Some say time is the testament of quality. It has been a year since I visited Sugarhill Kyoto. Thinking back, what do I think about it now? I miss it. Loved the food so much, we went three nights in a row. There are plenty to eat in Kyoto. So, that was a deliberated choice. What can i say? The chef is so passionate about the food he cooked (desserts too). Absolutely delicious and heart-warming. In today’s franchise-ruled copy-paste world, Sugarhill Kyoto is a rare gem. Unique and Authentic to itself. Spent too much talking to the chef that time that we only have two photos. More next time.

Delicious food and very kind and welcoming owner/chef. The first thing they ask you is if you have any allergies. We came here multiple times during our trip because the food was great and there were multiple gluten free options. We got there at opening and it was not busy. The beer on tap was also good. Highly recommend!

Gluten-free situation: Sugarhill's owner has deep knowledge about food allergies and intolerances, and is able to accommodate that. He takes extra precautions, which is very assuring. Food in general: they serve wide variety of Japanese and Western dishes. I have tried several of them so far, and they are all excellent. Atmosphere: relaxed and homey. The owner and staff are always very friendly and welcoming, which makes the dining experience even better. Location: it is between Kawaramachi Matsubara and Kawaramachi Gojo. Kyoto's main street Shijo is about 10 minutes away on foot. Foreigner friendliness: they have English menu available. Also, the staff speaks English.

The food was absolutely amazing and the owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming. We had a big lunch so didn't order much but all dishes were extraordinary good. The chef cooked with his heart and you can feel it.

Food was amazing, a lot of options gluten-free. The owner is so kind, he adapts and he cooked totally different meals for us on a short time of period. Honestly, we were hesitating to enter but it was a great experience. He has been 22 years in that business, he knows what he does…he even closed later because of that, he was so kind!

Y’all should definitely visit SUGARHILL when you come to Kyoto. The owner opened the place 24 years ago and it is charming with delicious, authentic food. I highly recommend making this spot part of your visit to Kyoto.

Very tasty food and particularly friendly service. The chicken teryjaki was very good, as was the marinated tuna. The only thing you should check is the air conditioning, it was extremely hot in the restaurant, but still a clear recommendation for Kyoto

We were looking for a restaurant close to our hotel as it was raining a lot. They accept reservations thru instagram and google. The food was really good and they were really friendly changing one tiny thing for us as my wife doesn’t eat fish. I really recommend it.

My son has celiac disease so eating out is always a problem, specially in Japan. After reading the positive comments on the restaurant we decided to give it a try. We walked about 20 minutes with our 7 and 9 year old kids and arrived around 21:05. They explained that the last order was until 21:00 so they couldn’t serve us. As soon as I mentioned that we needed a gluten free meal, the owner opened the door and let us in. We had a wonderful dinner (marinated fish rice bowls and teriyaki chicken with rice), prepared at the moment by the kind owner and employee and with great care (and knowledge) about my son’s gluten free condition. I’m very grateful, totally recommend it and will be back if I can!

This is a must stop in Kyoto. The food was amazing and the service was too. We had the chicken teriyaki, rice balls, and wagyu. The small staff worked together like a well-oiled machine. English friendly.

If you are looking for gluten free food in Kyoto, this place is FANTASTIC! They have a ton of choices and are very knowledgeable. I can't recommend them enough. I ate here twice in my 3.5 day stay in Kyoto. Would have eaten here more if time allowed. Included are the pages that had GF items. Everything I had was fantastic.

This place is incredibly impressive and extremely delicious! The owner works so hard and makes your order in front of you while also providing exceptional service and personal interest. The food is outstanding, you can't go wrong with anything you order. The presentation and garnishing is stunning. Definitely check it out when in Kyoto!

Spent a great evening dining with a friend here this week. The owner and chef was very helpful with recommendations. The menu is in Japanese and English, along with pictures, so it is easy to understand the menu. But we decided to go with his suggestions. Loved the appetizer platter of the day. Then we shared the tofu and fresh greens salad. Our main dish was the teriyaki chicken. Love love loved it. Enjoyed cocktails and craft beer throughout the meal. Lively conversation. Comfortable atmosphere. Will definitely go again. Highly recommend to both local clientele and overseas visitors... when the borders open. I am from the USA. Easy walk to the near by temples etc. good location

This place is nothing but AMAZING! We went in accidentally because it was quite cold outside. Staffs are friendly and fluent in English, which makes the entire experience very easy. Menu is easy to follow and read, and prices are reasonable. The chef told us that the pasta is freshly made, and the way he cooked was very authentic: al dente. Food portions are not very big, but still worth the money. Definitely will recommend to my friends who would like to try.

My boyfriend and I have come here twice in our 3 out of 6 nights in Kyoto as the food is absolutely amazing!! I’m gluten free so I go for the teriyaki chicken which is just perfect, my boyfriend has had the grilled chicken and the chicken curry both of which he said were so delicious. The staff as well are lovely and attentive; and the chef (who I believe is the owner as-well) is so thoughtful and kind. We can confidently say that this is the best restaurant we have visited in our 1 month trip to Japan so far. I would give 10 stars if I could, thank you!!

This restaurant takes reservations (which is recommended), we booked via Instagram. Service was quick and efficient. We had mains and a sharing plate, and only spend about 30 mins here. Our server was American, therefore there was no language barrier. The food was good but nothing to shout about. They cater for a gluten free diet which seems rare in Japan.

I had my birthday celebration, here, in Sugarhill Kyoto. The food was amazing. The chef was so kind when bringing cake and gifts. And eventually, I received birthday gift from him, too (delicious snacks)! 😍 Many thanks for providing us with this amazing experience.

This was such a wonderful experience. We had an appetizer sampler, Caesar salad, the teriyaki chicken, and the sugar hill fried chicken. Finished the night off with the yuzu sherbet. Also, we had a few drinks. The food was amazing, especially the wasabi mustard sauce... we loved it!!! The service was also fantastic. English spoken. Will definitely return.

Extremely warm staff welcomed me in English and had great recommendations for appetizer and main. I ended up with just the teriyaki chicken gluten free and would recommend in a heartbeat. Only downside was the freezing AC, but maybe that's just my perception after having been outside in 90 degrees all day!

This place is amazing! The quality and presentation of the food are truly excellent! Japanese cuisine with a modern twist - fusion at its most delicious. The Teriyaki Chicken was probably the best I've ever had - you should try it! The staff are super friendly, attentive, and professional. We loved the modern and cozy style of the location - a fantastic experience overall!

This place is amazing! The quality and service are wonderful. The Teriyaki Chicken was the best I’ve ever tried! The staff are super friendly, attentive, and professional and are English friendly as well. The restaurant is really cozy. Overall, it was a great experience, so much that we came here two times and would do it again if we had more days in Kyoto!

The lighting was a bit dark for my liking. Other than that, the food was delicious, and prepared with love. The customer service was unparalleled. More of a place for dinner with a friend of significant other. 100 % recommended

My family and I had dinner here and we all agreed that this is the best small business restaurant. The food, the owner, and everything else is amazing. If you’re in Kyoto you have to visit this place.

Service was a bit slow - they seemed unstaffed and quite stressed; food was good but not super memorable. Would recommend the chicken teriyaki; omu-rice was ok but nothing really special
