Japanese photography has received global attention for its range of diverse, surreal, innovative, and exciting voices. The place to see and explore this visual art form is at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Meguro, which was the first of its kind built in Japan. Amusingly enough, it also calls itself the ‘Top Museum,’ which if nothing else is a rather memorable moniker. Those wishing to learn more about Japanese photography in general should pay a visit to the library on the fourth floor. It’s free and open to the public, with a good selection of reference materials, though these are primarily in Japanese. The museum also organizes lectures, workshops and photography-related events from time to time. Entrance fees vary by exhibition, so be sure to check their website before visiting.

Lovely museum. They had 3 exhibitions going on while I was there (one at each level) and you could choose which ones you wanted to visit. One exhibition cost around 1000 yen, 2 around 1500 yen and 3 at 2000 yen. I love the photography exhibition about Tokyo the most. The prints were beautiful and impressive. They also allow cameras. Makes for a great visit if you are popping by the area!

Inspiring and re-humanizing. Super special museum, thoughtfully curated and presented. Cozy, comfort food cafe with vintage photo/design ‘zines to view whilst waiting on lunch. Current exhibits are all treasures, however, the vast tribute/temporary exhibition of late, master Japanese nature photographer, Hoshino Michio, is an absolute must-see.

(Translated by Google) I've always thought that it was a tough, uncomfortable atmosphere, but there were no more entrances, a large staff, and there was no place to sit in Daido Moriyama's exhibition. can not. It may not be corona-friendly and you don't want to be dense, but there are too many staff members, so you can be careful even if you put a chair around it, right? All the sitting benches on the first floor were also taken up, anyway, it is an over correspondence. At the museum shop, all the books are covered with vinyl sheets, and you can't see them without calling the staff. I've never seen a bookstore covered with vinyl like this. I would like you to think a little more from the standpoint of the visitor.

Beautiful museum with 2 exhibitions that were available to view at the time. Revolution 9: Homma Takashi and After the Landscape Theory. Bought tickets for both which I highly encourage. There’s lockers available for storing your bags which I recommend using. While a rather small art museum, you can freely digest the works here at your own pace. The gift shop is quite extensive with the numerous photography books available featuring Japanese and western photographers.

After being closed for 2 years of renovations, the TOP is back and is not only hosting contemporary photography, but also mixed media including video as well as live talks from the artists. Unfortunately many of these may only be in Japanese without translation, but all the artwork on display has English translations of their descriptions. One of very few free museums in Tokyo, only certain exhibits require a fee to be paid. Otherwise it's very easy to get lost for an hour or so looking at the different exhibits.

Went on a weekday afternoon. No line, 800¥ for the Robert Doisneau and Motohashi Seiichi exhibit. Recommend about an hour. English friendly - translations for everything. Interesting photos and interesting stories. Would do if you find yourself around Ebisu Garden Palace.

This is a hidden gem in Tokyo where you find a bunch of museums. It is also one of rare public museum that is completely dedicated to photography. Its collection is not as strong as other larger museums such as NYC's metropolitan but special galley exhibit often accommodates some of the best photographer's work in the world. For example, this is the place a Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado did his first Genesis tour. Check regularly what they are exhibiting. The chances you find amazing exhibition are really high! They also do public projects and workshops. Many of them are often free as well. These are great occasions not only to participate Tokyo's vast photo communities but also learn a ton from experts in person.

(Translated by Google) A museum specializing in photography and video in Ebisu, Tokyo. There are many mixed media works, and you can enjoy many advanced and ambitious exhibitions. In August 2020, I saw the Exonimo Exhibition, Daido Moriyama Exhibition and Hikari Tomorrow Exhibition. All were wonderful exhibits. If you have an annual passport from Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art or Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, you can enjoy the exhibition for 20% off. A movie was also shown in the hall, and the day I went there was a Tokyo trial. The gallery spaces are very nice and exhibit presentations are excellent. The facility in general is interesting architecturally and of course, clean and well organized. For the most part, the two exhibitions I visited had most things in English. Note that you must pay in cash for tickets! The museum store takes standard credit and debit cards. The area is an absolute pleasure to shop, eat and just people watch.

(Translated by Google) In English notation, it is Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and it seems that it was established as a nickname at the time of renewal in 2016 because it is abbreviated as TOP. It can be said that it is a rare museum specializing in photography + video even if seen globally. It's located in Ebisu Garden Place, and it's easily accessible, so there are many restaurants nearby, so it might be a good idea to incorporate it into a date course. My first visit was at the 2004 Mario Testino exhibition, but I'm not particularly interested in fashion photography, so it's still a mystery why I went to see it.

Wonderful institution with marvelous resources! Most of the staffs are very nice and helpful. However, I would like to mention that there is one middle aged library lady with glasses who is rude and extremely strict (to the extent that it is "pointless") to the library users. For instance, instead of using 敬語 (honorific speech), she would use タメ口(tameguchi) to the people and treat them like "CHILDREN." I thought perhaps her attitude comes from the fact that I am a foreigner (a case which is not too difficult to find in Japan) but she kept that attitude to all people who were using the library so I guess that is her personality? I feel very uncomfortable about this. But please don't mistake me. Most of the staffs are super nice, angelic and helpful. It is unfortunate how one person can sometimes ruin the entire impression/experience....

We went with great enthusiasm to see the museum exhibition. Upon arrival they offered either a combined ticket of 1200 Yen or for single exhibition of 700 Yen. Since it was 17.20, we decided to get the single and look around. The quality of the images were as poor as the content. We were out in ten minutes. Art is subjective but photography has to have something that is of merit. Currently the exhibits are very poor.

A museum just the way I like it something that is missing from the Western ones. Superb design, really quiet and a focus on the actual photography. Impeccably clean and slick, I thank the organisers so allowing me to observe the works without noise. European museums should take notes on how to emphasise art and manners first.

Photography museum located in the heart of Ebisu. You have to buy tickets for the individual exhibits (though there is an option to buy a package) but the prices are reasonable. I thought they had an excellent variety of styles and the English information (plaques, commentary etc.) is surprisingly good.

(Translated by Google) A rare photo museum in the world. I was expecting to see Eumina Smith's Minamata, Man Rei's Surrealism, Kimura Ihei's snaps, and live photos of Japanese mainstream people. ····that? There is no permanent exhibition. When I went, it was a “picture festival”, and there was no single point of photography, all of which were image-based contemporary art. A crowd just exercising on the screen, a picture of a sloth following a 40-minute sloth, a traditional oriental dance. These were interesting and long-lived in these, but I had no idea what they came to see. I will revisit at different times, but it's good to have a different exhibition each time. I expect it next time. By the way, it was "free" at my time. When I entered the venue, I couldn't find anything to pay, and I was upset as if I had entered through the back door.

(Translated by Google) I used the theater hall several times. The facility is just beautiful. The toilet near the theater hall is also very clean and there are free lockers available for rent. The size of the theater hall is about the size of a Kino Cinema in the neighboring cinema complex. The chairs and the entire floor are clean and there is no problem. The impression is that the left and right rear seats are vacant, probably because the staff members explain that they look up at the back every time they purchase a ticket. It's certainly a little tiring, but if you're used to going to the cinema or have a healthy shoulder, there's no problem. Basically, it is a place with good etiquette, but there are many elderly people, so there are rare cases where strange people stand out.

(Translated by Google) A wonderful museum that holds a new century of photography, which is the gateway to young photographers, and introduces a wide range of contemporary photographic works from modern times. It's a pity that you have to walk from Ebisu station via Skywalk to some extent, but it's a place worth visiting. The cafes and shops that sell art books are also of good quality, and you can experience more than just watching the works. Not only the big names such as Daido Moriyama and Araki, but also the up-and-coming photographer Masaru Aikawa, etc., all came to know from the exhibition of this museum. If you want to see a collection of art photographs in Japan, there is no doubt that you should visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
