Cave Dale is a beautiful walk up from the village either side of steep cliffs with a stream running down the path up onto the peaks. A great alternative start to a walk across to Mam Tor. Couple of nice pubs down in the village to get warm in after. On street free parking. You'll see the castle and some cave entrances as you head up the climb into the hills. Recommended for something a bit different to start your walk.

Great place to visit. The drive coming towards this place is just amazing, although the roads are slightly narrow. We started our hike from Peak Cavern all day car park which served as a great starting point for a round loop.heading towards Cave Dale right round to Mam Tor and which was about 10km in total. It can get steep in some places and the rock surfaces can be slippery so appropriate footwear is a must.

The path here starts literally from the village. Signposted so easily found. Immediately you are rewarded with fantastic scenery as you walk through the gorge. The pathway is rocky with shallow water running over it so make sure you wear sensible footwear. When we reached the first gate at the top we took a walk to the right which had stunning views of the valley and castle. We followed the walk down the grassy fields to end up back in Castleton village. Didn't take long and very beautiful.

A short walk from the village, Cave Dale is a beautiful location for walks and downhill mountain biking. The dale itself is impressive but Peveril Castle adds another layer of drama to the scenery. A fairly easy path to begin with but gets steeper and rockier further up before ascending onto the high ground where there are expansive vistas.

After reading reviews, thought it would be s good walk. We done route 5, hard but so worth it for the views. Completed it within 4 hours with kiddos. Lovely pubs. Definitely do it again. Crazy weather, sunny and hot one minute, cold and windy another, then Hale and snow but just amazing. Lovely drive the scenery, just beautiful.

A stunning location to walk in, I went downhill as I was doing a circular walk from my campsite at the top of Winnats Pass. Please make sure you wear appropriate footwear, due to the ground you’re walking on. As you can see from the pics, it’s not the easiest of surfaces for a stretch of it (I did see someone wearing walking sandals-great for flat level ground but not when they give you no ankle support whatsoever). Next time I’ll attempt to go up (I prefer walking uphill!). Being part mountain goat may help you haha, unless you’re bonkers and ride your bike down itβ€¦πŸ˜¬

Rocky but so worth it for the views. You can see Pervil Castle and even climb up to it if you're brave. Nice walk, just wear proper walking boots.

Came through here on a loop through cave dale Mam tor and loose hill. Amazing walk and scenery. Quite a steep incline to begin with but levels out through the fields.

Great walk down Cave Dale from across the farmland from Peak Forest via Winnats Pass. The rear aspect of Pevrill Castle makes a good photo!

Stunning place, no wonder why it has been selected for films (house of the dragon). It is a easy/ medium hike. The view from the top and the castle is mind-blowing. Great spot. The village at the bottom is simply charming!

Spectacular scenery, even on what turned out to be a bit of a grotty day. Loose limestone under foot, so can be difficult , especially when wet. After a lot of rain we walking up through running water. Good boots and stick needed. Worth it though

Stunning place, beautiful rocky walk. Wear sensible footwear that has grip and waterproof if your visiting in the winter period.

What a stunning place to visit. It is a very challenging ride down and a challenging walk up or down.

Not the easiest of walks/climbs, but well worth the effort as the views back to the Hope Valley and beyond are amazing.

So much better than Mam Tor. Beautiful scenery, you walk under Peveril Castle, views from the top and whilst walking through are beautiful and it's so much quieter.

Spent a weekend in Castleton and this is the #1 spot I'd recommend to anyone visiting. The dale is a really interesting example of the geography in the area-- very dramatic and beautiful views. The castle above the dale is historic and adds some visual interest, really drives home how important defense was. I'd hate to be the one trying to climb up the side to attack!

Great place to walk and next to the town. Amazing views and hidden away enough so it doesn't get busy.

Had a wonderful time with friends while visiting the cave dale and good weather made it more memorable. It tooks us 5 hours to complete because was busy in capturing the beauty. must visit place if you are going to peak district.

Absolutely beautiful place. Went on walk number 4 on the Derbyshire walks in the area which was about 5 miles. The walk is relatively challenging when walking up winnats pass but the rest is nice and gentle.

Make your way, steadily, up this rocky limestone gorge path, picking your way through rock and streaming water whilst you take in the sights of Peveril Castle. Head onwards to take in the heights and sights of Winnats Pass.

Strange little entrance which open up into a very wide dale but beware for the sheep poo and loose rocks. Can be easier to walk along the grasses edges rather than the middle strip of loose stone but then you have to dodge the sheep poo. Further up the Dale there are a few shallow caves you can enter but the larger ones, those that are unsafe, are blocked off. Great views down towards Castleton and up to Peveril Castle. There is a circular walk up and over the hill and down to Winnats Road. Avoid when very wet or Snow is on the ground unless your prepared.

This little valley is magical. I sat down here to meditate for 1.5 hours. Looked up to probably kestrels fling over from one side to the other... Really miss this place now.

Great hike. Tricky on the way down we choose but boy we love a challenge. Wonderful views, sheep and cows. What else could we want...

Would recommend this walk to anyone, what a gorgeous route. Need proper footwear as its rather rocky and easy to roll an ankle. Fab views over Castleton.

  • 5/5 Priya P. 2 years ago on Google
We nearly missed this doing Mam Tor and a hike over Winnats Pass but it is beautiful. Very different to other hikes as youre surrounded by lush green hills inside a gorge. Absolutely stunning.

Incredible walk. I'd advise you to wear walking boots as the rocks are quite slippery at the top of the hill. There are lots of uneven surfaces and this walk isn't suitable for anyone who requires walking aids. It gets quite busy after 9am. Parking is close by and usually Β£6-Β£7 for all day parking.
