Yakitori Hachibei

Restaurant Yakitori restaurant

👍 Foods are tasty. So juicy and well seasoned. Beef tongue is a bomb. The pork and egg york are a great match. 1 Point off for being paying $70 per person and not feeling full at all. I don't eat much. Might be a good place for you to order just a few food and drink with your friends to kill time People often mention chicken, skewers, good, great, restaurant, skewer, Japanese, yakitori, Yakitori,

My family and I had an excellent meal here last weekend. Call ahead and make reservations as it filled up quickly. Parking- there is a paid parking lot up the street at the corner of Pauahi + Bishop. $4/ hour, we were in and out of the restaurant in less than 2 hours. We had our meal at 5pm and were promptly seated. Restaurant has a no mask, no entry policy, but once the food arrived, no issue with having masks off for remainder of meal. We ordered the butabara (pork belly), momo (chicken thigh), sukiyaki (beef with veggies), A5 wagyu, and a few other yakitori skewers. We enjoyed them all! We especially liked the sukiyaki skewer. It is served with a raw egg yolk and was really delicious! The Yakitori chef was working hard and can be seen front and center of the restaurant preparing yakitori with great effort. Thank you chef! The owner of the restaurant and our server were friendly and explained what dishes entailed. Having been to the Yakitori Hachibei in Hakata, Fukuoka as well, this was a wonderful meal that brought me back to my time in Japan. Definitely order the watercress salad and the corn karaage. Both were delicious! We also got the tebasaki wings with Hachibei sauce which was full of flavor.

I’ve been frequenting this restaurant for years. Consistently great, quality food. Superb Yakitori, Dassai 45 sake, excellent service. I recommend ordering the course, makes it easy (and the goods just keep on coming). This place feels like being in Tokyo.

I'm glad we were able to try this place out. When walking in there, you can already feel it's going to be good. We ordered a variety of items to share and everyone ended up satisfied. Everything that we ordered tasted great. Some of the standouts include the watercress salad, tsukune, sukiyaki, corn karaage, miso ribs and donburi. The skewers were cooked over a special wood in the counter area. I would come here again and may try to get a seat at the counter to see all the action.

Robert was excellent. He helped us book a reservation after I called even though open table said it was all booked. The overall dining experience was great the food came out right after another so they never got cold. If you can't decide what to get try the omakase and order extra skewers if you want more.

First of all, food, almost all meat skewers were overcooked except pork belly (which is hard to qualify that); the first bite of momo (chicken thighs) tasted good but then that’s it, it could be that the fire is usually not as hot in the tip of the skewer so only the first bite tasted just right but the remaining was overcooked. That’s just an example. Same overcooked issue happened to scallops, beef tongues, suikiyaki. Beef tongues are something taste so different if it’s overcooked, so I would say it was the worst among all ordered. Second, the prices, I don’t think these considered as reasonable pricing given the quality and completeness of the food and the services. No, I would not recommend this place.

Having lived most of my life in Japan I craved an authentic Japanese yakitori experience. And Hachibei delivers. It may take the average non Japanese to get used to this style of dining where there are no appetisers, mains, sides, etc. Basically, you order yakitori (grill) items off the menu, many of which are then cooked on the sumibi grill in the open counter by the chef. The items come one by one. Hachibei also has innovative Japanese inspired dishes like Shishito Peppers with Blue Cheese. The tebasaki chicken wings are the best I ever have outside Japan. Skip the spicy chicken wings, which are an upscale version of Buffalo Wild Wings and not really worthy of this menu. The Miyazaki A5 wagyu morsels are unbelievable tender and juicy. The excellent tsukune tastes best with the egg yoke, so don't forget!. The sake menu is extensive with all the usual sake brands available in America. No special imports. Same for shochu and a little disappointed no awamore or kokuto shochu. Great selection of Japanese whiskeys. Recommend seating indoors - our outdoor seat was disrupted by disturbed homeless that were roaming the sidewalks and made us nervous while loud music blasted out of the dive bar across the street. Not as expensive as I thought, about the same price including tips as Hachibei in Roppongi, Tokyo. Reservations a must, usually fully booked a couple weeks in advance.

We came in for dinner on a Tuesday night, my mom misunderstood the reservation queue and we ended up sitting outside. But honestly, it was a nice cool evening and the food and service more than made up for the noisy busses going around. As this is a yakitori restaurant you cannot come and not get the chicken thigh yakitori. It is simply amazing. The pork belly skewers with ponzu and negi was just as good as well. It's hard to go wrong with their menu. The big underdog was the grilled avocado which balanced out all the meat we had. Would definitely come back again.

Live there steam clam and the Yakitori chicken wing. So delicious. Pork belly was a bit hard to chew. Fried chicken wings were too salty. The chicken ramen was okay. There were not many non alcoholic drinks so we just had ice water. Overall very good vibe of izakaya. Reminds me of Japan a ton. Decent Yakitori and not bad the price. Would probably go again if I’m in Honolulu.

Consistently delicious! Easy to make rezzies through open table. Fun to sit at the counter and watch the chefs.

We ordered a variety of foods. In terms of value to price, I wasn’t much of a fan. The food was good, but a little bit pricey. Wait time was a little long also. At least we sat near the Yakitori grill master to watch him work his magic.

Let me start with the pros: the simple meat skewers that do not need any design are great, like pork belly, chicken thighs. They are juicy with a charcoal flavor. This is the end of pros though. Cons: Food quality is so-so: beef tongue is not fresh, has slight smell, and I spent years to chew it down. Even the pepper skewer, you can tell the pepper is not so fresh. Mushroom skewer is not Japanese Shiitake. It’s a kind of Asian shiitake that was dried and re-soaked before use and grilled. With this, I am surprised by how low a requirement this place set for itself. On top of the lack of food freshness, it’s the lack of taste. Anything that needs some design in flavor combination, there is no highlight. I taste only salt in Sukiyaki beef roll and Oyako Donburi. Service: the waiter started by seating us at the PERFECT location at the middle of the counter where you can enjoy a great facial with the smoke heated tin shields where the skewers are produced. With the restaurant 98% empty, we were told this is the only place left, as if we did not book 10 days in advance and only walked in and were lucky enough to even seat down. Following the perfect starter is the waiters checking on us two times when we are still reading the menu (one, ok, but two? ) This only reminds me of the rude message ‘we are fully booked. we are requesting all customers to please arrive on time’, no grace period. Your popularity does not put you superior to your customers. Now I don’t understand why this place is popular. With the food quality and service, it’s severely over-priced. The meat skewers here are ~$4.5, veg skewers ~$4. We come from a place where dining out is famous for cost inefficiency, and I can name a good Japanese skewer place whose meat skewer is ~$3.5 and veg ~$3. This restaurant offers normal level skewer taste while price approaches $$$$ in Oahu. There are so so many good Japanese places in Oahu if you want to spend your $ and feel it worths the value, not here. I came with high expectation given its popularity and price and left so disappointed.
