We had an incredible dinner here. We found this restaurant on a small map called "Muslim Map Kanda Area" featuring friendly restaurants where vegetarian and Middle Eastern cuisine are served. I was happy to be going to an Izakaya style restaurant that would have some vegetarian dishes. This was our favorite dinner experience in Tokyo. We walked in and were immediately delighted. The chef - owner greets you personally. The restaurant is filled with toys and beautiful ceramic dishes. He warned that there was not an English Menu. It does not matter. Just tell the chef whatever restrictions you have, and let him serve you creative, flavorful dishes. We had a meal of five courses, including the restaurants special vegetable pancake made with avocado and greens. It was incredible! The bakery next door is owned by the chef's wife. We picked up a round Turkish bread covered in sesame seeds. Delicious!

Vegans delight! 🌱 What a great find, if you’ve click on this place save it and go check it out! Really enjoyed the whole experience from the pink beard, to the turtles 🐢 and the food was to die for! Have no fear meat eaters there are options for you too! The menu is mainly vegan/veggie (i think anything can be made vegan) with lots of great options to choose from. Also I think they can do a lot of gluten free things also! This is a really interesting little shop I would highly recommend it. The owner is very eccentric, extremely entertaining and passionate about the food! All the the vegetables are locally scored, organic and I think from what he said home grown if can be! Also if you like turtles you will like this place there are hundreds of them... literally! Oh, and if you like pottery/ceramics the guys friends have made all the dishes/cups/bowls it’s a very nice experience to see and eat off all these beautiful things! Enjoy 🌱

one of my favorite food experiences ever! the interior is eclectically decorated and has so much character. the two owners were so deeply welcoming and truly made me feel at home. it is hard to describe how good the food was, prepared with so much attention and care in order to really bring out the flavors of simple ingredients. this restaurant exemplifies the way i wish food was related to everywhere. highly recommend to everyone!

For our last meal in Japan, we wandered into this eccentric and mysteriously located place via Happy Cow, and were greeted by a man sporting a kimono and a pink beard. He was - without a doubt - the most personable host we had at any of the restaurants we experienced during our trip. Since the menu was only in Japanese, I told him that I trusted him to make whatever he wanted; and he was mindful of various dietary restrictions. He proceeded to cook us up an amazing and one-of-a-kind Okonomiyaki with a few delicious side dishes. We toured his party room and hung out with his regulars. His ginger ale is house made and takes two days to make! So good! He showed us out after the meal and waved as we walked back to the station. The experience was totally worth missing the Narita express!

Overall: 4/5 ========= Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Experience 5/5 Cleanliness 4/5 Price 3/5 This elusive restaurant amazingly (and luckily!) managed to survive since almost 2 decades in the centre of a very dynamic metropolis. Tokyo follows trends and the fact that Genki is still “in”, means something and is well deserved. The host is successfully making any meal here to be an unforgettable experience, not only by his exquisite food and signature dishes, but also with his ever changing outfits, and very diverse interior design. This ranges from kitsch with hundreds of little animal statues to memorabilia and paraphernalia. As one can imagine these are impossible to keep in an impeccable state and hence are dusty and somewhat sticky (which is the only comment I have). Dishes, cups, glasses are all clean, beyond concern. There is an English menu, but it is not complete and contains errors. Luckily there are friendly locals (thank you Dillon!) that help you in translating and making a perfect decision. There are plenty of vegan choices, which is the prime reason i came here. My food was absolutely fantastic and I truly enjoyed it. I had ordered what I thought to be much more than I would handle: potato salad avocado/cheese roll, (vegan) eggplant okonomiyaki. Potato salad was unique and not comparable to anything I had before (5stars), the avocado/cheese roll was great (only vegan cheese I had in all of Japan), the okonomiyaki was amazing with the delicate eggplant, vegan home made dough and fried crispy sweet potato (?) on top. Only “problem” was that I wanted more soy mayonnaise, so also 5 stars. And they have great home made drinks too, the ginger ale is strongly recommended. The pricing (with 500yen cover charge, extra 10% commission) was the only thing that seemed a slight mismatch for the portion sizes, since I spent twice the amount I spent on any other dinner in other restaurants (with 2 main courses or 3/4 appetisers and a main). In conclusion, I would definitely recommend visiting Genki since the food is excellent and it is a memorable experience in a unique hallmark of Tokyo cuisine. I would definitely go back!

We went here because they have both meat and vegan options. Prices are quite expensive. Squash also expensive and way too sour to enjoy. My vegan friend asked for the chefs recommendation, but we made it clear it was only for one person. He ended up making her 3 dishes (way more than we wanted to pay for), so we had to share. The potato salad was delicious. Everything else was really bad. We were served the chefs speciality which was served 30 minutes after everything else. It was a mess of all sorts of ingredients that do not go together. A vegetable pancake (which I usually love) that was soggy and didn't taste good. Topped with hot strawberries, carrot flakes and a lot of sour brown sauce that made it completely inedible. I ordered the chicken and eggplant. The chicken was so tough i couldn't chew through it. It had almost no marinade and the flesh was dark purpleish. Ended up paying 7800 for two people, and we barely ate anything because it was so bad. The decoration is fun but dirty and definitely not worth it. Plus there's a cover charge for sitting.

We had so lovely evening over there. The boss made up himself for Christmas, he is so good chef, you must take his recommended dishes. The little hut is well decorated with lots of traditional Japanese stuffs. The dishes are not only Vegan, but also you can find beef and chicken. We all love the vegan dishes especially raw eggplant salad 👍

Plenty of vegan options. I’d recommend getting a couple of the grilled veggies. The owner is also very friendly and shared a drink with us. The decor is charming with little knickknacks strewn throughout the restaurant and covering almost every inch of it. This was definitely a rare find and would recommend to people looking for a unique experience!

This was a super fun experience- I got the vegan options only. The bar is kitchy, the chef and his wife are super sweet and goofy, and the food is tasty. For me the homemade ginger ale and potato salad were solid 10/10. The portions are large. I also got the okonomiyaki, not bad but not the best I’ve had in Japan. Would definitely visit again. FYI it’s cash only.

It was a very unique and pleasant vegetarian food experience for me. Especially that I sat next to the chef. I could watch how skilful and joyful was the chef. He enjoyed cooking for others very much. The food was special and kind of fusion. We did not know what to order as there was no English menu. The chef just cooked what he felt like serving. We paid JPY8,500 for 2 pax inclusive of 1 drink each. The chef and wife are happy people. Overall it was a a nice and memorable visit.

It’s rare to find a fun Japanese izakaya with such a large selection of vegetarian and vegan options. The food is excellent, the decor is wackily jovial, and the whole experience is unlike any other place in Tokyo. I do wish the seating was more comfortable, though.

Authentic, unique and curiously vegan! This was a great find! As a vegan you don’t get to try some of the delicious flavours of Japan….until now! The okonomiyaki was delicious using a home made egg replacer to bind the delicious flavours together! Lots of great options, you will leave satisfied!

Genki is amazing. Hands down the best meal we had in Tokyo. Everything from the decor to the food to the owners was a fantastic experience. The food was so good that we only remembered to take 1 picture because we were so excited to eat. They have an English menu available and a LOT of vegetarian and vegan options. I'd recommend trying to make a reservation at least the day before. We were lucky we got to walk in at 8pm for two seats on the counter. After the meal the owners personally saw us off outside the restaurant which ended the evening on an even higher note than the meal left us at.

Coolest vegan restaurant!!! The inside decor is an incredible collection of toys, figurines and collector's items from almost 20 years of running the place... The owners are outgoing, social and easy going ~ good vibes and service! It's a bit cramped inside but the atmosphere and food are really great. Especially nice to enjoy an entirely vegan dinner in Japan, which is so rare and treasured! Really enjoyed my experience. Highly recommended 👌🏼 (Bonus points for the extra large sized lobster slippers 🦞😆)

We had an amazing experience at Yasai Izakaya Genki. Although the menu was only in Japanese, we knew they catered well for vegetarians and vegans, so asked the owner to make some of his recommendations for us. The dishes were amazing - extremely tasty and fresh, made right before our eyes on the Teppanyaki hot plate. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, even with my very basic Japanese language skills. Highly recommended for vegetarians and vegans looking for an authentic traditional Izakaya experience with a unique and homely twist.
