Very sacred temple🙏 You have to climb up to the Vihara geya, Bodhin wahanse and the pagoda. Further climb up and can get to the sacred huge Buddha statue which is visible to the highrises in Colombo.

Korathota Rajamaha Vihara (Temple) is one of the beautiful temples around Kaduwela, Athurugiriya. Went to there on a week day morning around 11:00 hrs temple wasn’t busy at all , there were some visitors but mostly empty on the top where huge Buddha’s statue is. If you like to spend some time without any distractions or stay away from busy life style it is ideal to visit Korathota temple on weekdays. Temple is with three levels second level there is a cave then next level up huge Buddha’s beautiful statue. It is so beautiful when you reach up there and with amazing view. I felt this is a good place to do some meditation too.

A beautiful temple located near a hill. A large Buddha statue is installed on top of the hill. The surroundings of the place are well visible. The Colombo Lotus Tower is also seen. Korathota Temple is located at a distance of 3.5 km from Kaduwela main bus stand. This is a beautiful ancient temple.☸️🙏❤️

The focal points of the Korathota Rajamaha Viharaya are the historic cave inscriptions and the six caves, which show signs of having been the dwelling place of monks in early times. Five naturally formed caves, can be seen high up on the rock that bounds the temple premises. A long flight of steps, recently built, leads up to the caves. All these caves have the ‘kataram’ carving, which is a groove or channel cut along the top of the overhanging rock, to prevent water dripping into the caves. This was a characteristic of that period.

To be honest this is the best temple I've ever visited. Even though it's situated within the urban areas, this temple is very natural and country type. Surrounded by mountains and lots of natural resources. Highly Recommended to everyone and specially recommended for Foreigners.

Western Province one of the ancient temple. Peace, good place to meditate... My request is young people must behave... If you don't believe then you should not go ideally. Even if you go you must respect and keep your own dignity..

Korathota Raja Maha Viharaya is a Buddhist temple situated near the Kaduwela area in Colombo District. We can reach this temple from the Athurugiriya or Kaduwela side on Athurugiriya- Kaduwela road. According to historical remains, the history of this temple is going to the Anuradhapura era. As reported, This is a very ancient temple built by King Devanampiyatissa. This is situated at a very attractive place in the Colombo district. We have to climb 800-1000 steps to reach the highest place of the temple. There are many Devala at the temple. There is an ancient Bodhi tree. This is believed that a powerful place.

Wonderful and beautiful temple. You can see lots of donated stuff from people in this temple. Lovely temple with a large collection of various Buddha statues, relics, artifacts and all things related to Buddhism. it would be great to take photographs without disturbing the devotees. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here if you are seeking full details of the artifacts. The shrine is a small part of this complex and worth a visit.

Korathota Raja Maha Viharaya is located Kaduwela Homagama bus route. The location is actualy between Kaduwela junction and Athurugiriya. According to the historical information provided over there, this temple was started in year 01 AD. This temple has two important historical inscriptions, which says this temple was offer to Maha Sanga by a daughter of Mahachula Mahatissa. Second one says one cave offered to Maha Sanga by a provincial leader call Sumana. King Walagamba also use this place as a hiding place before he chased away the South Indian invaders.

Mountains have always fascinated human imagination. And there we were gazing up at the wooded hill in front of us just a few minutes drive from the city of Colombo. This was the Ambulgama Raja Maha Viharaya. Vaguely we cold make out a series of lenas or where the natural rock curved protectively to make caves. Rock caves that had once sheltered meditating monks. Right on top of the mountain was a small white building topped with a dagoba shimmering in the sun. It was about 11.30 in the morning. Time- wise it was by far the worst to start climbing the wooded slopes, even though it was a short climb. The sun beat down fiercely on our bare heads. Yet something told us that the reward may outdo our hesitancy. Passing the viharaya, avasa-ge, and the bo-maluwa. which were situated at the bottom of the hill we started to climb up. Drenched with sweat we reached the first landing of flat ground. Under the hood of a sizable rock were three images. Two of which looked like ancient images of the Lord Buddha in the standing and recumbent postures. Only the weathered brick base of these images were remaining. The plaster had long since fallen apart. A seated Buddha image could be seen in the same line of images which seemed to be in the process of being built. A little aside yet on the same landing was the much more recent construction of a standing Buddha of immense height. Color washed in white the image the epitome of peace watched majestically over the lush Kelany valley that spread around it. A narrow path led upwards passing another lena where inside were the colourful depictions of the sath-sathiya. A little door led into the cave.
