This is the house of Fugu shashimi. The stores inside this fish market sell sushi and shashimi - the freshest I've ever eaten. We arrived at 8:45 am puzzled that none of the stores were open. Then we saw them preparing and getting sushi on display. Then we were told they only start selling at 9:30 am . People started to flood the market and started queuing up at 8:45 am. We stood in line too , there were just so many people and if we didn't get in line, we wouldn't have gotten a share of anything. We're glad we did- the tuna sushi- so many varieties - blue and yellow fins - melt in the mouth goodness. We also tried fugu ¥1000. It wasn't particularly tasty but we need to try it as we won't be able to get that anywhere else. If you intend to come here, come early, be ready to stand for 45 mins, have another person queue for other stores, there's this fish soup , that seems very popular with the locals. We didn't see it until we finished our meal. We bought our share of sushi and sat next on the bench outside the market. Everyone did that- the place is very popular with the locals. See photos for sushi, the stores in the market, the place we sat for a sushi picnic along with many locals. Highly recommended if you're around Shimanoseki! It's next to Kaikyokan.

Encounter the best sushi of your life at the seafood market If you go to Karato Market, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays are recommended. Check business days on the Karato Market website Selling sushi aimed at the general public at a reasonable price. The raw fish is soft and fresh, and the rice grains dissolve smoothly in the mouth without feeling stuck. Sushi heaven while looking at the retro Mojiko Port and enjoying the sea breeze.

Karato Fish Market is a tourist place where fresh seafood and sashimi are highly recommended. It is famous for its fresh puffer fish. The fish market has two levels with some dining places located on the second floor. There are only certain stalls open for business and the majority of them sell the same type of sushi. The price of the sushi here is reasonable and the overall thickness of the sashimi is acceptable.

Better to be here on the weekends as people usually sell their products on the weekend and people visits the place and eat with their family along the Korato port.

Only a few shops open on Friday morning. Although only 2 to 3 shops selling sushi were opened, there were still a large variety of sushi you can choose from. The food were fresh. Some people will enjoy the food bought from 1/F at the rest area at 2/F, or simply enjoy the food at the seaside.

One of the best places to go in Yamaguchi! The sushis here are not only affordable but are super delicious also! I would love to live near this market in order to get fresh food everyday, that’s how much I am in love with the place

We visited the market on weekday and there were not much stalls working, so we decided to try some puffer fish dishes in a restaurant at the food corner. Sashimi or deep fried fugu are both tender with good flavour and worth trying once when you visit this market.

Make a detour when you are passing this area between Kyushu and Honshu Island for affordable and fresh sushi!

A very lively market on Saturday morning. Probably one of the biggest pieces of fish filets on rice I’ve ever seen. Fresh and relatively inexpensive for what you get.

Very crowded, all shops basically sells the same thing: cheap sushi People usually try the fugu sashimi here but I definitely won’t recommend to try it here. It’s much worse than those restaurants serving fugu and pricy too. Don’t think its worth to go unless you so happen to pass by and has no better place to go There are some restaurants on the building next to the market which might be a little less touristy

Fresh fish and new experience to have sushi on the floor outside. There is a car park opposite the market (5mins walk) no need to wait the long queue from the market car park.

Super fresh sushi and seafood, excellent choice and nice location. Been there twice and can’t wait to come again! Just make sure to get there early enough 👌

Seriously, it's very crowded. There are slight differences in products between stores, but are they similar? It's best to choose early and eat while looking out at the strait. There is a small but indoor dining area on the second floor. Personally, I recommend the shop on the second floor. You can eat slowly and calmly. Enjoy the fugu too.

Great lively market experience for sushi connoisseurs. You can pick and choose tons of different sushi options from various sellers. Longer the line, cheaper & fresher the sushi!

Smaller but almost similar to Taukiji in Tokyo. Fairly neat market for fresh seafood and sushi. But easy to pick and choose a number of sushi cuts to eat in some of the open areas outdoors. Fugu is probably the most common fish on the menu here, not sure if they’re farmed or caught.

Huge market but we arrived too late at about 1pm , 95% of the stalls were closed and we managed to get some dried seafood produce and fugu crackers.

I wish I could go again! Incredible variety of fish at reasonable prices. Quite busy but all stalls work really fast. The fish tastes so fresh and yummy. Also a great opportunity to try the famous blowfish fugu. Very nice experience. Totally worth it!

There was an unpleasant sewerage smell which was unfortunate. Get there early if you want the fish market experience. We went to a restaurant nearby for lunch as there were no food for sale any more at the markets.

You have to get there at a very early hour in order to witness all the action of this predominantly wholesale seafood market or else you are going to water your time and money (the transportation costs were quite expensive). Also be careful with the nearby seafood restaurants as their food quality can vary substantially!

What an awesome place! Freshest cheapest sushi ever with a huge variety with all the vendors. Cheap and easy parking. Recommend going earlier to beat the ques and crowds. Highly recommend.

Crowded on a Sunday afternoon, but worth it for the amazing seafood. The hustle and bustle was also part of the fun experience, and plenty of ice cream nearby for a treat after you eat!

Neat market for fresh seafood and sushi. I don’t shop for fish here but it’s easy to pick and choose a number of sushi cuts to eat in some of the open areas outdoors. This place can get CRAZY crowded (but, you know, maintain social distancing or whatever) and no one seems to mind a little gentle jostling to get up the the front of the line. Sushi cuts range from standard tuna/salmon to more exotic cuts of pufferfish and whale.
