Staying here for 5 days, I can honestly say the rooms are extraordinary on its own, and the Art of course is excellent and interesting. The staff speaks english really well, and they are really friendly, the bar is pretty good, and the ambience and clean lines and aesthetic of everything is just on point. It feels like a luxury place to stay but focused on art and in you having a nice time. The bathrooms are amazing and comfy, and big. The elevator is good and the wifi is standard. I am really happy and would love to stay for longer and try more rooms. My room was 302, which is a beautiful one with the animated wheel that spins really fast and gets illuminated. Noise wise, please watch it a few times and turn it off, it’s quite noisy.

We are really disappointed: - due to the room where you have to leave your clothes on the floor because there is nothing else but a bed… - we booked a full bed on purpose but we had twin beds. - due to the breakfast without buffet but only one choice (bread with avocado or ham) eveyday…, Only 1 drink coffee, milk or orange juice… breakfast from 8 (quite late) with schedules time that you have to let them know the day before… Interesting concept but only for 1 night. Not a real 4 stars for me!

An interesting concept hotel. Unfortunately there are too many quirky features that make the art room we stayed in uncomfortable. No bedside tables or an easy way to charge phone etc. No chairs or desk. (The bathroom was very good). Breakfast had to be ordered the night before, but the cafe does not open till 10am! The art comprised 5 TV screens that were always on and a low base hum of music. All too much for rest and sleep. Had to get the staff to turn them off 😕 Overall I found the design pretentious, with art taking priority over guest comfort.

A very interesting and fun hotel concept. Out of the 12 accommodations I stayed in during my travels in Japan, this was one of my favorites. The staff were all friendly and I got a helpful walkthrough of the room and amenities once I arrived. The room itself (I stayed in the Mizuguchi room) was unique and enjoyable for the 3 nights I spent in Kyoto. The location was excellent as well. I would love to come back and try out some of the other art rooms. The staff also went above and beyond to help me with a challenge I had encountered for my upcoming itinerary. Amazing hospitality.

Everything was great here. One thing I would point out that I'm not sure that either Expedia or the BnA website do a fantastic job of explaining (maybe just not in English) but while the hotel is an art hotel and the rooms are each art pieces, the rooms are also absurdly well appointed hotel rooms too. Like, it had everything I'd expect from a 4 star hotel, and it was an art piece you could explore. I didn't book multiple nights here (even though I had originally planned to do so) because I thought it may be lacking in some of the basic comforts I'd expect from a hotel on a long trip to a country I've never been before, but it had all of that and then some. TV? Check, even an active Netflix subscription. WiFi? Phenomenal speeds and stability. One of the best showers/non Jacuzzi style tubs I've ever use? You better believe it. And then on top of all of those things the view from the room I stayed in (EYE) was possibly one of the best I've ever had in a hotel. As I checked in the sun was setting over Kyoto, casting beautiful orange glows across the Gion neighborhood. A perfect view of the river out of the window next to the sofa. The hallway had floor to ceiling windows overlooking Kyoto including a view of the top of Kyoto tower. I won't spoil the art portion, I think that's worth experiencing for yourself, but even without the full blown gallery and art installation in the room itself this hotel was absolutely worth it.

Best hotel you will ever stay in. Please book if you love art. You’re becoming apart of the art by staying here. This was an amazing experience and I will be back to Japan to stay here again! Thank you for the amazing service, fantastic rooms, shop and cafe. I loved every second of my stay and that’s why I booked a second night! Support local artists and support this hotel.

Don't judge this hotel by using a business hotel standard or you will be disappointed. Each room is nicely designed or painted by artists and it is so much fun. Why not book different rooms to experience different designs. The hotel is also a stone throw away from the shopping hotspots in Kyoto.

Fabulous location and love the idea of supporting local artists. The room we were in had a round bed but mo headboard or chairs so after a few days was quite uncomfortable. Great stay for one or two nights though. Excellent bathroom. Great service. Very clean and bed was comfortable. Don't be put off by the 'nightclub' downstairs. It's more of a bar and we didn't hear any noise at all.

Super cool experience—perfect for art lovers. Really clean room and comfy beds. However, a few downsides: sometimes at night the hotel hosts events and the lobby smells like cigarette smoke (no smoking inside but it’s probably second hand) and you have to wade through the crowd to get to the elevator, occasionally the art overpowers the practical function of the room (e.g. objects hanging down from ceiling and dangling at eye level, having to be extra cautious near painted walls and sculptural elements in rooms), there is only one mirror in the rooms (in the bathroom).

We had an amazing time during our stay at the hotel - the room was spotless clean, the front desk staff were very welcoming and friendly! It takes just a few minutes to get to the city center and the location couldn't have been better (convenience store right across the street as well). There was even an music event going on at the hotel, which was really fun and interesting as well - highly recommend staying here, will come back for sure to stay in one of their other amazing art rooms!

I have to start by admitting the I can be quite picky when it comes to food and lodgings. That being said, I loved this hotel! Each room is designed by a local artist and totally different from the others. We stayed on the too floor in a room designed by a DJ with a dark decor and hip style. The room and bathroom were quite large. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Location was ideal - quiet, but a 5-10min walk from of nightlife and great dining options. Loved it! Total steal from 200ish per night.

Amazing art rooms. The hotel is also located in such fantastic location! I stayed in the 904 room, and it had one of the best views of Kyoto. Don't miss their omakase deals!

This is an amazing concept and we need more hotels like this. The D/R/M room was very cool, but I was sad that we couldn't take any pictures / videos of the art inside of it because it was quite phenomenal. Hotel itself is in a great location, clean amenities, and the art is great. Would definitely stay again and try a different art room that can actually be photographed.

We only had coffee here in the 2nd floor cafe but this alone was excellent. Funky arty space. The GF bar looked interesting and all the vibes about the hotel are good. We would stay next time we are in Kyoto.

A museum and at the same time a hotel. Exciting quite big rooms with beautiful bath rooms. It is fun to sleep with unique art in the comfortable beds. Staff is lovely and speaks god english. They have a very good healthy breakfast and a nice bar with drinks and craft beer. Very recommended!

Decent location. Nice staff. Bathrooms are nice. Hotel is clean. However, we ended up with an auditory room (or whatever it’s called). All this translates to is we were in a pitch black room where I lost one glove and many socks. Can’t see anything in there. Beyond that, while the soundtracks were cool, I didn’t go to Kyoto to sit in my hotel room with my eyes closed for hours while listening to nature tracks. Absolutely overpriced in my opinion. Perhaps had we been assigned a different room, our experience would have been better, but alas- rip to my black beanie.

It's a very cool hotel! Cafe is also amazing. Some of the best coffee and matcha we've tried in the area.

Amazing concept, very nice and helpful staff. The hotel is very nice and clean. Unfortunately we didn’t have many options for breakfast but at least the coffee was great. Our room was designed in such a unique way so just being in the room was an experience for us :) I’m sure we will come back!

Stayed in the Continum room 504. It was so spacious and comfortable and had lovely views. The staff were warm and very welcoming. We'll be staying here again ♡

Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Hotel is in a great location, room was quite large by Japanese standards and we had a lovely view over the river. Breakfast was really nice, avo & mushroom baguette (also a ham option), with corn soup & a drink. Would recommend to stay here.

Great hotel with really unique rooms. In our room we were able to add to the artwork by sticking a 5p coin up on the wall. Very friendly staff that made us feel welcome .

Good location overall and reasonable value for money for Japan. Love the concept. Rooms are very tight on space (granted we were there with 2 kids), reflective of the really narrow building. Not a cupboard in site. No clothes washing facility. Nice bathroom. Shame the cafe was closed during our stay. A nice grinder and espresso machine sitting idle. I would have made myself an espresso if given the chance. No reason given for this. Beds comfy enough. Staff are friendly and accommodating.

Excellent hotel to stay in. Rooms are big and very artsy, centrally located, less than 10 min walk to Gion district and the breakfast is good. Highly recommended

Trendy hotel with spacious rooms that are also works of art. The staff are all very helpful, friendly, and accommodating. They even offered to let us stay in different rooms each night to experience the other artworks. Will stay again when i return to kyoto.

The coffee is amazing! Museum is equally good to look around. If you want the coffee... coffee base is on the second floor. Stairs are on the right as you walk through. Must visit. It's worth the walk down to Kyoto Station we stayed further north from the main station.

Nice to support artists and my room was well designed in an aesthetic sense. The hotel staff were very nice and friendly. The event staff were kind of presumptuous and rude (“big mistake, huge.”). The breakfast cafe staff got my order mixed up with someone else’s even though she double checked right when I ordered if the ingredients for my order were available and the chef confirmed. Also I and the person she mixed up my order with were not easily confused - I as single foreign women on one of the cafe and he a Japanese man in a group on the other side, but that’s the general pattern I’ve found of service in japan and worldwide these days, so can’t be helped. Also there could be some changes to the design of my room (galapagos danchi), mainly there are very bright lights right by the window of the stairwell and there is just a regular curtain to cover it which doesn’t work. So I did not sleep well because it was very bright in my room all night from this, even though the modular unit blocks it a little bit. Since there are opaque sliding doors on the other windows, it would make a lot more sense to put one on that window too instead of just a curtain then it would be easier to sleep and it would go with the room Decor more too. Also this might be my mistake but I thought there was a bath in every room but my room only had a shower. Maybe I should have checked the details more. And maybe because the tatami mats were installed by visual artists and not craftsman, some were loose/sinking in and made kind of scary noises. But that was fine once I realized where the noise was coming from lol. Overall I would recommend it but I’m glad I just stayed one night since I wasnt able to sleep well that night

We booked the only room left - the “Travelers Room”. It’s exactly like the photos advertised. I wish I would’ve emailed them asking if the lights could be turned on, because all of the photos were dark. As it turns out, there is no additional lighting. It was incredibly annoying not being able to see. We literally had to use the flashlight on our phones to see at night. During the day it was sunny so we could see better through the small windows but had to use phone lights to look through our luggage. Also, there was only a small mirror in the bathroom so if a mirror is important to you, you won’t get one here. It seems that this hotel is only really intended for visitors to stay one night. Because it’s “art” there is no accommodation for luggage, there’s no TV, there’s no night stand, and you’ve got to get creative about plugging in devices. The bar in the lobby was lame. On the positive, the breakfast was great! The service at breakfast was a highlight! It’s in a quiet part of town with great food and bars. Just a 10 minute walk to busy Nishiki Market & Gion. There’s a laundromat just a few minutes walk also. If the price is right, there is great value in staying here, Just make sure you book the right room.
