I am always hesitant when going to a new hairstylist, but was eager to find one here once I moved. I went in for a haircut prepared with pictures to show my stylist as well a very detailed description of what I wanted and it seemed to me like we were on the same page. The salon itself was very accommodating and clean. I attempted to make conversation with my stylist with no reciprocation at all. She maybe said a handful of words to me and after asking questions and getting 1-2 word responses, I gave up and kept quiet. Hair washing and scalp massage were great. My haircut ended up being at least two inches shorter than I had told (and showed) her. I told her I wanted face framing layers and the picture I showed her had soft wispy layers and face framing pieces but I left with big chunky side pieces that do not look to be blended at all and are uneven on either side. My layers look very choppy and unblended. I have a lot of hair, so softer edges look better but I was left with a very blunt haircut and minimal shaping. I feel as though the stylist disregarded everything I said and just got scissor happy. I hair tried styling my hair different ways, but have been clipping it back or wearing it in a ponytail because of how bad and chunky the front looks. Will not be returning.

I visited J Salon for a men's haircut and was met with an atmosphere where the stylists seemingly do not heed clients' requests. It appears they've mastered one particular style and are reluctant to stray from their comfort zone. They may assure you of their ability to accommodate your desired haircut, but the reality starkly contrasts this assurance. The end result often mirrors the standard cuts they are accustomed to, and any attempt from your end to guide or suggest modifications is met with defensive responses. When you try to voice your desired haircut, you are risking to receive very poor results. Rather than demonstrating a willingness to understand and consider your preferences, the stylists adopt a defensive stance. They shift the blame onto you, the client, insisting they executed exactly what was requested. The quality of the service is equal to a $10-$15 haircut on the mainland. So here you pay 7 times more for the Aloha experience and haircut which you wish you did not do.

My hairstylist Edona did a great job on color correction for my hair, she also suggested to style my hair in a natural curly way (usually I just get the blowouts). She was very personable and professional. If I lived in Hawaii I would always treat myself to J salon!

Came here after searching for a decent barber spot and when I came here back in 2021, had the BEST overall experience here. Although the place is called “Phil’s barber shop” the owner’s name is Joe and he’s an absolute delight! You have to book in advance cause he does have his time slots taken veryyyy quickly! I’ve always had great service, hair cut and style advice from Joe and I appreciate every one of his employees! Definitely heck this place out!

I am not sure if the stylist has experience to full thick hair, with tons of natural volume. I asked for the length of my hair to remain below my shoulder blade and end around back. However, she came reducing the length until i said if you cut any more I’ll end up with an Afro. The salon is nice, also in the middle of my service she went and needed to fix another clients hair. Not sure I’ll return. My hair is a lot shorter than i wanted.

One of the best experiences at a salon I’ve had. Went in not knowing what to expect, but my stylist took such good care of me. Beautiful salon and friendly staff. Will definitely be returning here routinely for my hair care. Highly recommend!

I go to Scarlette for my haircuts and she is AMAZING! She’s super nice and always does an incredible job. The salon is beautiful and clean. I’ve been to a few other salons in Honolulu before I settled on this one and my experience here was vastly better than the others. Definitely recommend.
