The Blue House is a historic building located in Wan Chai, one of the oldest districts in Hong Kong. Built in the 1920s and 1930s, it is a four-storey shophouse that was once used as a tenement building for working-class families. Over the years, the building has undergone significant changes, including being painted blue in the 1990s to create a distinctive look. In recent years, the Blue House has become an important cultural landmark in Hong Kong, as a symbol of the city's heritage and a testament to the stories of past residents. In 2017, the Blue House was officially opened to the public as a community center and cultural hub, featuring a history museum, heritage gallery, community center, and artist-in-residence space. The revitalization project aimed to preserve the building's cultural significance while also providing a space for community activities and events. The Blue House retains many of its original architectural features, including a courtyard, balconies, and a rooftop terrace with a panoramic view of Wan Chai. Inside, the building has been transformed into a vibrant cultural center that celebrates Hong Kong's heritage and community. The history museum features interactive exhibits and multimedia displays that tell the story of the Blue House and its residents. The heritage gallery showcases the rich cultural traditions of the Wan Chai district, including food, crafts, and music. The community center provides a space for events and activities organized by local residents, such as workshops, cultural performances, and art exhibitions. The artist-in-residence program invites local artists to live and work in the building, creating a dynamic and diverse community of creatives who are dedicated to preserving Hong Kong's cultural heritage. The Blue House has become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, as a place to learn about Hong Kong's history, culture, and community. The center also offers guided tours and educational programs, making it an important resource for schools and organizations that are interested in preserving and promoting Hong Kong's unique cultural heritage. Overall, the Blue House is an essential part of Hong Kong's cultural landscape and a valuable community resource. Through its revitalization as a community center and cultural hub, it has become a symbol of the city's rich history and diverse culture, and a place where residents and visitors alike can come together to learn, create, and celebrate.

Blue House is a 4-storey balcony-type tenement block located at 72-74A Stone Nullah Lane, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. It is a lamdmark building named after the blue colour painted on its external walls. It is one of the few remaining examples of tong lau of the balcony type in Hong Kong and is a Grade I historic building. It was the original site of the first hospital 'Wah To Hospital' (aka "Wan Chai Kai Fong Hospital"), which was built in the 1870s in Wan Chai. The hospital provided Chinese medical services to local Chinese, was the first hospital in the district. After the hospital closed in 1886, the two-storey building was used as a temple for Wah To, the revered Chinese physician from the Three Kingdoms period. The building was later demolished in 1920 and was rebuilt into four four-storey tenement blocks in 1922. After the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in 1945, the building was used as a martial arts school and Dit Da clinic by Lam Cho, the adopted nephew of Lam Sai-wing. In 1970, the building was acquired by the government and in 1990 the outer walls were painted blue, thus earning it the name Blue House. It consists of three interconnected buildings: Blue House, Yellow House and Orange House. Both the Blue House and Yellow House have become something of a living museum. They are home to the ‘Hong Kong House of Stories‘, which hosts events and exhibitions that touch upon various aspects of Hong Kong’s history and development. The Orange House is primarily a residential building featuring 20 residential flats. Collectively, the colourful cluster of buildings is also home to a community service centre and two restaurants run by social enterprises.

The "Blue House" provide an exhibition space at ground floor and sometimes hosts community cultural activities, such as exhibitions, workshops, film screenings etc. Worth to take a look if you are walking around there.

(Translated by Google) It's a bit special, but because it's a private place, it can't go up. If you want to see the building structure, you can only watch the lawn between the blue house and the orange house. (The same "Hong Kong Story House" yap yap 哋) (Original) 係幾特別,但因為係私人地方,唔能夠上去,想睇建築結構就只可以係藍屋同橙屋之間嘅草坪睇。(同埋個「香港故事館」yap yap 哋)

The Hong Kong House of Stories (formerly known as the Wan Chai Livelihood Museum) is a heritage attraction on Stone Nullah Street in Wanchai district. It is part of the Wanchai Heritage Trail and open from 10am to 6pm daily (Closed on Wednesdays). This is a free attraction located in the Blue House, a four-storey Lingnan-style house built in the 1920s. The building is a distinctive blue colour with a mixture of Chinese and Western architectural features. It is an interesting historic property to see and take pictures. The ground floor of the Blue House is where you find the Hong Kong House of Stories which aims to promote local culture and heritage through activities and exhibitions for residents and visitors alike. In the ground floor exhibition space, you'll find 20th-century household items on display. These are nice to see if you only have a few minutes to spend at the Blue House when passing through Wanchai.

Blue House is always a place that I adore. There is a video to show you how upstairs look like. It is also interesting to see how they convert the space to commercial use but have kept some of the original decors. The backyard is lovely with loads of butterflies still at this time of the year and food here is gd.

Old building with access by wooden staircase only. Built more than 50 years ago or pre- 2nd World War. There is no sewage exhaust and such to be carry away by sanitary dept of government. The building and adjoining buildings are now rejuvenated and renovated.

Lingnan-style homes. The Blue House cluster is an interesting building to visit and learn about Hong Kong history. Tours run at selected hours and can be booked online. I recommend doing the tour to get the full background about the building. The staff inside were really helpful in explaining the history of the building.

I love to explore this neighborhood, blue house have small park behind and also cute shop with secondhand vintage stuff. And bring back my children memories to see all the antique that they preserve inside.

A beautiful building indeed but honestly not much to see. Perhaps I didn’t join the guided tours which are scheduled for 11am and 3pm. There is a cafe within the building which you can sip and eat. Surprisingly to me, upper floors are residential units.

Love the feeling of stepping back in time. Great collection of everyday items from back in the days. It’s so colourful looking down the street, buildings of all colours.

A colourful spot in Hong Kong where these low rise old building blocks refused to give way to modern skyscrapers. Many of those blocks are without lift so residents have to walk up and down the stairs everyday, a guaranteed way to keep fit. The location is commonly tagged as the Blue House which is in fact the blue building in the further background. It's famous for the white open balcony attached to each flat, a rare heritage that is disappearing fast in today's Hong Kong.

I happened to walk into Hong Kong House of Stories which is housed in this building and was invited to join a 1-hour walking tour of the Blue, Yellow and Orange Houses. A peaceful neighbourhood with a rich history of how Blue House was transformed from being a hospital to a martial art school and then to a grocery shop before becoming an award-winning monument it is now. All these transformations happened as early as 1922.

Interesting combination of this historical building and its current revitalized community. Convenient location at the core of commercial area, near wanchai station and other transports connecting not limited to Hong Kong Island area. Also hold events at regular basis, educating the public on the value of heritage conservation and bonding the neighboring area.

This place is a good example that show people how the society, environment and development live together. The local people who are used to live in wanchai raise the idea to reserve this historical building with reconstruction. Now this is not only a residential area but also a recreational rest area. There are some local exhibitions , shops and park inside the building.

An old iconic building from 1920s reburbished in 1997. Architecture tour was informative and interesting, exclusive access to the Blue House residence and display unit in original condition.

It's an antique! Situated right at the business and commercial area of Wanchai, however, subject to modern safety code of practice, externally mounted structural strengthening framework is fixed for enhancing safety, it doesn't affect the facade facing main street. There is a small museum displaying the daily living in 60's to 70's, worth a look.

I came here to just wonder from the local magazine online but when I arrived there during Mid-Autumn festival closed for public coz have special event so I can't enter just take picture from outside only and the neighborhood. The place is quite far from mtr station but you can ride by bus or minibus much easier.

Cultural heritage building in HK. There is a small 'museum' with a collection of historical artifacts and local items. Very interesting if you know what they are used for. If you have a local guide, it would be even more interesting!

A nice colourful revival of the old houses which are probably a hundred year old. Architectural design fully reflects the way houses were styled in the beginning of the last century. A reflection of how early residents lived in a simple natural way. The houses are still having residents who do not want to be disturbed. Visitors can only admire the places from outside, across the street, and take photos of the small buildings. They are in the middle of a busy crowded area, with shops, bars, cafes, bakeries, markets all around, making it a very easy and convenient place to visit.
