traditions,
court
conventions
and
promoted
the
usage
of
the
Marathi

Sanskrit
languages,
replacing
Persian
in
court
and
administration.
Praised
for
his
chivalrous
treatment
of
women,
Shivaji
employed
people
of
all
castes
and
religions,
including
Muslims
and
Europeans,
in
his
administration
and
armed
forces.
Until
1657,
Shivaji
maintained
peaceful
relations
with
the
Mughal
Empire.
Shivaji
offered
his
assistance
to
Aurangzeb,
the
son
of
the
Mughal
Emperor
and
viceroy
of
the
Deccan,
in
conquering
Bijapur
in
return
for
formal
recognition
of
his
right
to
the
Bijapuri
forts
and
villages
under
his
possession.
Dissatisfied
with
the
Mughal
response,
and
receiving
a
better
offer
from
Bijapur,
he
launched
a
raid
into
the
Mughal
Deccan.The
headquarters
in
Mumbai
of
the
Western
Railway
zone,
a
UNESCO
World
Heritage
Site,
was
renamed
Chhatrapati
Shivaji
Terminus
in
1996.
