Fortress castle. Originally from 1065. Reconstructed as a medieval castle in 1675. Last military use ended 1765, and the Keep (centraal stronghold Tower) was demolished 1924. There is a youth hostel now. It is a big climb, 290m above sea. I unfortunately arrived at night

The castle is small but still it's a good option to visit once.

A great hiking option, there is a restaurant on top of the hill, next to the castle. You can climb up on some castle towers, the view onto surrounding area is worth it. There are also car parking places available if you want to reach the castle quick.

Really cool castle. Drove all the way up. Parking was available. Was able to go inside and have a drink. Souvenirs available. Free entry.

Located on top of a hill, you can both drive and hike to visit the castle. There are two options for hiking, 1. You take the regular road route up or 2. You take a little more challenging route up the mountain that allows only one person to walk up or down at a time. I took the second route and I must warn you, it looked rarely used and was overgrown with plants, Don't take this route if you are with children. The climb up takes you through plenty of honey farms, and you can also buy honey from these local farms. The hike takes about an hour, depending on your fitness levels. Photographers paradise. There is not much to explore at the Starkenberg castle itself but the view is breath taking. There is a Biergarten located with the castle grounds and the general atmosphere is relaxed. Overall, worth a visit. Key themes Family and kids friendly Parking available Toilets available Biergarten Hiking Nature Wildlife Views from the mountain History Photography

Beautiful overview from the Castle to see Heppenheim Old Town. There 2 Options to walk up a short version(5 Minuten Weg) or a longer but beautiful for pictures taking. I personally would recommend going up the long version and down the short way, we're you might can pick some sour cherries 🍒as there a lot 😉

An easy walk on ancient cobblestone streets to the top. Spectacular views. Nice cafe restaurant. The hostel looks like a great place to take the kids for a night.

Do not know what white plastic windows and ugly metal shiny staircases have to do with old castle. Maybe modern Hessen ugly design. Please do not forget your table tennis set, there are more tables here then in all Kinderplazes in the vicinity together. Nice view.

Nice walk up to the tower. There is also possibility to go by car till the end. They have now youth hostel in the tower. I think they also have star gazing events there for kids. Well maintained, best to from wed- Sunday for more lively atmosphere.

It'll require a nice walk then give you a nice view of Heppenheim. And people can enjoy some drink in the Biergarten next to the castle.

Castle is not spectaculair but the views are. Almost a 1000 years old! The 5 minute routes up the hill are pretty intense, take enough water.
