Five stars across the board for price, location, aesthetics, provisions, sleep quality, and more. Among other things you get free DIY laundry, an entire kitchen at your disposal in the common area, and a kitchenette with a microwave and mini-fridge in your room. Bathroom has enough towels to dry an elephant. There's also WiFi, but maybe you should just go play with the cats on your private lanai after tossing your phone into the surrounding wilderness. Mahana House is an excellent deal in comparison to many other hotels from sparse to fancy -- there's no looming suspicion of being nickel-and-dimed, no tacky decor, no ominous outlines on the carpets. The distance from town is a feature, not a bug. 10/10 would stay again.

We absolutely loved our stay here! Our biggest regret is not booking more nights to enjoy this beautiful location! Our cottage was adorable, the coffee was excellent, and the hosts were so accommodating. We especially loved getting to see all of the cats, especially our new friend Radar! Highly recommend staying here. We hope to return someday!!

Our stay couldn't have been more ideal or relaxed. Gentle ocean breeze, open lanais, and guest suites that were stocked with thoughtful touches for anything a guest could want like coffee, utensils, a mini fridge, an abundance of towels, and a Sleep Number mattress just to name a few. And amenities that even hotels won't offer like an open laundry room, stocked medical supplies, and beach equipment. We were delighted by the cats who roam around (outside only) as well as the fruit trees ripe for the picking (longans and oranges when we visited!). Hospitality is really infused in every part of this establishment, and what really went above and beyond is when we left a Kindle behind. Very quickly, it was shipped to the mainland to our home in Washington. We couldn't be more grateful to Randy, the crew of cats, and this slice of paradise - we're already dreaming of our next stay!

Mahana House offers a unique experience on the Big Island. A beautiful and peaceful inn with so many perks. Alison and Randy have thought of every little thing that their guests might need and made it available at their fingertips, and they are always happy to offer helpful and insightful advice about the Big Island. You are surrounded by magnificent views of the countryside and ocean at the inn, and the drive to popular sights is easy and picturesque.

We had an absolutely lovely stay at the Mahana House Country Inn! We stayed in one of the cottages and they are clean, well decorated, and have an amazing private lanai where we spent most of our time and watched gorgeous sunsets. The fresh fruit is delicious and the farm is beautiful to walk around. We really enjoyed having the rescue cats at the B&B and made sure to get some pets in multiple times a day!

This place was purrfect. Stayed here on a recent visit to the Big Island on our Hilo leg of the trip and this place is beautiful. Incredibly clean and the owner is super friendly. The property is gorgeous and we had a beautiful sunrise every morning we were there. There was fresh fruit from the farm. To top it off, the sweet cats that roam the property always swing by to say good morning. We would definitely stay there again.

Mahana House Inn was perfection. We loved our stay here, and wished we had more time to spend in this lovely setting. Randy was a great host. The community kitchen and laundry was such a nice touch, and both were stocked with everything you could have needed. The bed was so very comfortable, and the room was comfortable, roomy, and clean. Let's not forget CATS! I love them, and Freddie, George, Twyla, Radar, Gobo, Sweet Potato, and Ding Dong were really the highlight of our stay.

Such an incredible place of comfort and peace The hosts make your stay so wonderful with the use of the kitchen and laundry and snorkelling gear We we’re able to sit in our lanai looking at the ocean watching the stars(when clouds allowed) Loved the environmental aspects too Also loved the fruit from the farm that was put out for your taking Here you could drive into Hilo easily or head up north

This cottage is now my top-rated lodge ever. I never expected an inn to be so incredibly beautiful, cozy and dry (compared to other mountain inns)What surprised me even more is that several extremely friendly cats would approach you for a rub. My heart just melted here.

Perfect place to stay when you are checking out the east side of the island. If you are looking for something that feels a little more authentic than a resort, this is the place. Pick your own fruit, explore the beautiful grounds, and hang out with the all the cats. Loved our stay and hopefully we will be back. Thank you!

Couldn’t recommend this place enough! We enjoyed a couple nights on the property and we were blown away with everything. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The attention to detail was obvious. And then there’s the cats. We were greeted upon arrival by a friendly gang of cats. All throughout our stay they were hanging around and offering little kitty hugs and cuddles. A really nice bonus to what was already a great stay. Tip - if you’re staying in the inn portion, try to get the corner room, if possible. It’s a bit quieter and backs onto the common room which is usually quite quiet too.

Traveling from Hilo to Kona, Mahana house has everything. A common room with a FULL kitchen, we cooked a steak dinner on the lanai and enjoyed the friendly cats. Then we borrowed snorkel gear, boogie boards, and lawn chairs and made a beach day happen. Much better than a local Hilo hotel- personal attention and a beautiful sunrise view from the lanai. Highly recommend.

A highlight of our Hawaiian vacation. Our cottage was a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy being immersed in a beautiful orchard setting . Clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Walk around the lush grounds and pick your own fruit or sit out on your large balcony and enjoy the diverse weather. A large common house attached to the suites has everything needed to cook or bbq your meals. Randy went over and above to make us comfortable. The only thing that I would recommend is that the cottages could use their own BBQ's as there is ample space on the decks. It would have been nice to have been able to cook without having to go out.

Mahana House is lovely! It is comfortable, beautiful, and friendly. Randy and Alison have thought of every detail to make their inn a perfect getaway. Our room was luxurious and the great room and well-equipped kitchen provided a fantastic hangout spot. I can’t wait to spend more time there.

Absolutely loved our stay at the Mahana House! The room was spacious and had everything we could ask for (kitchen, fridge, separate eating area, utensils, TV with Netflix). Although the property was around 20 minutes from Hilo, we actually appreciated this as it was in a very quiet and peaceful area. The best part of the property however was the cats! We loved the numerous friendly cats that roamed the property and came by to say hi on a daily basis. That was definitely a great experience, and made this property stand out. Would love to come back and visit in the future.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mahana Inn. The view, (Sleep Number King Bed) and thoughtful details to room amenities were as advertised. Our host, Randy went above and beyond to trim palm trees in the distance to enhance our ocean view from the lanai. Our stay was quiet, tranquil and romantic. It’s a gem!!

Randy is an accommodating, friendly, and professional host/owner. The rooms were quiet and comfortable, the bathrooms well stocked and clean, and the common room was spacious and tidy. There were tons of books, maps, board games, and other general reference material for us to peruse. Extra special bonus points for the cats :)

This place is a hidden gem. It's so calm, peaceful, and serene. The rooms are cozy, modern, and the products that they use are top notch. The thought of a community kitchen did not appeal to me initially, but in the end I found it to be very convenient to have access to a full kitchen including pots, pans, seasonings, eggs, butter, you name it. Having access to a laundry room on a long vacation proved to be invaluable. The Mahana House is truly special and we can't wait to visit again.

Super new and clean house and super nice host. View is also fantastic. Worth more than the price. Lovely cats, fresh bananas, convenient laundry… Only drawback is the road to the house is unpaved (2WD can also pass though) and the trees are not tall enough to let your vehicle to comfortably pass through.

We just returned home from Hawaii and we couldn’t have loved our time at Mahana House anymore! It was beautiful, peaceful, comfortable, and quiet! Loved the kitties greeting us each day! And the owners were super helpful! The guide they provided made planning our days so easy! It was priceless! We can’t wait to come back!

Such a peaceful and beautiful oasis on a farm. There are gorgeous views, fresh fruits, friendly cats, and a communal area with a full kitchen, board games, and books! The rooms are thoughtfully supplied and the beds are incredibly comfortable. Could not recommend this enough if you enjoy being away from crowds but still ideally located to explore Big Island (and...if you're cool with cats). Thanks for such a memorable and relaxing stay Randy and Alison!

We stayed in one of the newly built 3 cottages. The first night the moon was down at 7:30 pm and the sky was clear so we got to see the milky way, the stars and some shooting stars! In the next morning it rained just enough to see a double rainbow. The kitchenet in the room is fully equipped (coffee, tea, sugar, sweatner) The kitchen in the main building has the essentials (oil, salt, pepper...) and whatever the previous guests left behind (a community feeling!). The layout is well-thought. A lot of shelf space, easy to walk around. It is just about 15 mins away from Akaka falls and the botanical garden. If you want to be left alone and enjoy the nature this is it. If you want a resort town feeling don't bother to come here.

Mahana is definitely the BEST place to stay in Hilo. We lived in the cottage and everything is perfect! The air smells like lychees, mattress is adjustable for both sides, even the hand soap is Method Aluminum series. The lani has amazing full ocean view, it’s nice to watch sunrise every morning and enjoy the breeze kissing your hair and cheeks. Randy the owner is very responsive and welcoming, he’s always very helpful but also respect guests privacy. Mahana made my trip at Hilo so enjoyed and I already recommend it to friends who has big island trip plan.
