We rushed to get seats as this place is know for its big lines. Fortunately, there was no line as we got there a bit early. The owner, thankfully is serious about hygiene and requires that we sanitize our hands and wear a mask. The seats are also generously spaced, with condiments, chopsticks, and sanitizer spaced evenly on the counter. Each dish is made to order so the tempura is ultra fresh and hot. The noodles we had in mid-winter were delicious udon noodles kept warm hot water with a with a fantastically fragrant dipping soup. Topping made the dipping soup change the tone from savory to spicy and sweet. Just wonderful. The proprietor was equally charming as he gave us several ideas to add to our itinerary. We love Kyoto but nothing is better than local knowledge. I highly recommend this place for locals or anyone visiting

Amazing udon noodles cooked fresh right in front of you. The owner/chef was the most welcoming person, giving us suggestions for our entire trip to Japan even beyond Kyoto. Highly recommend both the food and the conversation. We got options 2 and 3, menu is tempura and udon (hot or cold).

This place only has two options: tendon (tempura seafood and vegetables on rice), or tendon + daily soup. It appears they used to have udon made on site too, but the owner is scaling back a bit. He only does one thing, but he does it very well. I’m not even much of a tendon fan (my wife is the tendon nut), but I became one after eating here. Also, as other reviewers say, the owner is a great guy. He can tell you a lot about the area, and he’s really interested in where you’re from. We spoke Japanese and he took notes on our ideas about Mie prefecture (my home for 20+ years). Other reviewers say he speaks pretty good English. That may be true but he was very patient with my middling Japanese and that’s a big plus in my book!

Excellent Tempura. The Shrimp quality was superb. First time trying egg tempura. Is just crazy good. And all with scallop included. Just for 1300 yen. Incredible value! The place is extremely clean and the guy that prepares the food is super nice. Also very foreign friendly. Must try

The food here was so amazing! I've never heard of matcha salt but it paired perfectly with the tempura. The owner was also super friendly and very helpful if you are a traveler. Would highly recommend for anyone to go here.

The tendon here is amazing! Best tendon I’ve ever eaten, the batter was so light and ingredients were really fresh. The owner was also so friendly and warm and spoke to us in English. Gave us many recommendations for what to do as well.

Outstanding artisanal udon with a blend of whole wheat and white flours. Go when they open for lunch to avoid lines. Watch your noodles be pressed and cut to order!

The best dining experence during my trip to Kyoto, the tempera is expertly crafted, thin crunchy coating and dripping inside. Also the udon has an unique taste to it, with its price tag it is just unbeatable. Also the owner speak fluent English, friendly and willing to chat if you would like to.

We were in the area and were craving udon. Did a quick Google search and ended up here. So glad we did! We arrived right when it opened and there was no line. Lucky us. The owner is very friendly and speaks great English. We learned that he's a one man show--he makes the udon, cooks, and serves the food. Everything was delicious. It was fun chatting with him and learning more about Kyoto through his eyes. He even gave us a map and circled all the places he recommended! If we had more time in Kyoto we would definitely have come back. P.S. it is cash only

Loved the food! The proprietor is a good host as well as a good chef! The prices are very good considering the quality! Helped us to find the private house we rented near his restaurant; that’s rare in Europe but Japanese people are so nice! Go check this out!!!

The menu is now Tendon (Tempura Donburi) instead of udon noodles, but the food was delicious, and the chef, Tatsuo, was gracious in providing tourism recommendations in English.
