日本にあまたある牡丹園のほとんどは数だけ集めた鉢植か大きな花壇に過ぎませんが、ここは丁寧に整えられた庭園であり、景観としての魅力にあふれています。主役となる牡丹の艶やかさもさることながら、牡丹のまわりを彩る石楠花の美しさもまた格別です。芝桜に八重桜、藤、チューリップのあたりは脇役に徹して文字通り花をそえています。そして花々の咲き誇る舞台としての庭園がまたよくできています。園内を外界と隔て、ほどよい変化をもたらし、花のある風景を演出しています。庭園としても一級品であり、牡丹園としては唯一の国指定名勝であるのもうなずけます。
元は薬草園であったここを現在の規模にまで拡張したのは、三代目園主の柳沼源太郎です。父から牡丹園の運営を引き継いだ源太郎は心から牡丹を愛していて、商家の長男でありながら牡丹栽培のために東京農科大学(現・東京大学農学部)に進学したほどです。このこだわりあってこそのこの見ごたえなのだと実感します。園内には源太郎の功績を顕彰する銅像があります。
園内にある二対の石造彫刻は、白河を中心に多くの作品を残す石工の小松寅吉によるものです。一対は天宇受売命と鶏、もう一対は寅吉がもっとも得意とした阿吽の狛犬です。いずれも精緻かつ躍動的で愛嬌もある秀作ですが、、天宇受売命と鶏はともかく、狛犬の方は凡百のわりとどうでもいい石碑の添えものがごときあつかいで、何とも残念な限りです。
狛犬の配置だけは改善が望まれるものの、他はもう称賛の言葉しかなく、評価は★五つです。
