Delft island overall was a wonderful experience but waiting for the ferries and the unnecessarily high priced rides around the island from three wheelers and Cabs were kinda frustrating. You must visit here which is like a whole new place and climate and geographical characteristics.

It is an impressive place to visit in Delft island and strongly recommended to visit. It had been a dungeon built by Portuguese and later it was re built by Dutch as a fort with two bastions . You can go inside the ancient building and walk through the hundreds of years old walls. You will be able to climb up to the second floor of the building

Originally built by the Portuguese and later taken over by the Dutch during their invasion. The structure seems to be constructed using the coral rocks found on the island. The building is claimed to be a 2 story structure during its day. Currently only the walls are remaining. Some irresponsible people have destroyed the walls by engraving their names. Authorities should look into this and conserve these sites for the future.

The Dutch fort was built by the Portuguese but later was taken over by Dutch during their ruling. The Dutch also added a barrack to this Fort. The locals claims that the Fort was built by King Meekaman, who was a king from the fisherman caste. The fort is built using limestones and bricks. Currently we can find only the ruins but based on the remains it's believed that the Fort may have had 2 or 3 floors was strongly fortified.

Top in the Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. There is a dry climate. Overall, the Tamil population is high. An area rich in seafood. This is the only place in Sri Lanka where you can see wild horses living in free.

Delft Dutch Fort has been originally constructed by Portuguese and later captivated by the Dutch. The Dutch has later improved and strengthened the fort. The main building is two-storeys high. To reach the fortress, you have to walk by the side of the Delft Hospital.

Old Dutch fort built during the Dutch era. The fort is in ruins and mainly built from the most abundant building material on the island dead corals. Nothinguch has done to preserve what is left.

This fort is built by Portuguese and then later on captured by Dutch who have renovated the place and strengthen it. Though it is in ruins now it still shows the majestic ness. You can walk inside and around to have a better insight.

Old dutch fort built in the 18th century. The now ruined walls are mainly built from limestone and dead corals. Not much of a preservation going on here due to the remote location of the island from the mainland.

The Dutch Fort on Delft Island (Neduntheevu) is a fascinating historical site that takes visitors on a journey back in time. Nestled on this remote island off the coast of Sri Lanka, the Dutch Fort stands as a testament to the island's colonial past, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of maritime trade and strategic importance. Historical Significance: Built during the colonial period, the Dutch Fort served as a stronghold for the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century. As you explore the fort's remnants, you'll find remnants of the past, giving you a sense of the rich history that unfolded within these walls. Architectural Marvel: The architecture of the Dutch Fort is a remarkable blend of European and Asian influences. The solid stone walls, once fortified to protect the garrison, stand tall against the ravages of time. While parts of the fort have succumbed to the elements, the remaining structures exude a distinct charm, and their construction techniques reflect the craftsmanship of the era. Panoramic Views: From the elevated vantage points within the fort, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the island's coastline and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. The sight of the endless ocean stretching into the horizon is a humbling reminder of the island's maritime importance during its heyday. The weathered walls and ancient structures create a perfect backdrop for artistic compositions, especially during the golden hour when the setting sun casts a warm glow over the fort's stones. Tranquility and Serenity: One of the most appealing aspects of the Dutch Fort is its peaceful ambiance. Unlike more popular tourist destinations, Delft Island remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. As a result, visiting the Dutch Fort provides a serene and meditative experience, allowing visitors to connect with history and nature in a tranquil setting. Preservation Efforts: It is heartening to note that efforts are being made to preserve and restore the Dutch Fort to ensure that future generations can continue to appreciate its historical significance. While some sections have been lovingly restored, there's still room for further preservation work to retain its authenticity. Accessibility and Travel Tips: Delft Island is accessible via boat from the mainland of Sri Lanka. However, the availability of transportation might vary, so it's essential to plan the trip accordingly. It's advisable to wear comfortable footwear as the terrain around the fort can be uneven. Conclusion: A visit to the Dutch Fort on Delft Island is a captivating journey into the island's colonial past. History buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape will find delight in exploring the remnants of this historical gem. While the fort's condition reflects the passage of time, its enduring charm and the surrounding natural beauty make it a unique destination that promises a memorable and enriching experience.
