旧豊後森機関庫には懐かしい昭和の雰囲気のなか、SLも保存展示されています。
旧豊後森機関庫脇に駐車場があればいいのですが、徒歩5分程度離れた豊後森駅側にあります。
旧豊後森機関庫は、蒸気機関車が大量の水を必要とすることから、久大本線の開通に合わせて開設され、水の補給とともに機関車の収容、管理などを行う中継施設としての重要な機能を果たしました。このため、太平洋戦争の開戦とともに軍事輸送拠点となり、終戦直前の8月4日、米軍機からの機銃掃射を受け、死者重軽傷者が出ました。その時の弾痕がいまも機関庫の明かり窓などに残っています。
重要な機能を果たしていた機関庫も蒸気機関車からディーゼル車に代わっていくなかでその役割を終えました。機関庫が現存するのは全国でも数カ所。かつ、規模が大きく転車台が残るのは極めて珍しいと言われています。このように旧豊後森機関庫は日本の鉄道の歴史を物語るうえで貴重な機関庫であるとともに、戦争の痕跡を残す遺構としても長く保存してもらいたい施設であると思います。
