The Talangama Wetland offers visitors a close encounter with nature, without leaving the city of Colombo. It is situated in the outskirts of Colombo at Talangama Battaramulla close to the administrative capital of Sri Jayawardenepura and takes less than an hours’ drive from Colombo. This wetland encompasses a manmade irrigation reservoir, lush green paddy fields, canals, ponds and marshes; the diversity making it a unique and favourable ecosystem for diverse species of fauna and flora to thrive in. December to March provides you a good opportunity see resident, endemic and migratory birds at Talangama Wetland. But all other months are also good for bird watching. Just 20 minutes from Colombo city centre and is better to use a privately hired vehicle. There is no particular opening or closing times at Talangama Wetland but it is best visited from 6 AM to 8 AM and from 4 PM to 6 PM for best bird watching opportunities.

Apart from this, the tank is said to have been built by King Parakramabahu 6th during his reign. A must visit. A few kilometres away from the bustling city, lies a lake, rippling around a sanctuary of peace. Thalangama Lake is a quick escape to nature and one of the best places for bird-watching. The lush green paddy fields and marshes surrounding it, make for a favourable ecosystem for diverse species of flora and fauna. A walk in the wetland around this lake, early in the morning or in the evening could turn out to be one of the most peaceful times you could have by yourself. If you’re a birder or a photographer, you’ll be happy to spot kingfishers, purple-faced leaf monkeys, purple swamp hens, cormorants, sunbirds, lapwings, pelicans and a few water buffaloes being pecked by these birds. While there is enough activity here, it’s the kind that cancels all the chaos that urban life brings into our lives.

Ideal for a morning jog or evening walk around the lake. The scenic view and the cool breeze will give u the best feel. Habitat for many birds and fish.

The lake which was present since ancient times, is a marvellous place for bird watching. Many types endamic species of birds visit this lake. There is a magnificent view in the early morning with a cool breeze. Cold mist rolls down each morning adding more colour to the scene. If you're lucky you may also see the rear peacocks and pony as well

(Visited on 1 and 3 July 2023, reviewed on 19 July 2023) Although this might be just a lake in a residential neighbourhood, I liked the paddy fields and the lake located just opposite each other. The nature is amazing, and there are several playing in the lake, which makes it a peaceful environment to experience. What was even better was that there was a German guy named Pay who has been volunteering to help clean the rubbish around the lake daily in the mornings and evenings for the past six years. "Ask what you can do for your country, not what the country can do for you." - Former U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Bitte Danke (Thank you very much), Pay for taking your initiative to help out! I think we need everyone to help out in things that we can do like this, instead of waiting for somebody else to do it for us, if we want our natural environments to be clean for us.

I went here couple of months back just to get away from all the chaos from covid. It was a good place to do some birding in the city and you may find some professional photographers around the lake. I could observe jacana,Cormorants, grebes, lesser Whistler ducks in and around the lake. I took some nice captures of the birds too, well I should visit this place if u live close by or on the way to somewhere else. Worth spending 1-2hours here, unless you are into some serious photography.

Great place to visit in the evening. Very near colombo. I was impressed when I went for the first time. You can bath on this place also. Also you can walk around the lake. There are couple of benches to sit as well. Place was not too crowded. You can park your car as well.

Thalangama Lake is close to ITN and home to wetland birds, butterfly species, many types of fishes, dragonflies, damselflies mammals, amphibians, reptiles and many terrestrial and aquatic plant species. One of the best bird watching site in colombo.

This lake is near the new Parliament House of Sri Lanka and is supposed to be a wetlands which bird-watchers. It is indeed away from the main roads but unfortunately there are houses right next to the lake, with human "developments" continuing. This lake is probably already polluted and it will only get worse. That's very sad.

Thalangama lake is said to be more than 100years old. A Japanese war plane, which had fallen down during WW II was recovered in early 90's. This is a calm and scenic place. An ideal location to relax in the evenings...

Best place for bird watching within Urban Colombo.

Nice place to chill! A cool breeze with a scenic view. It's safe to bathe in the lake, not very deep but there are certainly deep sections, beware if u do go swimming. There is plenty of room to park. Quiet and calm place. A lot of greenery. At times, the main section of the lake where people bathe tend to get overcrowded. Usually, it's nice place to chill and have a beer, or even take a lovely walk with your partner. It's pretty clean, as the neighbors tend to do a good job of cleaning the place (try not to leave your garbage if u do stop by).
