Had a great time relaxing at Tenzan onsen. We opted to walk it as recommended by another reviewer and it was more of a 30-35min walk. Do note that the walk is uphill for most of the time. Bring your own towels if you don’t want to pay for it. There are ticket machines before you enter the facility. No more than groups of 6 - I think cause they don’t want you to be talking the whole time and relax for everyone. We came during weekday morning and it was not busy. Gf has tattoos and wasn’t an issue since I don’t have any. I think they don’t want multiple people with tattoos hanging out even if you’re foreigners. Lots of lockers and baths to use as per your preference on temperature and a great lounge area on the first floor right side. It’s kind of hidden but that’s where everyone goes to nap. I played switch and napped for a while. It was a nice relaxing time compared to the hustle bustle of regular tourist adventures. Restaurant food was also great and just overall a great time in a great little city. One of the highlights of our trip.

Very nice and relaxing place. I enjoyed walking there even in 30+ degrees Celsius. Inside the male area, there are several baths with different temperatures. One around 40°C, then 3 others around 36°C, and a cold one, which is really nice, especially in the summertime.

This is an inexpensive and inclusive Onsen. Tattoos are welcome, but the onsen has signs posted saying not to come in groups if you have tattoos. We didn't experience any restrictions though. Don't miss the napping room by the river! Peaceful, and with free blankets. I had a lovely 30 minute massage (they offer 20, 40, and 60 minute sessions, and you can add 10 minutes to any session). Around ¥100 per minute. You can rent a kimono for ¥500 (+ ¥500 deposit, refunded when you give back the kimono). Everything is cash only. EDIT: Liked it so much, that we rearranged our vacation schedule to fit in another trip to Hakone (from Tokyo), just to spend more time at this Onsen! This time, one of the other patrons was very insistent that 2-or-more tattooed people may not come in together. But none of the staff or anyone else said anything. We had more massages. Notes: The massage is performed while you are fully-clothed; just take off bulky jackets, etc. The massage room is communal: there are usually 2 or 3 other people getting massages at the same time. You can select from whole-body massage, foot massage, hand massage, back massage, each in various durations. There is a coffee/tea/ice cream bar near the entrance/exit; particularly great if you want something while the restaurant is closed.

Awesome onsen with 4 hot springs and 1 cold dip. Take the K bus from Hakone Yumoto and it will drop you off directly. Just walk down the slope and the last bus is 8:47pm. Purchase the tickets at the vending machines. Hakone free passes get 50Yen off per ticket. The onsen is on the left, and upon entering, leave your shoes at the lockers on the right, go to counter and show them your tickets. Get your own small towel and if not you may purchase from them. Once all is good, go down the stairs and turn right for male onsen and left for female onsen. Take a shower before you dip into the onsen. Start from the mild temperature before you move on to the hotter ones. There is a restaurant at 2nd level. Check it out for shabu shabu, noodles. I like the round sesame red bean paste desert. It was so yummy.

Very traditional onsen, the pools are very carefully designed with multiple pool with difference of temperature and even one cold. The onsen open on the forest with trees hanging on the pools. It include a good souvenir shops and room to rest with tatami floor in a traditional wooden architecture style. The restaurant is also very good. It was actually my best restaurant in japan so far. a 25m walking from the city to arrive is pleasant along the river. Close at 11pm so you have wealth of time to enjoy and get rest !

Very nice traditional onzen, with several baths of different temperatures, including a cold pool and a sauna. Tattoos are accepted! But bear in mind that multiple tattooed people in one group might not be greeted enthusiastically, even if it’s a mixed group. This happened with my partner and myself, but fortunately the hosts were fine with both of us having tattoos as long as they were covered in the main common areas. The shop and restaurant on site are also worth checking out!

THE BEST ONSEN IN JAPAN I HAVE EVER TRIED!!!! I've tried all kind of onsen, hot spring, sento and I have to admit that this place amazed me! The staff here were super nice, helpful, respectful, and lovely. They also have many types of baths (they have cold bath which I LOVE!), the water was so clean. The area for relaxing was also amazing. There late bus to go back to town so don't worry too much if you missed the bus. However, they don't rent towels, so you will have to buy 200yen for small one and 250yen for big one. I will definitely come back

Truly an amazing and dare I say, life-changing experience. The facility is beautiful, the onsen includes 7 different onsen "pools" and one is a cold plunge. There is also a steam room and sauna you can enjoy located where the springs are. There's a little shop inside the facility if you want souvenirs. There's also an English friendly cafe as well. I got a chocolate tart with iced coffee along with a small sesame ice cream. Everything was delicious and I love that they serve the iced coffee in a frosted mug. I spent 4 hours at this place because I just didn't want to leave. There's even a napping area to sleep after feeling so relaxed, as well as a reading room that has books to choose from. You can also book a massage which I wish I did but I'll have to look into for the next time I visit. This place is tattoo friendly as long as you're a lone traveler. They encourge enjoying the onsen regardless of if you're tattooed. I'm heavily tattooed and they had no issues with me (I was by myself). If you come in a group that's all covered in tattoos, you will get turned away. Bring your own towels or you can buy some here. They only allow small towels at the onsen. Make sure you do your research on onsen etiquette before you come so you don't look like a silly gaijin.

My best Onsen exprience in 4 weeks in Japan (best out of 5). Just the building in itself is very nice and there is a few relaxing spot you can chill after the Onsen. The whole set up is outside and its enormous compare to other places, which is a hugeeee plus. There is one extremely hot, 2 hot, two lukeworm cascading and one cold. Pretty sure they are all natural except for one. I tell you, it's totaly worth the 1450y. I spent more than two hours there and I've never been more relaxed in my life. There is a little restaurant insane, so you can get food and drinks with a very nice view. Side note : I recommand going by foot (about 25min from the Hakone-Yumoto) as the trail is beautiful. But you can also take the bus for like 250yish.

One of the best and simple way to enjoy Onsen near Tokyo. Just 22min of bus ( we walked about 30min because we didn't want to wait for the bus) from the Hakone station. So it's really close. The outdoor baths are awesome and chill. I really liked my experience. I feel refresh. It's a tattoos friendly onsen ! If you want to know. And you can only paid by cash !

Worth the trip to Hakone from Tokyo. Easy enough to figure out bus system. I have tattoos, so one that’s friendly to that was a necessity for me. As for the onsen / it was so relaxing and wonderful. I was a bit hesitant being an American in the Japanese bathing culture, but found it all so much simpler and comfortable than I expected. After the baths I rested (and napped!) overlooking the woods and it was magic.

Had such a fun experience at this onsen. I highly recommend making the 30 min trek on foot because the views don’t disappoint. I had a wonderful time here & it is tattoo friendly.

The bus drops you off outside the gateway, and you go down the hill to get to the onsen parking lot. The small building to the left has a few machines that sell tickets for the onsen(see the 4th picture). You can choose the option for a freepass holder if you have a freepass, which is a dollar off. You climb up the stairs from there to get to the onsen front door. You take off your shoes, put it in locker, and give the counter people your tickets. Don't listen to what they say about the last bus being 8:20pm, it's 8:48pm just as Google said and what's written at the bus stop. Maybe they are trying to make sure you don't miss the last bus, but I waited 38min for the bus. It's a little confusing inside, but you walk past the suverniour shop, you see a resting area, and you go down the stairs for the changing rooms and hotspring. If you go out the door from the resting area, it's a connecting bridge to another building. That building has the private onsen, and if you go down the stairs near the door in that building, it is the napping area facing the river. The onsen is very nice. It's my first traditional onsen experience bathing outdoor sitting on rocks in the hotspring. It's very crowded though, even if it's a Wednesday.

The onsen is located in Hakone city which is a very beautiful city and you can see mount Fuji from different spots while driving. I loved the experience. The environment was so calming and they have different pools to try. We tried their cafe after the hot spring and the coffee and pastries were great too.

Just had my first ever onsen experience here and what can I say. It has been. the highlight of my trip. I was a bit apprehensive at first but then once you enter you just feel free and all inhibitions are gone. the onsen in the midst of a forest with towering ancient forest trees over you just makes this experience exhilarating. The different temperature of the various pools and the sauna just made me into a new person. The waters come from the natural hot springs dotting the area. After the baths you can just relax looking at a forest on a hill surrounded by the sound of flowing water .... HEAVEN Definitely visit this place if you are in the Hakone area.

A wonderful place to relax and wind down. They are very strict with who and how many they allow in. This is good. Don't go here if you are looking for a swim or splashing around. It is for quiet contemplation and low voice conversation if the situation permits. It is possible to walk to and from the nearest town but streets are narrow and very steep. Remember to bring a towel. They can be bought at the front desk at reasonable prices though. It is clean, nice and a wonderful place to visit.

Amazing experience. I was nervous since my husband and I both have tattoos and I didn’t want to spend a whole travel day getting there if we wouldn’t be let in. It was 100% worth the trip. We walked the 30 minutes from the train station. There were some steep inclines but it was fine after sitting for 80 minutes. When you get to Tenzen, there is a vending machine for you to get your tickets. Get those, go inside and be prepared to take your shoes off right away. you store them in a locker and they give you instructions for the onsen. we had to buy small towels and large ones werent allowed. Everyone is seperated by gender. Tatoos were no issue. it took a second to get used to the no clothes thing but was very relaxing. Restataunt was amazing after the soak.

I enjoyed my first Onsen experience here. I have a full sleeve arms and one leg tattoo and they are okay with it. I can highly recommend this Onsen place when you visit Hakone. They have a discounted price as well if you buy the Hakone free pass.

I went on a chilly night this November and man...this place was gorgeous. My friends and I had a lovely bath, good food and nice memories. I can't wait to go back when it's even colder outside.
