This art center has got to be one of my favorite places to visit while in Tokyo. There are 3 floors showcasing paintings, photography and sculptures all by Japanese artists. It cost 1000 yen for the regular exhibits and 2200 yen for the "Light" exhibit from the Tate museum, which I found was the least impressive. There are coffeeshops\restaurants on each floor with different menus. Highly recommended to spend a few hours exploring the different art works.

The Museum was jointly designed by Kisho Kurokawa and Nihon Sekkei, Inc. It comprises of 12 exhibition rooms, an auditorium, 3 cafes, museum shop ,art library and a restaurant. It's one of the biggest museums in the country.

3 floors of Japanese art exhibits. Free admission and super friendly and helpful staff makes the visit here extremely inviting and pleasant. Lots of Japanese calligraphy and historical paintings, landscapes and other rural scenery depictions. I had hoped to see more sculpture and 3D art, but this is mostly 2D paintings and a lot of historical calligraphy. I spent about 2 to 3 hours here and didn't see everything. I'm not a huge art connoisseur, but I still felt fascinated by the exhibits and if I had more time I likely would have stayed longer and appreciated the visit more. I would go back next time I'm visiting Tokyo.

I recently visited The National Art Center Tokyo, primarily to catch the Saint Laurent exhibit, which was of particular interest to my wife, a designer herself. The experience was impressive, both in terms of the exhibit and the architecture of the museum. The museum's architecture is striking – it boasts large open spaces that are a marvel in themselves, showcasing exceptional design. This made the experience of exploring the exhibits all the more enjoyable. The Saint Laurent exhibit was particularly impressive, showcasing a range of pieces that my wife found incredibly inspiring. From what I understood, the collection on display was quite valuable and well-curated. Inside the museum, there's a great spot to grab a coffee, offering a nice break amidst the exploration. Despite spending several hours at the museum, I suspect we only saw about half of it. The National Art Center Tokyo is quite expansive, and there's a lot to take in. We're already looking forward to our next visit. For anyone interested in design, fashion, or art, The National Art Center Tokyo, especially with its special exhibits like the Saint Laurent one, is a fantastic destination. It's not just a museum; it's a space that truly celebrates creativity and innovation.

The building is indeed stunning! And the access is also so simple through the connected train station. I had no problems buying my tickets online (which I strongly recommend, because lines can be huge!), still I had to wait a while to get inside, even with the tickets ready. I specifically attended to the light exhibition through Tate Modern’s archive if I’m not mistaken. The exhibition was sure very well curated, but almost every artwork had great amounts of people in front of it and it was hard to go through everything and enjoy the experience. There were many pieces I couldn’t take a close look, because of the congestion. Also, I got quite interested in a few items at the store, but the paying lines were so awfully long I didn’t even considered buying. My big suggestion is: go in a non-busy weekday if you can. Other than the listed problems, the gallery is amazing and really worth going if you’re in Tokyo. There are many “smaller” less crowded exhibitions happening in the Art Center and I had a great time strolling through them as well.

Today was a 5 college exhibit, and it was fantastico. I ran out of time to see everything though. Such art, such architecture, such strange chairs!

It’s free to enter the building but you have to pay to see any exhibit. Most of them seem to be around ¥700, and the one I’ve been too was absolutely worth it. Would definitely come back to see more. The cafe and the restaurant are very stylish too 😎

Great art centre where various exhibitions can be visited. The architecture of the place is already worth the visit. Staff is very friendly, there are some options to have a snack/lunch/drink and the gift shop also has some nice items. All in all I would recommend to go here! Most exhibitions are free, others may charge a little fee.

First time visiting in Tokyo and I was seriously impressed with this place! It’s massive inside, well organized and the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition they have on right now was spectacular! A must have for anyone interested in couture fashion. The gift shop at the end of the exhibit was okay, wish it had more exclusive items for Japan. Only the book was exclusive.

Went there for the Tate exhibition. Very interesting collection showing collections of different artists with the theme of light. Detailed explanation on the artwork were shown in written or video forms, allowing deeper understanding of the artists' creation process. There were free exhibitions besides the Tate exhibition. Can spend half a day in the museum if want to walk through all the exhibitions. Free ¥100 coin lockers were available. Can store the bags and walk freely around. The coin would be returned when you get back your items in locker. One more good point was that plenty rest corners and seats were available along the exhibitions and outside the exhibitions. Can take intermittent rest from the walking.

Lovely building and really cute cafe. Some of the exhibitions were free - no crowds at all. But the Louvre Museum Exhibition Painting Love was very crowded, and I had to queue for maybe 30 + minutes, so I gave up. Overall the staff were very helpful, their english was really good.

There's so much going on in this building architecturally. It's almost too much. Many beautiful details, and severely modern. Extraordinary structures populate the space, it's really amazing. It's the museum in Blade Runner. Go and see.

A beautiful museum with amazing architecture. I had the opportunity to see two different shows that day. One of the shows by Tamura Satoru was offered for free, which was great! If you have the opportunity, I strongly recommend you to see the Museum Ludwig Cologne show(not free), probably the greatest collection of artwork across all genres. Artists such as Warhol, Picasso, Pollock, Jean Arp, etc... Afterwards, I grabbed some food/drinks from the cafe and sat outside on the balcony while enjoying the weather.

We visited on a Sunday morning, and everything looked good, but not enough indoor lighting, so the ambiance was not sufficient for Instagram. I got the premium coffee in the level 1 cafe. However, for the price they're charging here, I would instead go for a drip coffee in a Starbucks. We drank our coffee on the outside terrace. This is the highlight of our stay since its relaxing nature feels in this area. Overall, all good here.

Free... but every exhibition costs money. Confusing. Probably a language issue but we were told that no ticket was needed, but every exhibition wanted to see a ticket. Eventually, using google translate, one exhibition let us in after seeing our passports. I have no idea why. The exhibition of local up and coming artists was interesting, with a few eye catching pieces, and the building impressive. But I was left a bit nonplussed.

I attended a special exhibit from the Metropolitan Museum of New York at the National Art Center Tokyo. There were a total of 65 paintings displayed including those by some of the most famous artists in history. As expected, it was a nice exhibit. I was more impressed though not by a painting but by the building itself. The building was designed by Kisho Kurosawa who first came to fame with his futuristic Nakagin capsule building in 1972. The green wavelike façade evokes feelings of nature. The atrium features a ceiling of over eighty feet high making it feel extremely spacious. If you like amazing architecture, this is a place you don’t want to miss.

One of the scene from the famous hit movie in japan, “Your name” is taken at this museum. There are a cafe at each floor. Also, there’s an art library at the third floor. Mainly in Japanese. Reviewed this at 2018. Now here’s the new one. Still classy. Elegant. And photogenic! I recommend you for the visit. But because of the coronavirus pandemic, there’s some time changed for its opening time. So just have to pay some attention.

Beautiful architecture and a very well curated museum. I saw the “Henri Matisse - Forms in Freedom” exhibit. It was impressive to see all the 150 showpieces from the collections from Musée D’Orsay, Musée Matisse Nice and the large Flowers and Fruits Cut Out, now restored.

The art center boasts of a great design. The building looks like waves gently rolling creating a beautiful facade. In front sits a glass tea house by a renowned artist. I came with my friend to view the TREASURES FROM BUDAPEST, an exhibition that runs from December 4, 2029 to March 16, 2020. All 130 artworks are presented in various themes, with each section of the wall or room in a thematic hue. The colors of the walls highlight the artworks in a manner that guests viewing them get engrossed and captivated. There was green, red, blue, white, lilac, and lighting in soft tones. Captions are written in Japanese and English, the staff assist you with whatever you need to make your visit memorable and comfortable. Technology has a role in the exhibiton too, a QR code links you to the data about the artifacts. Although you may still enjoy writing marginal notes on the printed guide.

Beautiful museum and area of Tokyo. Perhaps due to the timing (July 2020), it felt like the museum had very few exhibits given the space. It’s such a huge and well-designed space that I expected a large permanent gallery.

Astonishing current exhibit of Japanese fine art. Massive numbers of brilliant works, including traditional calligraphy/poetry, sculpture, large-scale, Japanese-style contemporary paintings. Shear amount of great art makes this a potential, multi-day visit.

Absolutely terrible service. Left an expensive umbrella at their umbrella stand and phoned to ask them to hold on to it until tomorrow. Was refused, told it's my own responsibility and they can't walk 10 steps on THEIR OWN PROPERTY to pick up the umbrella. Where's the famous Japanese hospitality? Apparently their politeness only applies to blasting keigo around and not actually being helpful. Sad, because the building and the exhibitions are very good.

Excellent Museum! This was the first time I visit. The museum’s architecture itself is already attention catching. The museum was then showing YSL and 大卷伸嗣 exhibitions. Both were very well arranged and curated, and well managed which part can take photos/ videos which part cannot (maybe a disappointing news for some visitors), for the smooth show experience to all visitors. I would say both shows were very amazing and stunning, and it opened my eyes comparing to HK’s exhibitions - why others can do it better. I know this museum does not have always on/ permanent exhibits, and that’s why giving the flexibility for the museum to keep bringing in new elements. Next time when I visit Tokyo, this place is definitely on my list.

Beautiful art center! Ofcourse it was busy because of the Kimi No Wa scene. But the exhibits are beautiful - specifically the calligraphy art by high school students. very beautifully done! I wish we got to try to cafe but the line was super long. Also, there is no AC in the common areas. It’ll be hot so bring some water!

One of the prettiest museums I've ever been to. The design is so unique and pleasing to the eyes, equally a masterpiece of its own aside from the pieces it carries inside. Like most major art galleries in Japan, the NACT (National Art Center Tokyo) carries both traditional and contemporary Japanese art. They also accomodate university graduate program exhibits also, and noteworthy artists (the rest of the museum is free to access, but some major exhibitions are paid.) There are also lockers which you can use to store bags and coats, so you can browse comfortably inside the museum. The deposit will be returned once you have retrieved your items.

One of my favorite place in Tokyo, high behind the busy street, pretty close to ropponggi station. The building itself is great and next to the main building there are a lot of area for people to chill and enjoy the moment. The art center often has great special exhibitions, it is really well curated; make sure not to miss their regular exhibition, it is usually free of charge and might have some interesting great content to surprise you.

The museum is one of the most beautiful ones I have ever visited and one of the places I would recommend to visit first. The museum provides room for exhibits mainly to less famous artists. Depending on which exhibitions one is able the attend, the artwork might be fantastic and close to the performance of more renowned artists. The pieces of art on display is very diverse and interesting, especially due to vast collection of different styles.

A must go place in Tokyo especially if it’s your first time! They have lots of different exhibitions and it probably will take the whole day to explore them all. Their cafe is nice and their iced coffee was delicious🫶🏻The cafe was also featured on “Your Name” the anime so if you’re a fan, it’s worth the experience!

Loved this museum. I came here for this special exhibition of spinning crocodiles. The exhibit was free and I loved who weird it was. After that I got a great lunch from the top floor French restaurant. I then we to two more galleries on the top floor. One I had to pay ¥500 and the other was free. Both had really cool and varied art. The building is also incredible to look at. Very open with lots of natural light.

Primarily, we visited for the famous cafe where the lunch date in the anime Your Name took place. We ate at the cafeteria in B1 though where the price is less expensive and the food more filling. There are a few exhibits, and the special exhibitions are paid. The exhibits are always updated and only for a limited time so I think you can see something every time, unless you come to often. NACT can be accessed directly from Chiyoda station!

It was Lee Ufan's exhibition that's showing when I visited. This place is just amazing. If you're an Arts fan, this place is a must to visit. There will be several halls that have different exhibitions, so you may just pay which exhibition that you would like to visit. Besides, the architectural designs of this building is amazing too. I totally enjoyed my time here.

「THE SPACE WITHIN」 「ADVERTISING AND BEYOND」 「THE LOGO」 「THE POWER OF GRAPHIC DESIGN」 「ICONIC BRANDING PROJECTS」 「LINES / FLOW」 無料の音声ガイドで、解説を聞きながら回ることができるので、イヤフォン持参が必須です。

On July 29, 2023, around 10:20 am, my family and I had the pleasure of visiting this remarkable museum. Firstly, I must express that the museum and the exhibition "LIGHT: Works from the Tate Collection" were truly fantastic; everything was of the highest quality. We were impressed by how everyone who visited that day adhered diligently to the exhibition rules, which added to the overall pleasant experience. Upon concluding the exhibition, we left with a sense of awe and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Subsequently, we headed down to the B1 floor for a delightful lunch. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was very comfortable. However, I must share a less positive aspect of our visit. My dad unfortunately twisted his ankle during the lunch. Despite his best efforts to be considerate and careful when removing his shoe so as not to disturb anyone, we noticed a Japanese couple (possibly in their 40s to 55s) sitting at a nearby table, displaying hostility towards him. This was disheartening, as we have always respected and valued cultural norms. In conclusion, I sincerely hope that everyone who visits the exhibition will enjoy it even more than the people around them. Let's all make the experience memorable and respectful for everyone involved.

The staff seemed so afraid to interact with people at times, (moreso foreigners sad to say) but even with limited Japanese to ask, Where do I buy a Ticket, How much is the Ticket, where is the Entrance, and other simple question, they broke down and didn't know how to answer me. For main exhibitions, entrances and exits are clearly marked, but for other smaller galleries, they don't mark the starting entry point so it causes smaller mixups of walking thru exits and the staff becoming upset. The exhibitions themselves are not bad and I enjoyed the opportunity to see some of them, but staff made it very inconvenient. I even had to help another Japanese Man find the exhibit he was looking for. Please get yourself together Staff, and if you are going to use English, please practice more. So much of it was confusing that I kept trying them to use Japanese and explain it slowly because I could actually understand... Exhibit gives the extra star but the staff killed the experience a bit. Crowded on Weekdays, lots of clustering without concern of Covid. Measure are in effect but in Exhibitions, staff doesn't care.

It's not really air conditioned so it's easy to feel warm and thirsty. It's free but most of what's being displayed requires admission of some kind around $5 per person. Not expensive but most of it isn't free. What I saw definitely interesting and I took a lot of pictures and translated a lot of the captions

No permanent local art exhibits, there was a Louvre special exhibition when I was there, probably good for the locals but for tourists who wish to learn about Japanese masters, this doesn’t seem to be the place, despite being the national art Centre. Nonetheless, it was still interesting to see the amateur art displayed. I went to one that shows the shortlisted entries of Japan’s nation-wide water-based medium art competition. It’s nice that the state promote arts with such initiatives. Some of the pieces are really good.

Visited for the Cartier exhibition. Autumn leaves and glass buildings were beautiful. In front of the main entrance, Tokujin Yoshioka's "Glass Tea Room ~Koan~" was on display. This day was a free viewing day of the Nitten. The Cartier exhibition was very nice and the display method was elaborate. It was the best memory to see so much jewelry at once. I was happy that the audio guide was available for free rental. On the terminal, I was able to learn more about the text and visuals. At the last exhibition, there was also a space where photos were OK. The richness of the museum shop is impressive. We ate at the cafe downstairs. The inside of the museum was a very nice place, with a lot of wood and a different atmosphere from the glass-enclosed exterior. It was a wonderful museum that I would like to visit again and again. I thought I'd try Mori Art Museum and Ladder next time.

The Art Center building is very large and houses many exhibits, some famous cafes, restaurants, and gift shops. I admittedly came here because the location was referenced in Kimi No Na Wa but I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had at the exhibit! The exhibit I went to was massive and took up parts of both the 2nd and 3rd floors. The artwork was pretty and I spent over an hour going through the exhibit. It was a great experience and worth the ~500-700 yen exhibit entry fee.
