visit if you have extra time but not my favourite for a short stay. Entrance fee is 30.000 Dong (1.3 USD) per person. Make sure you enter through the South gate as North gate sells the ticket but they push you outside as it is under construction in the middle. Only air-conditioned in some exhibitions. There are a few toilets but they are all in a sad condition. The citadel could be much more attractive then what it is today. I think in time it will get better hopefully.

Like many of the historical sites we visited in Hanoi, this place was somewhat interesting but a little barren in terms of things to see and actual information / context. You can see the whole thing in about 15-20 minutes, and it’s honestly not super interesting or beautiful. Worth a quick stop especially if you’re seeing the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum / museum nearby, but don’t expect to be blown away. EDIT: After reading other reviews I realize we missed virtually all the actual exhibitions here and just saw the main palace building. TBH I don’t blame us, the road to the other exhibitions seemed to be under construction and there wasn’t any map or signage indicating that there was anything at all to see that way.

Beautiful surroundings to wander through and the exhibits are as interesting as they are stunning. While there is the ubiquitous reference to the war, there is more of the ancient history of Vietnam, which is rich and interesting. The gardens were a welcome respite in the middle of a busy city and so beautiful. Highly recommend.

Very beautiful and interesting relics, comprise alot of ancient artifacts and could tell you alot about vietnamese history, the relics is spacious and most are outdoor space so if you going in summer, it's better to bring hat, umbrella and water with you. There are services to hire traditional vietnamese clothing if you want some cute pictures, before you come in, grab a guide map to help navigate around the area to not miss any location. Would recommend visiting this and the presidential palace together. It's a good place to know about the US Vietnam War and how the things operated and how Vietnamese got the freedom. They also have preserved bunker downstairs which was used to protect from bombing and that is the most spectacular thing according to me for this place. It is also peaceful and quiet to catch a break with a garden inside.

A top place during my visit to Hanoi. It's so well maintained, offers so much info about history of Vietnam. It took me around 2-3 hours to complete the place. Next to the ticket office there's a beautiful traditional vietnamese mural (see my picture). There's also gardens, old buildings, a nice viewpoint too. For me is a Top 3 place to visit in Hanoi.

There's two boat to choose where kayak and bamboo. I will prefer kayak as it's very fun and you can choose to go anywhere . Bamboo boat is bring by the expert and just bring u around and done. Kayak u can choose to stop down and take pictured and make sure don't drop your phone inside

  • 4/5 Daryl L. 5 years ago on Google
Nothing special this this area. There are 2 options one for the kayak and the other for the bamboo boat where some local will row for you. The kayak is much better as you have the freedom to go anywhere. It won't topple easily as well but you can't be too careful. Personally I feel it's not very amazing. It's just a rock and you go under a cave for a few seconds. This place also filled with many China tourist on day trips.

Here the cliff stands up, four seasons the water is clear and blue as a mirror. Near the water's edge, a bow-shaped gate opens at the foot of the island, which is Luon cave. Tourists go kayaking to visit Luon Cave Through the beautiful city gate, we meet a round, flat lake with overgrown trees, rocky cliffs, on which monkeys run and leap, the old silhouettes are shiny, the wind rolls. Orchids let loose and bloom fragrantly and under the calm blue water is the vibrant life of marine creatures such as shrimp, fish, crabs, squid ... This is a group of closed islands, connecting to the sea with just one Cave mouth is about 4 m wide, 3 m high, 100 m long. The brackish lake in the cave is surrounded by four mountains, about 1 km2 wide. On the cliffs, there are still fossil freshwater snail shells, proving that here people have lived and that day must be a deep valley. There are not many caves of this type in Ha Long Bay, but perhaps the most attractive thing that attracts visitors here is the natural scenery. Good place to visit for tourists. Not much information and a fair amount of artifacts. Mostly just pottery and ceramics. Also shows the time it was used during Vietnam war. Come morning at 9am is a good time

The ancient citadel of thang long which translates to the rising dragon. Similar to the Forbidden City in China, this imperial city was built around 1011 as a place for several dynasties to live and rule over the area. The citadel also act as a sort fortress for incoming invasions. You can't miss this !

Beautiful place to visit when you're in Hanoi. They did a great job maintaining the area. Clean and plenty of beautiful flowers planted. Recommended for a quick visit when you're in town. There are ticket charge upon entering.

Fascinating site at the heart of Hanoi. Lots of exhibitions for History lovers to sink their teeth into. Would recommend it if you have the time in Hanoi. Don't rush it like I did!

Could have been better with more maps and signage, but if you're keen on navigating through the entire area it's a beautiful site! A glimpse into Vietnam's history apart from all the war and french era aces

A chance to see more history and culture in the next of Hanoi. Cheap to get in (I think it was 30,000 VND per person). Lots to walk around and see here. It was very quiet when we went (July 2022). You can easily spend a lot of time reading about all the history and culture. Worth a visit.

Such an interesting place, with so much history and interesting facts about Hanoi and how it got to be the city we see today.

This was a great place to visit! The area was beautiful and there were multiple rooms you could go into that provided information about Hanoi and the citadels history! The information was all also written in English so it was really interesting and only cost a few pounds to enter and go round it all!

As a one of UNESCO world heritage sites, this place have a lot story and ancient relic that keep here. The museum it self is pretty big, there is some building with different theme. Don't forget to take a picture in front the gates and visit the underground bungker too. Like a common museum there are goods or maybe some replica with explanation. No guide around. I don't know the ambience here fell a bit bored...

Despite almost nothing remaining I would recommend a visit if time allows. A The domain entails more than the entry gate and gardens (which by the way are beautifully restored and maintained) and one French army barrack. Various small exhibitions are showing artifacts found during the archaeological excavations. Every exhibition is centered around a certain theme which makes it great to pick and choose to see what you are interested in. For the war tourists, you can also visit the bunker from where the North Vietnamese military organised the defense of Hanoi during the Vietnam war. It's finished with original furniture and equipment. Normally I wouldn't spend money on this but it's part of your entry ticket for the city so it's a nice little extra. Not the best thing to see in Hanoi, but if you have extra time, go and have a look. Entry: 30K

I really enjoyed the Imperial Citadel - it’s quite a comprehensive site and offers restored buildings, a view of archaeological sites and a museum. It was hot during the day of my visit which wasn’t a problem because there’s a number of vendors selling drinks and ice creams as well as places to sit under the shade

The Imperial Citadel was a recommended place by tour guides and reviews online. I must admit, I was a bit let down with what the place has to offer. There is not a lot of information around the architecture nor history of the place. Though the structure in itself has historical significance over the ages starting from the French to the Vietnamese, I would have liked to have a guided tour to learn more about it. It does seem like a local favourite as the gardens are quite huge and well maintained. Lots of local brides coming in for photoshoot. If you are a tourist and have limited time, I would recommend skipping.

I spent about an hour or longer walking around this interesting world heritage site. It is very big and plenty to see. 30000 to enter and the war bunker was the most interesting to see.

  • 5/5 Thaveesha C. 1 year ago on Google
This is a structure of historical significance with museums, exhibit halls, bunkers and a beautiful landscape which you can walk around. It is also classified as a UNESCO heritage site. However, recommended to get a tour guide to truly understand and appreciate its history.

  • 5/5 Chris B. 1 year ago on Google
Hard not to compare to Hue citadel which is more extensive and better preserved, having perhaps not been bombed quite so much. However, perhaps UNESCO status has given this site the resources to have some really interesting exhibits. Information on the examination and graduation process may seem pretty prosaic but brings to life the reality of life at the time.

Worth visiting. 30 000VD entrance fee includes the access to the historic complex the museums and to the excavation site across the main road. Entrance to the flagtower is not included. The flagtower can be accessed through the Vietnam Military History Museum. The place is huge and a couple of hours is not enough to explore the entire site. The excavation site across the street is usually being overlooked but is worth visiting. The former colonial military structures are turned into museums. Not all are open, especially the second floors which are turned into stock rooms. There are two bunkers within the complex that can easily be missed. One is located to the left of the big drum and turtle statue and the other is inside the mint green building. Plenty of stores and a cafe that sell refreshments. Lots of open space and ongoing diggings

While there’s not much of the citadel left here, there are a few very interesting areas to explore. The small museums do a great job of presenting the history of the site and include some interesting artifacts. My favorite part, however, was the command center. We walked through the grounds and out the side exit, all told we spent about 2 hours here.

It was a historically interesting afternoon. The gardens as well as the interior design are very well maintained. I was lucky to have caught such a beautiful day.

Stumbled upon this while trying to head to the one of the pagoda. this area has a lot to explore. Even if u are done with this place, you walk around the surrounding, there are alot of sightseeings/monuments etc. I would say fork out 1-2 hours to enjoy this place. The underground meeting rooms/bunkers are really cool. I was pretty amazed! This place has no guide, u are on your own but u can read about each places with eng description

It has a bit of everything! Nice garden views, museum facts, archeological digging site and lookout points. It’s 30,000 Dong per person and we took a slow walk through spending about 1.5 hours here.

Very cool site to visit, there are some pretty gardens to wander about as well as a fair few exhibition halls on imperial Vietnam. While we were there there seemed to be quite a bit of construction going on. The main highlight was a war bunker that was great fun to wander around and an unexpected surprise!

My family of six made the trek out to the Imperial Citadel from our hotel near the cathedral in the old quarter. We paid a total of 90k vnd (30k for people 15 and over) for admission. The ticket office is at the south gate side, not north like it shows on Google maps. Our three youngest children got in free. We were not expecting to enjoy our time as much as we did. Like other reviewers mention, there are many exhibits. It's important to note that not all the exhibits have a/c. We were glistening by the end of our visit, for sure. But it didn't take away from our experience. You can make your trip as fast or as long as you want. We spent a total of two hours at the main site (Southgate, exhibits, military bunker, military headquarter, and princess pagoda). When you exit, you can cross the street to see exhibit 18, or the archeological site, where you will need to show your ticket again to enter. It's an interesting walk through the excavated areas. We spent an additional 20 minutes or so at this site.

Ticket : 30.000 dong / person Worth a visit ! Idk what to say, just a beautiful place and better watch the weather forecast first. We had to walk a lot and luckily it was not so sunny. Mostly we went to rooms with air conditioners, so if the temp. outside is not so hot, then you won't feel so exhausted after going in and out.

We visited the citadel on a rainy day, so there was hardly any people around, which made it a nice experience. There are many toilets around, which I found really clean, and a couple of cafes.

  • 3/5 Marek B. 8 months ago on Google
The biggest value to visiting the Citadel is that it includes a nice park offering much needed respite from the traffic and bustle of Hanoi. It also contains one of the city's few playgrounds, which alone makes it worth the 1 USD admission price if you are travelling with kids and the weather allows for outdoor play. The Citadel also included some interesting, but not extraordinary, historic buildings, and a few small museums with small collections of artifacts from past Vietnamese rulling dynasties.

One of the highlights of my trip to Hanoi. Its ancient capital is so big, and it has so much history to learn from. There are different exhbits located in each building's.

The name Imperial is enough to get you going. The place is spread over a huge area and houses many things including the Citadel, museums, exhibitions, cafes and shops to name a few. The place is very well maintained and the surroundings are full of greenery. They are also renovating some things. The Citadel is well worth a visit and I loved the many lotus art placed throughout the area, a thing of beauty.

The Imperial Citadel is well worth a visit. While there is little left of the original (as it was moved to Hue 200+ years ago). The story it tells is interesting and dont miss the artefacts recovered 20 years ago in an archaeological dig. 30,000 dong and an hour or so well spent.

Its a go to place for people interested in history and interested in vietnam culture and past. It was maintained and clean. Then even have water puppet show..but we left it after few minutes coz it was in local language.

Impromtu visit to the World Heritage site but did not manage to cover the whole site as it was going to close at 5pm, only left an hour visitation for me. I managed to cover the South Gate and will definitely visit the place again to explore more!

Short walk from the ho chi mihn mausoleum. 30k VND entry. Few structures nice maintained and showcased. Nice gardens and tree lined paths to walk around. They Lso have regular events here on the sprawling grounds. Inside you will also find the general wartime headquarters with an impressive underground room that is located 3 floors deep. All the war cabinet rooms, vehicles etc are all well preserved and showcased.

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is an outstanding place of interest. Complex of historic buildings associated with the history of Vietnam located in the center of Hanoi. I highly recommend.

Really impressing complex of historic buildings, which gives you glimpse into Vietnam's imperial past. The Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel is recognized as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. This citadel has a big historical significance therefore visiting it should definitely be on your Hanoi bucket list. Plan to spend here around an hour or two.

Very nice citadel. Walking in there for a couple hours is peaceful and is a nice break from the outside constant traffic. Many exhibits bring to life the story. Very educational.
