Have you heard about the yellow city in Mexico, Izamal? 💛 The entire city is painted in yellow and the remarkable thing is that there is no clear explanation for these yellow colors! Izamal used to be a spiritual center for the Maya, with different temples to honor important gods. When the Spanish conquered Izamal, they destroyed the temples and used the stones to build their own cloisters and churches. Nowadays, one of the most famous buildings in Izamal is the convent of San Antonio de Padua, the first cloister built on the Yucatan peninsula. Because of its religious history, Izamal has always been an important city of pilgrimage.

This is a small, attractive, park with many places to sit. There is not much shade here so this is better to visit in the early morning, late afternoon , or evening. There are a number of information plaques which are interesting to read ... and of course the 3 cannons!

Historical landmark
👍 Located two blocks away from the convent, it is one of the largest pyramids built by the Maya. The access is free, though the entrance is a bit hidden between two buildings. The pyramid is only partially restored so if you're expecting Teotihuacan-style edifice, you might be disappointed.

Convento de San Antonio
Catholic church
👍 Be aware the church is only open on Sundays. It’s worth a walk through the courtyard and taking some photos. But the real attraction is walking the side streets until you find the perfect cobblestone street with all yellow walls. If you have time, try walking around the back of the church to see the...
