The astropeiler on the Stockert near Eschweiler was Germany's first radio telescope in 1956. The Astropeiler has been in the hands of an association since 1996. The members reprocessed the facility while preserving the historical structure. The access to the Astropeiler leads over a golf course. Very interesting tours are often offered. Here you will also find a nice team that brings you closer to radio astronomy and demonstrates the impressive parabolic antenna in action. Always worth a visit.

Wir hatten uns den Astropeiler Stockert auf dem Heimweg aus der Nordeifel angeschaut. Zwar hatten wir keine Führung gebucht, da er noch geschlossen war, aber alleine der Blick von außen war schon toll. Ich weiß nicht ob es Zufall war, aber als wir ankamen, wurde er neu ausgerichtet, das hat mir gut gefallen, so unmittelbar direkt davor zu stehen 👍😎

One of the best guided tours I've ever had. The people here are all volunteers who are passionate about what they do. We were lucky to get a guided tour just for us, and in English. Getting here is a bit of a walk if you're coming by bus, but they do have parking if you're coming by car. The tour itself is quite detailed and since it's only one tour or so every Sunday, you really get the time to interact with the people and get to know more about what they do and why they do it. It is a must if you are in the same field of research or related.

Radioteleskop

Die Anfahrt ist im positiven Sinne schon ein Abenteuer. Es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall ein Blick auf die Homepage des Astropeilers, wegen Anfahrt, Handy auf Flugmodus, etc. Lohnt sich auf jedenfall für einen kurzen Besuch.

Ein Fenster ins Universum: Dieses vollständig drehbare Radioteleskop macht Dinge sichtbar die weit jenseits unserer Vorstellungskraft existieren. Heute ist es ein Museum, in dem (noch) geforscht wird. Ich hatte das Glück einen der Radioastronomen zu treffen. Er hat gerne und ausführlich berichtet: Im Moment beobachten sie dort einen Magnetar. Aber auch das schwarze Loch im Zentrum unserer Galaxis wird observiert. Für eine Mitgliedschaft im Event Horizon (VLBT) Verbund fehlt leider die passende Atomuhr. Die verwendete Rhodium basierte Version geht nur 10000000000 (10^10) ms genau. Für das VLT braucht es eine auf 100000000000000 (10^13) ms genaue Atomuhr. Eine tolle Erfahrung.
