It's an old Kamihaga residence (19th century) and Japanese wax museum. The Japanese wax industry was very important for the development of Uchiko. The Kamihaga family became wealthy and influential through the success of their wax business in 19 century. It is the only residence in Japan preserving all of its wax-making facilities.

A stunning office building, residence and wax factory as well as a storehouse converted into a cage - all perfectly and tastefully restored even with reinforcement to comply with earthquake resistance regulation. So many great examples not only of the interesting wax making process & history, but also traditional Japanese carpentry and building design. It's also an interesting look back at how a wealthy family lived in a beautiful house built around a central garden. There are so few examples like this open to the public in Japan. The English information and signage is also pretty good. The staff are helpful & welcoming too.

I want people to know the goodness of Japanese candles. I had no idea that it was made from the nuts of a tree called Haze. It was a good museum that conveyed the skills of our predecessors and beautiful traditional Japanese crafts. In the same townscape, there were shops where you could buy Japanese candles and artists who made candlesticks, so it was a fun walk.

This is a merchant's mansion. Apparently, they made high-quality white wax and exported it to make a living. There are easy-to-understand exhibits that are educational, such as how to refine white wax from oak nuts. Apparently the white wax made here was highly praised at the Paris World's Fair. You can get in with the same ticket for all three facilities, so let's come here as well.

There is a museum where you can see the wax manufacturing process that made Uchiko prosper... To the mansion of a person who enjoyed wealth through wax The small garden is full of plum blossoms and it is cold because it is a tree house...

An impressive old residence and an traditional Edo Period factory where wax was made from the fruit of the haze tree (a relative of sumac). The guide described the whole history and process. Displays of the old machinery used to make the wax are intriguing.

Well, this is another piece of history. The Kamigahara family became rich by manufacturing wax during the early 20th century. You will find the old infrastructures that were used for manufacturing wax. The spacious house is another symbol of the money they amassed from wax business. Nothing big, but as there are not much to see here, so drop by there to spend some time learning the local history.

It is a facility where you can listen to detailed explanations, and there are many exhibits, allowing you to understand the origins of the town of Uchiko. I was surprised that the oak tree, where wild birds gather, had such power. I visited on a hot day by motorbike, so the air conditioning in the museum was a great relief.

When I was a kid, my parents told me not to touch the poison ivy tree because it loses my skin and gives off heat, but I didn't know that I could make candles from it. (Translated by Google) At that time, you can see the mansion and factory that made a fortune in the wax business! There are 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors, and on the 3rd floor you can see the beautiful beams as they were at that time. Everything is very beautiful and valuable, such as storage and openwork of the room dividers. The museum on the premises is also very nice. In the building that became the factory, equipment is introduced for each process of extracting wax. I went there on Wednesday on weekdays, but on Wednesday I was able to see it slowly, probably because the soba restaurants around me were on holiday. Maybe Uchiko is free on Wednesday? However, I can't eat soba ... Those who like history and industry are worth a look.

(Translated by Google) Kamihaga Residence is an old folk house located in Uchiko, Uchiko-cho, Kita-gun, Ehime Prefecture. It is designated as an important cultural property. Among the waxes in Uchiko Town, which prevailed at the Paris Expo in the Meiji era, it was said to have been highly evaluated in terms of quality. I walked around Nagahama town on that day. From there, I drove into Uchiko Town, parked at the parking lot, and walked to Kamihaga Residence. First, pay the admission fee at the entrance. It was 900 yen including the admission fee for here, Uchiko-za, and the Museum of Commerce and Living. First of all, the person in charge explained about Japan wax. It was used not only for candles, but also for cosmetics and for polishing bread. Take a look around the horribly large mansion. Toilet at the end of the corridor. Goemon bath in the bathroom. Take a short break while looking at the garden in a detached room. Go up the stairs. There is no ceiling board on the 2nd floor so that the beams can be seen well. Further to the 3rd floor. Two large black pillars have penetrated so far. Go outside and head to the Mokuroushi Ryokan. The air conditioner is working and it seems to come back to life. I studied about Japan wax production. It was impressive that he had been focusing on branding to protect the high quality from that time. Go out again. I got cold barley tea, thanked me and went out. It's a wonderful building. If Wolong Sanso is a luxurious building, Kamihaga Residence is a mansion dedicated to business. However, it seems that the husband did not live here and was used exclusively for visitors. If you come to Uchiko, this is a must-see.
