Lovely place to visit for fall leaves. Driving was easy to the dam. You can either walk 30 mins through the tunnels for 2km each way or take the bus for 640 JPY round trip per person. Buses ran frequently. It was really cold so we opted for the electric bus. The bus stopped at the half way point to point out the 9 tier waterfall and the gorge. Beautiful scenery. Once you get to the actual dam you can walk on top of the dam for beautiful views. The viewing platform can be accessed by a short funicular or by 5 min walk. The restaurant and also restrooms are also up there.

Really gorgeous, can be done in an hour not inclusive of the time to get here. We came here in summer instead of autumn which is the most popular time for the autumn foliage. The temperature here in July was 16°C! The restaurant here only opens in September but there are a few drink vending machines. There are toilets in the car park and also at the same level as the dam.

Nice place for tourist. In Autumn, you can see the mountain covered by autumn leaves. You need to take the bus to the outside car park and take their electric car inside. There is a cable car but the queue is very long. There is a tourist center but only Japanese available. I will visit again.

A high and huge dam in Hokkaido stands 102.5 meters tall and was completed in the year 1972. Hoheikyo Dam is located inside Shikotsu Toya National Park and an admission fee is required to visit the dam. Visitors will have to hop onto the electric bus service provided to arrive at the dam. Alternatively, visitors can take a 2km walk through a tunnel to arrive at the dam. No cars, motorcycles, or bicycles are allowed between the 2km from the dam entrance to the dam due to the environmental protection area. At the dam, there is a restaurant with nice view that serves Barbeque lunch. Overall view of the dam was nice but nothing too spectacular.

Hōheikyō Dam, nestled in the scenic Toyohira Gorge near Sapporo, is a marvel of engineering and natural beauty. Completed in 1973, the dam not only serves as a vital water resource but also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and river. The expansive reservoir formed by the dam creates a serene environment, ideal for leisurely boat rides or simply enjoying the picturesque landscape. The dam's observation deck provides a stunning vantage point, especially during autumn when the foliage adds vibrant hues to the panorama. Hōheikyō Dam stands as a testament to the seamless integration of infrastructure and nature, making it a worthwhile visit for both engineering enthusiasts and nature lovers.

We had the luck to come here when koyo was at its fullest. Even with the gray weather we caw what can only be described as perfection. Trees with all different leaf colors in a naturally organized way gives you the impression that nature is incredible. Once you arrive at the parking lot by bus, try to walk through the tunnels instead of waiting in the gigantic line for the electric microbuses. You will have the opportunity to stop in between the tunnels to one of the best spots to see koyo in the whole place!

Gorgeous place during the autumn. If you are driving, most telephone numbers do not work for this area for GPS. Advise to read the road sign as in the older days. We bought meal+electrical bus tickets, which is 1300yen per pax. The meal was enjoyed in the Dam, fair food. But the combo is of reasonable price.

Great view of the dam. Good for families with an easy trail to the observatory. Only accessible by taxi (~1600 yen per ride. Can ask for a ride at tourist center/ hotel ) during the low season like summer.

Great views of the gorge and lake. You have to take an electric bus from the parking lot to the top of the dam. It costs about 600yen, but you are allowed to walk the distance if you do not want to pay. There are two tunnels that you have to pass through to get to the dam. The best time of year is the fall when the leaves are changing color, but worth a visit in the spring and summer as well.

Very good spot for sightseeing during autumn/fall period. Can be accessed through a shuttle from Hoheikyo Onsen. However, when returning, please be aware of the shuttle time table in order not to be passed by the list bus.

A truly amazing experience in autumn. A highlight of our time in Hokkaido. It can be a bit busy in peak times, but the car park is big and there is a shuttle bus to the damn for a small fee. Otherwise the walk is only 2km but mainly through a tunnel. The damn, spillway, valley and trees were all amazing on a sunny autumn day. There were many other people attending but there was plenty of space to spread out.

Nearest car park to the Hoheikyo Dam, just a short distance away from the electrical tram boarding stop. Free Parking and volunteers are on site during peak period to guide you.
