My friend discovered this place in a guide book and suggested we visit. We were there late afternoon, just as places started to open. It was a good time to be there as it wasn't too busy and we should choose a restaurant. When we left, it was very busy already. I don't know the name of the restaurant we chose but we had excellent meat (pork, heart, liver, chicken) and vegetable (green peppers, onion and mushroom) skewers, cooked perfectly. One friend and I had beer and my other friend had sake with lime. Very fun!

Very cool to see and walk down this teeny alley. Also very touristy and packed. Hard to find a place to eat. Most, if not all food stalls have cover charges. Food was fine. Another been there, done that.

Here for the photographs only. It is a bit touristic given how popular this area has become, but I did observe a good amount of locals still dining at certain bars/restaurant. Night time sets the tone for great photos and a great spot to walk around.

Google accurately designates this place as a tourist attraction. There are a lot of foreigners crowded here and little-to-no locals. It's nice for a walk through but we didn't personally have a desire to sit at one of the stalls and eat. I gave the high rating based off of the community's effort to make it a pleasant experience aesthetically. Would I come back and attempt to eat here? No. Things you should know: I. LOCATION Omoide Yokochō is hidden in a narrow alleyway, tucked off of a major intersection cross-walk. A sign above the entry of the alleyway will indicate your arrival. II. SERVICE The restaurants here are unique, stall-style shops. A lot of the food served throughout all of the restaurants we noted were seasoned meat sticks. Not much other variety noticed. III. QUALITY The community truly decks out this alleyway with seasonal decor. It's cozy to walk through at night. IV. CAPACITY Densely crowded with foreigners. I'm unsure how authentic the food is or if it's catered to foreign palates.

I think it’s for the experience/ vibe rather than the food really. It’s a short alleyway with lots of small food stalls (mainly grilled chicken/meat). The vibe is very old Japanese movie style. The food is definitely not very good, service is probably below average . However if you are opt for the environment, you’re in the right place. You can easily find better food elsewhere but just not the atmosphere. As a tourist, 1 visit is enough for me.

I really loved strolling through the Memory Lane formally known as the piss alley. The small bars and restaurants are full of locals and tourists and each specializes in different bites. I had really fresh sushi in one of the small bars. Fun to seat outside and people watch.

I came around 8:00pm and the place was a bit busy. It’s all but really typical from japan and from tokyo. You will wait a little bit regarding the fact that each restaurant are really small (4-8 person max). Keep in mind that it’s better to have cash in this place. If you want to take photos, come in the morning or super earlier at the beginning of the night.

Highly recommended place to Take some real authentic pictures. Especially at afternoon or evening it’s gonna be magic. There are lot of traditional restaurants and bars for good food or a nice drink. It’s possible that owner don’t speaking English so could be difficult

Nostalgic, messy, crowded and a lot of fun! If you want a taste of old japanese bars, come to this small corridor that is full of small izakaya (japanese casual bars). This place is located on the East side of Shinjuku Station, look for the green signs.Omoideyokocho means in japanese "Street of old memories".

This alley is one of my favorite places in Shinjuku. The decorations change each season, but my favorite is the autumn display. In the fall, colorful momiji will hang down from above! You can walk through the alley and enjoy the views even if you don’t eat. I usually go during the day when most places are not opened yet, so it is less crowded.

Amazing spot in Tokyo filled with little izakaya bars. If you're looking to be transported back in time visit this place, it really feels like you're in Tokyo years ago. Great atmosphere in all of the bars really so it doesn't really matter where you go if you ask me. Be aware that most of them will have a cover charge though but we got a nice little appetiser for that. We had some amazing yakitori snacks with our beers. Highly recommend coming here if you're in Tokyo!

It’s a nice area to walk through. Great experience. It’s extremely crowded and you may have to wait for a good while before being seated anywhere. We probably wait 40 minutes before we got seated. Not all places have the same food. However, I believe some places do reservations, if that’s the case you’ll have a great time eating at one of these spots.

Now this old funky street we loved probably the best in Tokyo. Great variety, lots of small places offering Japanese style streetfood, seafood, meat, whatever you can imagine. Don't miss it

We were staying in Shinjuku and decided to try this area even though the reviews were mixed. Yes it is iconic as a typically old street in Tokyo and yes it is fascinating to walk through it but don't stop to eat because the food was awful and extremely over priced. We had eaten in many places before, enjoying all the Japanase/Korean cusine on offer, so it was a shock to be presented with almost inedible skewers of meat and chicken. My advice is to visit the area, take pictures and then eat elsewhere. We had a wonderful 2 weeks in Japan and the meal we had here stood out as being the worst we had by a long shot.

Unfortunately many of the businesses were closed due to Covid and State of Emergency. I will definitely revisit again to try the yakitori and experience the alleyways & atmosphere here. Update 3/30/22 … all the yakitori stands and restaurants are open and I was able to enjoy the atmosphere❣️

Very popular eating and drinking spot. It would pay to go early if you have your eye on a particular restaurant. The staff were very approachable and friendly. There were cards printed in English that helped to explain the procedure and what additional charges you would be charged. Very helpful. Setting expectations, it is quite small and compact. You will be almost rubbing shoulders with your seat, mate. It's all good fun. The food was yummy, and it inspired us to try and recreate upon returning home. A must try experience.

Didn’t even realize that we were in the middle of an “attraction”; came upon this narrow street of restaurants while searching for a restroom (very clean for public space) We walked through the packed streets but nothing jumped out at us to eat. It was moody/dimly lit with many places wanting cover charges and posted signs to not take photos of inside. I would appreciate that if I were actually sitting down for a meal.

Pretty cool but definitely a tourist trap. Worth a stroll through to see what it's like. Lots of Youtube and Instagram kind of people taking photos and video. We stopped and ate dinner at one of the restaurants. Most places seemed to serve whatever kind of meat or even intestines you want grilled on a skewer with or without vegetables. Very tasty but a bit overpriced when compared to other food options available within a few blocks. The place we ate at wouldn't serve carryout but also charged a "table fee" to sit down. I don't remember the name of the restaurant but it wasn't the best service. Kind of got the feeling a lot of the restaurant owners and cooks weren't the biggest fans of all the tourists clogging the alleyway and taking photos. Makes sense, they were annoying me too:)

A very cute alley with a very Japanese feeling on it. It's located near the city, which is easy to find. There are many izakaya along the small street, they sell street foods, snack, sake, alcoholic drinks, and many more. I came just for sight seeing and took some photos though since i don't like alcohol and was full at the time. For a tourist, i personally think it's a must visit spot. Very cute and memorable experience.

A beautiful experience where you can enjoy the delicious, various skewers which are charcoal grilled right in Front of you. Please do note that most yakiniku, yakitoriya shops in these streets will have a cover charge added to the tab.. 350 to 500 yen per person.

You will smell it before you see it. Great food street in Japan, super fresh foods, delicious smells. Can get crowded, (its an alleyway after all), however worth going for myriad of fresh street food prepared before your eyes. Best time is at night for evening meal, the ambiance, sounds sights, smells, BBQ smoky fog, exotic offerings have to be experienced to be truly appreciated. Remember this is street food, not 5 star hotel and you get to see and meet the chef in the kitchen, literally in front of you! [Plan visit after Pandemic is over, as most counter stalls are currently closed]

100% must-go place in Shinjuku if you would like to enjoy the authentic Japanese bars. When the night comes, you can feel the smokiness, the smell of grilled chicken, oyster, etc. The price is a little bit high and the food here is at the average level.

This alleyway was a really fun and interesting experience. There are a lot of bars open late at night. Most of the bars served meat skewers and/or noodles. I had a delicious yuzu beer at one of the bars here. The crowd is friendly and it’s a fun way to practice your Japanese and make new friends. You should visit at least once while in Shinjuku.

At this famous back alley you can enjoy great Japanese cuisine. A foreigner friendly street very close to shinjuku station. A great place to try Yakitori and karaage with beer. They also have english menu. Food stalls are small, seating arrangements are limited.

Beautiful place! I always dreamed to visit this little spot. It's super crowded, of course, but it totally worth it. I would say that a "con" is that most of restaurants serve yakitori, (and most of them are full), but it make sense, it should be "Sit, live the experience, leave your spot to next customer". Food are good quality and prices are average.

Really cool street, although it's full of foreigners. Went to tacchan and had a great time, photos of yakitori and scallop below. Really tight place, so beware if you don't like squeezing. Most other stalls are busy as well. After tacchan I went to this little shop down the lane called isago(asked the master). There was only one other japanese man inside who was in full business attire. Not sure why there's no one inside, but decided to give it a shot. Asked for some recommendations and he mentioned the grilled tofu and eggplant, ordered both and did not regret it. Not sure why the place isn't more popular, but thankfully it wasn't or I would never have gone in. Compared to all the other stalls the decor is alittle dated and it looks like its been there a long time. I definitely recommend hitting it up, I have a picture of the signboard and shop in my review. It does allow smoking so you might have to avoid if you hate smoke, but the food to me is worth it.

Great streets with beautiful lanterns and orange leaves. Historical site but also pleasant to wonder through and eat or drink at the many cosy bars / restaurants in this area. Just be prepared to queue if you want a good spot and to be paying seating charge when you enter a place which is an additional fee on top of your orders from the menu.

This was so much fun! The narrow alley is lined on both sides with restaurants and bars I enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled squid and veggies. Honestly, the portions were small relative to the price, but the food was tasty, and I loved the experience. Most of the patrons were tourists. Had nice chats with an Australian, a couple of Swedes, and a nice Japanese couple.

FOOD AND DRINK! Restaurants with 6 seats and everyone bustling by. What a lovely little market street of skewers and alcohol. This street is the perfect place to jump in and try anything and everything! The staff were busy but helpful. The beer was cold and the food was delicious. Just peak to see if there's a seat and tuck up next to others for some fast but very fresh and tasty food!

A must try place in Tokyo, it's amazing to see lots of people and lots of Japanese local delicacies. There are some stores where you need to eat fast as people are waiting and the chef is looking at you too. I had to finish my bowl of noodles in less than 5 mins.

The alley is a block in distance. Narrow with food stalls on both sides. Many restaurant stalls post a no photo sign. Also called piss alley and we were glad that it did not smell like piss. We only checked out the alley because we were close by. We were there on a Friday night around 10pm and it was not crowded.

I recently dined at a restaurant on, Omoide yokocho street, and unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed. First off, they charge an additional table fee, which I found quite unreasonable and unwelcoming. The menu predominantly features organ-based dishes, such as intestines, which might appeal to some but certainly wasn't to my taste. Although the quality of the food was average, the focus on organ meats and the unexpected extra charges significantly detracted from my dining experience. Overall, I was dissatisfied and cannot recommend this restaurant.

This little alley in Shinjuku is magic. The many small traditional restaurants are filled up with people enjoying real Japanese traditional food. Yakitori among other foods are filling up the air with mouth watering smells which attracts the customers in. Although the little alleys are in a area surrounded by high-rise buildings, once you are in, the local vibe is teleporting you to a new unknown amazing place featuring interesting delicious foods, charming chefs enticing everyone to let loose the everyday life concerns and have fun. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience the very essence of Japanese cuisine tradition.

Had a fantastic time at Omoide Yokocho! After exploring Ueno, we visited for dinner. Despite warnings about places not welcoming foreigners, we were pleasantly surprised at the warm reception. Only a request for no photos if not dining. We ordered a variety of dishes, and my constant photo-taking went unnoticed—luckily! 😆 Prepared with cash, we navigated places not accepting cards smoothly. The cozy warmth from the grill was perfect for the 10-degree weather. Top 5 food experiences in Tokyo for us! Highly recommend Omoide Yokocho for an authentic, welcoming atmosphere and delicious food. Can't wait to go back!

Lovely little street. Smoky, well lit and what a vibe. Mainly tourist, which for some is unfortunate. Most unfortunate is the price of food and drinks, more expensive than literally the street next to it. It’s understandable given how popular it is but just a shame.

A small street located at walking distance from Shinjuku station. You might walk past it and never notice it. Contains many izakaya restaurants that the locals (and a few foreigners) frequent for their dose of beer and fried foods. The people are very welcoming and some restaurants even have English menus targeted towards the tourists. However, don’t expect it to be cheap, with a beer at 500 yen and almost all food items (karaage, yakitori, etc) ranging around 450 yen.

This tight little alley is full of yummy, grilled street foods. The space is very tight and a bit difficult to navigate without English signs. You’ll leave smelling like the grilled meats here. But the food is wow! Minimal ingredients, well done. Expect there to be a cover charge. I had really good grilled pork belly, marinated raw tuna and chicken at one of the places here. More like appetizers because I still got dinner after. Prices considered, it isn’t a budget meal but worth a try at least once.

Quite an interesting place to go if you would like to experience the legit Japanese street-side food bars. Gets quite smokey when the stores open at night so make sure you're ready to smell like barbecue when going here. Prices are fine, and food tastes decent, but probably not the place to go if you want to avoid close contacts with people.

I remember the first time I visited this place, many years ago. I found the how to get there instructions on a blog and it was hard to find. It's funny because it is actually right there. I feel like once I discovered it, it came to reality. If you discover it, enjoy the hot sake and yakitori which almost exclusively what these tiny restaurants sell. Visit it in the night, it will feel like one scene out of Blade Runner.

SHINJUKU OMOIDE-YOKOCHO, an old-fashioned alley was born right after world war at western area of Shinjuku. The most of shops were selling the offal (MOTSU in Japanese) as non-regulated goods. Therefore, the grilled offal (MOTSU-YAKI) shops are spread along the alley and sine then many of shops became very popular.

Fun spot to grab dinner! Lots of tiny stalls in small space that make the most of every inch! It's a bit crowded and smokey as the night goes on. Must have yen!!!

You can get really cheap food and very traditional Japanese soul food in there. Nice environment. Friendly stuff always. Nice to visit for foreigners especially.

Yakitori View — shot this set while waiting for my skewers to be prepared. I was super lucky to be seated near the entrance which made a nice framing for the streets of Omoide Yokochō.

A must-see place for tourists. My advice would be, look at the actual sizes of their barbecues. Sometimes they look big in the menu but smaller in actual.

A busy alleyway, lost in time, in the middle of Tokyo. Dead in the morning, it comes alive at night. After work, you can find dozens of small eateries serving grilled meats and veggie skewers and ice cold beer. Ignore the (many) people filming the alley and find an empty seat to enjoy some delicious food!
