Stayed for 2 nights in a private en suite room. Clean, basic and comfortable. Good security with key card access. Lots of social spaces around the hostel. Amazing self catering facilities. We paid for the buffet breakfast which was very good value. Really friendly staff (let my son take home a book he had started reading in return for a small donation to charity). Perfectly positioned for walking straight up the mountains. What a joy, we will be back.

Brilliant stay here, felt very homely. Clean rooms and bathrooms. Lovely staff and beautiful grounds. Had a great time here. Easy access to trails and great value overall. Also has a self catered kitchen access which was amazing.

Excellent base for exploring the dark peak area of the peak district, with Castleton, Mam Tor, Losehill, Cavedale, Hope, Edale, Win Hill, the 4 Castleton Caverns, Kinder Scout, Jacob's ladder and the Ladybower/Howden reservoir walks. Large lovely refurbished characterful Gothic Mansion, with an annex (which can you rent whole), peaceful and extensive grounds (including 3 interesting glamping pods with solar power - which apparently sleep up to 4 each) and a camping barn with a good sized field to add more tents. Main house has an comfortable and impressive hall with wooden panelling and 2 sides of large windows and several large Chesterfield sofas to relax and chat and play games. TV in main hallway, which has several sets of tub armschairs to sit and chat. More tub chairs in the landing at top of the imposing wooden flight of stairs, and several bookcases overflowing with (mainly old, mostly irrelevant) books. Our room had 1 bunk bed and was spacious and en-suite with a cupboard and the normal YHA bedside integrated light/socket/table. There was a small hanging impliment to lock away things. Our friends stayed next door, but they did comment that the pipes kept them awake at night as the water was noisy. The large shared self-catering kitchen in the main building was excellent and had 6 cooking points with separate hobs, sinks and ovens, and several shared fridges (label your things with the provided stickers and pens or they will be thrown away nad one small freezer which needed defrosting). Note that unfortunately people will go through your stuff - happened to us several times in 2 nights - no damage done, they probably just wanted some milk or tea bags. No kettles, but better than that was the Burco wall boiler with instant hot water (not quite boiling so not great for tea). Clean provided cockery, cutlery etc, good knives and chopping boards. Several one cup cafetieres NO tea pots. Plenty of clean tea towels, new dish towels, washing liquid. Several microwaves. Mugs slightly small. Wine glasses. Obligatory YHA large warm drying room. Lots and lots of tables outside to sit and enjoy. Plenty of parking - worrying sign on entry about charging, but this is just to scare off people trying to park for free that are not staying - register your car when you check in. Long driveway to the house from the main road, but there is a walking route that is accessible directly from the car park by the main house at the rear of the property. Lots of sheep and lambs when we visited (April 2022) - all over the grounds including upto the doors. Good breakfast - book night before. Evening meal, can book an hour before, not sure if 'walk-ins' accepted. Reasonable range of ice-creams, souvenirs, snacks and drinks available at check in desk/bar including cold beers, cider and wine. Note very very flaky Wifi, sometimes unusable - best signal in kitchen - 'the cloud' - worse/none in annex. Poor phone signal, but just about usable (EE). Property is 15 mins walk from Castleton 'town', paved paths and bridge - think the old YHA in town is no longer there, but this property is much better/bigger/characterful/grander - just (?) unfortunately further 'out'. In our experience it was the ideal distance for a nice walk to dinner in Castleton and a return home walk. Annex seems to have smaller rooms (for number of people), but maybe ideal for groups to hire, and contains its own spacious kitchen and less grand lounge area - use main building. Staff friendly, especially the female staff. The cook seemed to be especially worried about counting people in and out of breakfast. Don't foget to strip your beds before departure. Conference room (library) and large meeting room - both in main building available for hire. For some reason also as a (pretend) Dr Who full sized Tardis / Police Box (can't go in) - another one at the internal entrance to Treak Cliff Cavern. General YHA Improvement Idea: perhaps being able to ask for free tea bags / coffee and a bit of milk at the reception desk might reduce people messing in other people's kitchen stuff?

Stayed here for 3 days and the overall experience was great. Fantastic Location and the staff is friendly as well. In terms of the hotel food, I would suggest ordering breakfast here and not the dinner menu. There is ample parking space outside. Also had a reserved parking spot. There are 2 dining rooms, a nice and big community hall and a small library where you can read books or work from your laptop.

Just had the most amazing weekend here with Muslim Hikers 🥾 A great space for the whole family and friends ..Great sized kitchen with everything you need .. plenty of toilets.. a drying room .. a spacious lounge with comfortable chairs and sofas . A beautiful outdoor space where we got to meet a goat 🐐 In the evening we had a campfire and spent hours roasting marshmallows and jacket potatoes .. wonderful friendly staff that were so welcoming.. Jack was great 😊 kitchen staff were so lovely and served us up yummy meals. The rooms are standard with each bed having a night light and charging area. We had 4 bunks in our room and a bathroom. The only thing I would say is that the windows need new latches which probably wouldn’t be an issue during the summer but it did keep me up during the night as it kept flapping in the wind.. but overall the stay was very pleasant. Great stay if your going off hiking for the weekend A**** Would definitely stay again :)

Stayed in land pods for one night. Such a magical experience. Staff was super nice they gave us extra wood logs for barbecue too and they opened up lounge for us to make it more comfortable

I’ve been to a couple hostels around the country and I have to say that this one was definitely not my favourite. The rooms were quite small and the windows all have unremovable child locks on them, making the room stuffy and far too warm especially in comparison to the rest of the hostel which was quite frigid. I received a fan from the hostel staff who were quite friendly but it was very noisy and kept me awake. The room also did not have an attached bathroom meaning i had to use the communal showers which was quite cold since the hot water had run out. The food was alright in quality and quantity but far too overpriced. The view of the grounds and the surrounding fields was very nice and definitely made up for the fact there were no towels in the showers. All in all the location was nice but everything else was rather substandard.

Great Youth Hostel and great stay. Self catering kitchen is well equipped, allowing a number of families to cook/prepare meals at the same time. Very friendly and helpful staff. Fab location and also in easy walking distance to town with a number of pubs/restaurants. The only issue (which was passed on to staff at the time) was the large and deep potholes in the access road, which are really dangerous to cars, bikes and pedestrians, especially at night with unlit road (torch required if walking). Looking forward to our next visit. Thank you!

The location is incredible and the rooms are small but comfortable. All the food is extremely nice and really cheap. Only negative is the WiFi is almost unusable in most places.

Loved the friendliness if the staff, for example Jack. In also like the atmosphere of the hostel. (Even though we are now older and traveling with our kids). Very nice field to play for the kids. The private sleeping room only had a window at the roof making it only suitable for resting and sleeping. It was clean and had a good shower.

I love the place in general. I will be back for sure. Its an old Victorian house ❤️ with a lot of sheep around. The staff were amazing!!! Breakfast is small but enough 🤤 The room, i paid for a 4-bed room for myself and i ended up in an 8-bed room 😅😅🤣 its was fun to have all of that for myself.

Location is great for hiking and the outdoors. Located an approx 40 min walk from the nearest train station. The amenities are great and most importantly the building despite its age is very very well heated. The food is fantastic - portion sizes for the veggie are far too small (lasagne half the size of the meat one). I would also suggest slippers for your room / bathroom as the bathroom floors aren’t deep cleaned. Great warm duvets and good pillows, good variation of dorm sizes and lovely communal spaces too. Friendly staff -nothing was too much of a big ask - thank you Jack and Team.

I didn’t appreciate the lack of notice in activity as we was forced to do most of them (we went hiking but nobody knew we was supposed to and many of the children were scared of heights) I thought the place practically ran itself as there was rarely any staff on site. The rooms was spacious but lacked in decor, the toilets where unsanitary. The food was okay but overpriced however I did have a lovely hot chocolate. If you are into outdoor adventures and living on the wild side of life YHA is for you.

Car park is way too small. You need to provide extra parking in the acres of fields around the place. Guy on the front desk was rude and clueless. Room was insanely hot and never cooled down all night

We were only camping so can't comment on the accommodation. But the facilities were great, areas clean, staff friendly and helpful and the area was well-connected with some good hikes. Good showers, the continental breakfast was nice. There's a nice walk to Hope Station (about an hour) that avoids roads, and it's also a short walk to Castleton, but far enough to feel quiet and peaceful. An excellent hostel.l and camping ground.

I stayed in a land pod with my partner and we really enjoyed it. The website says that it is for 4 people but it’s too small for 4 I think. We had access to a kitchen and a bathroom, they will be situated outside the landpod. You will have keys to access them. You will even be given a medium sized bag to full of logs for a fire. We will definitely visit again.

Bed was comfy and room was a really good standard. Bed had light and USB charging point. Plenty of plug sockets, storage space and hanging hooks. Good shower and toliet. Everything was very clean. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great and good price. Very filling. Has an excellent lounge and self catering kitchen. A chair in the room would be nice. Location is stunning with lots of great walks from the door.

Stayed here recently for 2 nights with a group of friends across 2 rooms. Location is excellent, able to do the loop across Mam Tor to Lose Hill and walk into Castleton for food and drinks straight from the Hostel. Large potholes on the single track to the car park could do with filling in though. Staff overall were okay but largely disinterested and borderline rude at times. The hostel is a great building but needs refurbishment throughout. Holes in the ceilings, stains everywhere, damp smell in the rooms. Sleep was poor as the rooms were far too warm, even after opening the windows and sleeping in the bed directly under them. Can't grumble too much as it's not expensive to stay, the attitude and lack of manners from some staff were the biggest issue. Would stay again but I'll certainly be looking at other options first.

Visited the old hostel in the center of Castleton many times, and this was my/ our first visit to Losehill. Large, interesting architecture but somewhat corporate. Looks like a "flag ship" hostel, but we just felt like two of the many. Double room felt cramped, and metal bunk did no favours, even if room was ensuite. Kitchen superb; space and unbelievable level of equipment. Visited in December in wet and wild weather. Never saw it in daylight, so would be good to try again in summer.

I didn't need a view, but the windows in my room were above head height so I would have need to hold my phone up to see what the view was. That's only a fussy quibble though, as Losehill Hall is a beautiful location overall. The cooked breakfast was very tasty and filling, followed by a pleasant walk in the grounds to help walk off the calories!

I loved the location. It was like going into an old castle. The pathway to the accomodation is awesome. We checked in at 4pm..had rest and went to visit nearby place. Came back at 9:00pm. I was shocked seeing the clear sky. There were polestars passing by too. Stargazing was wonderful. I managed to capture the star trails. Morning we had a pleasant continental breakfast. It is available in the premises. They provide breakfast, and dinner. Good place to have photoshoot😊.

Great stay at this YHA, set just minutes walk to the lovely village of Castleton. Staff and service were excellent, breakfast was traditional, good standard and plentiful. great place to base yourself for caves, walks and local history of the Peaks.

A beautiful building to nestle in. Many cosy corners to sit and read. The self catering kitchen is one of the biggest I've seen at YHA'S ! The only thing lacking was a games room for the kids to play in. Boardgames were at a low supply but we got a pack of cards. Would not recommend buying the pizza there. It was quite costly around £8 a person for something that appeared to be cold and not enjoyable to eat. Definetly use the kitchens and do your own for a fraction of the cost. Beds and room were comfy as always and the location was fantastic. Good public transport links we used the bus and train, 3 teenagers in tow!

Free youth hostel it's a beautiful place, modern clean and very well equipped inside, but for almost hotel prices it is limited. Flaky WiFi dose not cover annex, and with no mobile signal, limiting. The small double bunk room has nowhere to sit, if you do not have the bottom bunk. The staff are nice enough, Don't have any particular commitment to the place.

Great location, lovely building and friendly staff. However, didn't get much sleep. The twin room was very hot despite it being 15c outside and rest of the hostel normal. The window is limited with a child lock. You're also at the mercy of other guests camping outside, who were noisy past 1am.

Nice place however the noice on the second night was horrendous…there was some really noisy campers and the management did nothing to stop it, it went on till 4.00am. The breakfast was overpriced and I didn’t find the staff very helpful. All in all a bad experience!

I couldn't even use what I pay for because I had Covid and told booking.com as this hotel is impossible to contact via phone. I have been told by booking.com that the hotel agreed to move the booking because of medical reasons without charge even without enough notice. I had to move my booking twice due to covid and eventually, we agreed it is easier to cancel and rebook when I know when I can go. Then the hotel decided to charge me anyway for the full amount and despite telling me in writing they will not. In fact, I wanted to move my booking not cancel it but after someone called Jack from the hotel's reception told me I can't get my money back as they didn't get enough notice I do not want to use them anymore. I read in other people's reviews that hotel staff is rude and now I experienced that they have no integrity without even getting there. I could just move my booking and now that I am able to travel again I could use it but because they said they can cancel free of charge we did that instead of keep moving it. This is just poor. Don't use them. Really bad customer service. Don't give them your card details!

Have just returned from a 3 night stay at YHA Castleton and from the minute I walked through the door I felt welcome. Check in was smooth and seamless and the staff were friendly. I chose the Hope Valley for its hiking and was certainly not disappointed, within 5 minutes from the hostel you can start the ascent up to Losehill which takes you to the ridge that runs all the way to Mam Tor. The staff were knowledgable about the local area, the various walks and were able to give me tips on the weather conditions (which were also printed and posted up on the wall every day) all useful stuff especially when heading out on your own. The choice of places to relax, have a drink and eat were plentiful - highlights being the upstairs lounge/library and the large ground floor lounge too. Bear in mind this is a hostel so expect big family groups, lots of children running about etc, it was also Easter half term so this is to be expected. Will be back again in the future for more Peak district exploring. Thanks :)

Unfortunately was not conducive for a good night’s rest. We were a group of 3 - given room B1, unfortunately the room was situated between the 2 ground floor main shared toilets. Randomly ALL NIGHT the toilet flush and pipes kept making loud gurgling noises, we were completely unstable to sleep. The single bed had non- fitting bed sheets.. The rest of the facilities were adequate.

This is a great place to stay for couple of nights. I will strongly recommend this. It looks absolutely stunning in the middle of vast green landscape. A perfect location to explore Castleton village and the amazing green hills ....

Excellent spot. Rooms were spotless. Simple and clean, staff were super friendly. Perfect for a base to so some walking.

  • 1/5 Va S. 1 year ago on Google
Clean if rather clinical. I suspect I’d give it 4 stars had we stayed in a shared form, however Room B1 was horrendous… a private three bed en-suite room which had water stains along the ceiling, bed sheets that didn’t fit the mattress and an echo from the pipes, drains and shared toilet that meant frequent horrendous loud noises stopped even fatigued hikers from being able to get more than twenty minutes sleep at a stretch. All that for £120!

  • 3/5 Helen S. 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful buildings and grounds. Good location. Some of the staff were very abrupt and quite rude. Overpriced due to it being New Year’s Eve. Check in not until 5pm so waiting around to check in and then everyone wants to use the kitchen facilities at once with it being tea time. Room basic but clean and comfortable. Kitchen fairly well equipped. The kitchen shut at 9.30pm to be cleaned and didn’t get reopened again until the next morning meaning we had no access to our drinks in the fridge, a kettle or food. I feel this is far too early especially since it was New Year’s Eve and we were wanting a few drinks to celebrate. Had to keep our drinks with us from 9.30pm. We weren’t made aware of this closure at check in and the sign on the kitchen door just says closed for cleaning at (3 times) throughout the day. It didn’t say it won’t reopen and we only found out from a rude member of staff. The vending machine in the lobby was broken so couldn’t get cold drinks or snacks out of that and reception and the cafe/bar closed at 10pm. Felt a bit like we were on a curfew and after paying £120 with yha discount, didn’t get to use the facilities as expected.
