The hike to the top will test your physique. But not that bad, wear some good shoes and carry your water bottles. Great place to enjoy the morning sunrise.

Popular sunrise/sunset spot. The trail to the top goes through carved out steps and big boulders. The last part of the trail feels risky and too steep and should be done by those who feel confident and safe. It will be difficult to get down after dark, so carry a flashlight/head lamp if trekking in the dark to be cautious. Avoid in rainy weather as granite rocks will be very slippery and unsafe. The panoramic view from the top is absolutely worth the adventure. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get up in daylight, and trail has white arrows to guide you till the top.

Mathanga Hill in Hampi, Karnataka, is an absolute must-visit for those seeking an exhilarating trek that rewards with breathtaking panoramic views and an intimate connection with the historical and natural wonders of the region. The journey to the summit begins with a moderately challenging hike, which winds through the striking rocky terrain that surrounds Hampi. As you ascend, you'll discover ancient temples and ruins nestled amidst the boulders, offering an intriguing glimpse into the past and the architectural marvels of the Vijayanagara Empire. Reaching the pinnacle of Mathanga Hill is a rewarding experience in itself, but the real magic happens when you take in the view. The sweeping vista of Hampi's iconic landscape, with its majestic boulders, lush paddy fields, and the Tungabhadra River meandering through the scenery, is awe-inspiring. It's the perfect vantage point to appreciate the magnificence of the region's unique topography. The sunrise and sunset views from Mathanga Hill are particularly captivating, as the sun's golden rays paint the landscape with an ethereal glow. It's an experience that leaves an indelible mark on your memory and photography enthusiasts in awe of the dramatic vistas. In conclusion, a trek to Mathanga Hill is a well-rounded adventure that combines history, nature, and awe-inspiring vistas. It's a chance to connect with the ancient heritage and natural beauty of Hampi while embracing a bit of exploration and physical activity. For those seeking an immersive and unforgettable experience in this iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mathanga Hill is a top choice.

Thrilling, dangerous and better well prepared yourself before you start climbing. Most of them know only 2 routes but there is one more route which has good steps but no proper entry exit from/to the main road. This hill probably tallest around Hampi, you get awesome view around the hill. Please dont go alone with family because you can expect wild animals and easily you can lost since there is no proper instructions or sign boards on the way and top of the hill.

This is one of the must visit hills in hampi. Had a nice easy climb up the hill which took us around 15-20 mins. The view was amazing and the sunset was also mesmerizing. Better to climb down soon after sunset as it gets hard when it's dark.

It was a lovely time for us to visit. We set out at like five in the morning so it was pretty dark when we were climbing up the hill. The view was awesome which gave us a bird's eye perspective of the whole of hampi. Unfortunately, the sky was too cloudy to witness the sunrise.

Matanga Hill in Hampi, Karnataka, offers a panoramic view of the stunning landscapes and the ancient ruins of Hampi. Climbing to the top of Matanga Hill, especially during sunrise or sunset, provides a breathtaking experience. The view includes the Tungabhadra River, the Virupaksha Temple, and the vast expanse of the Hampi ruins. The ascent to Matanga Hill involves a bit of a trek, but the effort is rewarded with a spectacular vista. It's a popular spot for both tourists and locals seeking a picturesque perspective of the historical and architectural wonders that define Hampi. If you enjoy scenic views and historical settings, Matanga Hill is a must-visit in Hampi.

Best place for sunrise. Go as early as possible to avoid the crowd while climbing up and to get a front seat on the peak! :) Some great views of the areas around. Climb has many high rocks, shoes recommended. Lots of monkeys on the hill top, keep your belongings safe.

The sunsets here are spectacular. Get your car parked at the far end of hampi bazaar. Half a mile of uphill walking is required before you reach the breathtaking panorama and ruins of the ancient city below. Matanga Hill is a popular destination because it is the highest point in Hampi. The path is moderately difficult, with stone pavement. Some spots are slippery, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. Keep your food and belongings hidden; monkeys frequent the area. Take in the scenery with your own two eyes, because no camera can do it justice.

Located at the centre of hampi, which is the highest point in the area and offers breathtaking views of the ruins. Also, Matanga Hill is one of the important locations mentioned in the Hindu mythology, Ramayana. Morning before 9 AM and evening after 4 PM will be the best time to view.

This hill top is the place to be, to view the sunrise falling on the Virupakshi Temple. The Trek is not too tough even though it's steep. We went as a group and had a lovely time. Coffee sellers are there at the top too.

Must visit , give you a bird's eye view of the temple and ruins. Reach early as it gets crowded . Moderate trek up Sunrise and Sunset is brilliant

  • 4/5 Akshay g. 2 years ago on Google
Beginner level trek with mesmerizing views on the top. There's also a temple over there. Evening trekking was prohibited when we were there because of hibernation of a bear that time. Virupaksha temple can be seen with many other structures from the top. This is must visit place to see sunset or sunrise. Hampi is so beautiful and silent that it seems no one talks here.

Steps then rock you have to walk. After tiring day it's not easy. Specially for females. Though it will take around less than 30min to reach on top. But once you reach there sunset is beautiful. You can see glimpse of hampi. Temple river Village

We started our journey to matanga hills at 4:45 in the morning from our guest house near to Virupaksha temple. We were able to reach the hilltop by 5:30am by taking short breaks after every couple of mins. There are 2 routes to matanga hills and I believe we had taken the risky one. From the challenging ascent to the awe-inspiring sunrise witnessed from the hilltop, every moment spent on this adventure was nothing short of magical. The rugged terrain, scattered ruins, and the mighty Tungabhadra River winding through the valley was a treat for our eyes. For anyone visiting Hampi, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on the climb to Matanga Hills. Be prepared for a rewarding trek, surrounded by magnificent scenery and crowned by a sunrise that will leave an indelible mark on your soul. It is an experience that captures the essence of Hampi's enchantment, combining history, nature, and spirituality in an unforgettable journey.

Matanga Hill is located on the southern edge of Hampi close to the Monolithic Nandi structure. Climbing to the top is not an easy task since there are no clear steps for the visitors. We climbed in the early morning and took around 30 minute to reach the top. The priest of the temple was also with us who guided our treacherous climb in the dark. Reached the top around 6am and there were already a sizable crowd at the top. The views from the top are simply breathtaking and watching sunrise is a divine experience. The small but beautiful shrine located on the Mathanga Hill offers additional positive energy to the visitors. Sage Mathanga is believed to have resided in this Hill. Sage Mathanga prayed to Lord Shiva for a child through Urga Thapassu and Lord Shiva appeared. Sage requested the Lord Shiva to bless him with a beautiful girl like Parvati. Lord Shiva agreed and blessed the Sage. Later Lord Shiva incarcerated himself as Kinnareshwara at Mathanga Hill and got married to Parvati. A must visit place and worth the trouble in climbing the Hill.

One of the best Sunrise 🌅 point in Hampi. Climbing is difficult at some places so be careful. The view at top is very beautiful which satisfy your all added efforts to reach at top. Shri Veerbhadreshwara temple 🛕 at top is also must visit if you are there.

Highest Point in Hampi, You can get the magnificent view of the entire town of Hampi. Great spot for sunset and an even better spot for Sunrise. There are 3 trails to get to the peak, South side being the easiest of the three. You can get the view of Virupaksha Temple and the Achyutharaya Temple complex from a height which is sight to behold

It is totally worth climbing this hill. We climbed it in 30 mins, it is not very high but the climb might be scary to few people. There are two paths to climb this hill; one path is from the hanuman temple and one path is from the back side. There is also a small river in the back side of the hill and it is worth taking a dip there too. You can get a very good view of Achyutaraya temple and Virupaksha temple from there.

If you are planning to visit Hampi then you should definitely explore this place . It takes less 20 minutes to climb and it's very easy but be careful if you are visiting in monsoon . It will give a scenic view of HAMPI and Thungbhadhra rivers that look so attractive and beautiful. Also this river makes the city look so soothing along with that sunset looks so gorgeous from top. Also Sree Virupaksha Temple looks beautiful from the top. A nice place to chill !

It's good place for sunset views. Also being the highest point u get to see all the temple and monuments from above. It can be accessed by 2,3 ways. For initial rise there are steps, later u have to pass through rocks. It's a difficult way. Good footwear is must.

Amazing location to watch sunrise specifically. Take right at the vehicle parking area, which is a little before the Hampi viroopaksha temple road. Ride all the way till the end. Look for the matanga hill board. It takes around 20 minutes to reach the top. Half the way is made of steps and is a bit steep. Rest rocky path. It's slippery at places. Wear proper footwear. Avoid flipflops. Carry a bottle of water, torch as we usually ascend way ahead of sunrise. Can plan your starting time by checking the sunrise time a day before. It could be crowded on weekends and long holidays. If you want a good vantage point, go early. If mantapa view point is occupied, look at the right side of the mantapa. That's also a nice view point. It was a calm place before. Now they have put speakers and play devotional songs. I felt it was unnecessary. On the way back, there is a path that leads towards achyutanarayana temple side. Visit that for sure. Parking - Free Entry - Free Difficulty level - Easy Carry - Torch, Water, Shop/Slipper with good grip

We had an amazing experience of climbing as well as enjoying the mesmerizing view from top of matanga hill. Visited on 23rd Jan Monday 2023. No rush , since it was a weekday. Steps are little tricky, so be careful. It takes only half an hour to reach the top. But beware of monkeys, don't keep any edibles in your hands. There is a small temple on the top.

Witnessed one of the best sunsets from the top of Mathanga hill. A small Shiva temple is there at the top. We can get an amazing 360* view of hampi and most of the monuments and the paddy and banana fields. 😃 Main start point of trek is from the end of parking ground near Virupaksha temple. Those who are used to hiking , can climb to the top within 15-20 minutes , for others it would take upto 30-40 minutes depending on the fitness level.

Matanga Parvata Matanga Parvata is a small hill situated near Eduru Basavanna and at a distance of about a kilometer from Virupaksha temple where the sage Matanga is said to have resided. According to the tradition and belief that sage Matanga for begetting a child prayed Lord Shiva through deep meditation (ugra tapassu) and Shiva appeared before him. Sage Matanga requested for a child but Shiva told the sage that he will bless him with an ignorant and unintelligent boy, but the sage declined the same and requested the Lord to bless him with a beautiful girl having the qualities of Parvati and should get married with her. Shiva agreed and blessed the sage and later Shiva incarnated himself as Kinnareshwara at this place as Kinnareshwara and got married to Parvati. Its a best place aroud to vitness sunrise and sunset in hampi

Great view from above. Then climb down to the temple. Don't forget to click photos to show how impressively big the bolders are! Hill, temple and river around it take about 2 hours to complete. Nice walk down the main lane towards the hill. You'll also find the local police station and traffic police at the bottom of the hill. Autos are available for those who don't want to walk.

For the best sunrise experience at Matanga Hill, arrive as early as possible to avoid crowds and secure a prime spot at the peak. The climb offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area, but sturdy shoes are recommended due to rocky terrain. Be mindful of the resident monkeys and keep your belongings secure during your visit.

This hill has 20 mins of trek to reach the top spot and the view is really mesmerising. The breeze on top is to good and witnessing the sunset.

From top you'll get a panoramic view of hampi area around virupakasha temple. Suited only for sunrise or sunset. The slopes are stone paved, but a bit slippery. The last stretch of climb is dangerous and if you are not confident don't try the last climb

  • 5/5 saidavali d. 2 months ago on Google • 1 review New
This trekking is amazing. It takes hardly 25-35 min to reach destination. A bit risk of last 1/4 hill, be cautious while climbing and you encounter a decent no.of monkeys along the way. The view at the top is worth the climbing. You can witness the amazing 360degrees view of hampi town. Make sure to come down before light fails.
