若かりし頃、穂高を旅することになった主たる動機は、碌山美術館を見学することだったような気がしています。1980年前後でした。
こぢんまりとした美術館でした。仔細の記憶がはっきりしていないのですが、入り口から真っすぐ歩いて行くと、作品が置かれている明るい空間に至りました。部屋全体が太陽の光に満ちていたような場面を思い出しています。目的の「あこがれ」(※)を鑑賞するために訪問したはずでした。その空間のほぼ中央に「女」のブロンズ像が置かれてありました。何かを感じ取ろうと像を観て回りました。感じ取れたのは、あこがれを彷彿とさせる伸びやかさではなく、身をよじり、苦悶しているように見える姿でした。
重々しい気分をかかえて、美術館を後にしました。ここでも「女」像の写真を購入していました。約29×34㎝程の大きさで、右下に「ROZAN
MUZEUM」と凹凸刻印されています。ネットで見られる「女」の像は、上半身が前に突き出ていて、やや不安定な印象を受けると思われますが、手元にある写真は、下方から撮られているのですが、重心にブレがなく、重厚で、気高さが感じられます。主観ですが、「あこがれ」とは少し違う印象を持ちました。観る角度によって異なる、もしくは相反する感想を抱かされる優れた表現能力、力量の確かさを感じざるを得ません。
元々は、石膏像ですが、1910年重要文化財に指定され、東京国立近代美術館に所蔵さています。

穂高に行かれなくとも、新宿の「中村屋サロン美術館」に行けば、「女」像を観ることができます。(碌山制作の石膏像をブロンズに鋳造した作品は穂高にありますが、そのブロンズ像から石膏像を造り、それを鋳造したブロンズ像が「中村屋サロン美術館」にあるとのことのようです。)
機会を見つけて行ってみようと思っています。
