Beautiful all around, well-deserved spot on 1 of the 3 best waterfalls in Japan! View is breathtaking, sound is powerful and the overall gorge/waterfall/forest combination makes it truly a sight to behold! The elevator down is worth the ride - you ‘ll ‘feel’ the waterfall way better, and perhaps get a little sprinkled. Regardless of taking the elevator or not, it’s really a sight to behold!

It costs ¥570 to take the elevator down to the falls. The three levels on the observation deck was plenty of space but the bottom one had the best view. The rock formations were breathtaking and the waterfall looked surreal

Beautiful even in the winter time. Very quiet with little to no one there. I was easily able to incorporate this into a day trip from Tokyo using the Tobu buses. Highly recommend to see!!

Beside Kegon waterfall, don't miss the sightseeing boat cruise at Chuzenji Lake too! You will be amazed. It's really worth an hour trip to watch these beautiful red leaves scenery. Visited: Oct 26, 2023.

From my travel diary "It was cold, and we finally had lunch. We then set of for and area called Lake Chuzenji. It is about 40 minutes from Nikko by bus and a long winding mountainous drive indeed. It is very high and when we got out at Chuzenji-onsen stop it was freezing. The lake was formed 15000 years ago by a volcanic eruption and leads to a water fall. We took a lift down a tunnel that goes for 100 meters and from where we could view the frozen Kegon Falls". What an adventure

Beautiful falls- I would imagine it looks great in every season! Not too taxing of a walk. There is an elevator to take you to the viewing area, but there are stairs to climb to the different levels. There are shops, food vendors, and restrooms in the immediate vicinity. There is also paid parking in several different areas.

Super nice, but was snowing today. Made a snowball! Watched water flowing strongly over the cliff edge. Got strawberry ice cream. Lake is nice view. Big and peaceful. Very winding roads up and down - drive carefully!

Beautiful waterfall. Short walk from parking to the lookout. We went during December so we caught a glimpse of snow and waterfall. If your on the nikko bus tour, it is definitely worth the stop.

Truth be told, I was crestfallen as we approached Kegon Falls. A rainy fog covered the top of the observation deck and I asked my mum if she'd still like to pay for a descent to the paid area. She agreed and it was actually a blessing in disguise. After paying ¥570 each, we went down after a busload of students past some slope and stairs. It was just foggy all around and I took some photos in hope to see some form of shape of Japan's top three waterfalls. After the energetic kids left the area, we entered the souvenir shop to grab a fridge magnet (our family tradition for travel keepsake) to capture Kegon Falls in its majesty. Perhaps it was the kami's answer to our prayers because when we stepped outside, the fog lifted and the grand waterfall revealed herself to us! I set up our tripod before another group of kids arrived, shouting and screaming at the reveal of the waterfall. Lucky them and us! This is going to be my favourite memory of this trip!

A breathtaking spot, I would have stayed there the whole day, even it was foggy and it was difficult to see the full view of the waterfall. You can see a complex of waterfalls and a nice running river in sunny day, also the best time to visit is during autumn, the colour mix of trees and waterfall is unmatched. You can enjoy the water fall for free from view point having 2 floors, or you can enjoy more realistic and more closer look if you go to the lower view point through elevator for about extra 500 yen if I still remember, this is also a great solution if you were unlucky and there was fog, you can check the live screen and go to the bottom view point to have a better view. Anyway, plan your trip well, and make sure that it is sunny at the waterfall area. Access: use bus from Nikko station, there is a good cheap full 2 day bus pass from Nikko station, don't miss it, you may some money.

Must visit place during autumn in Nikko. It’s absolutely mesmerizing. One day trip to Nikko from Tokyo is best to spend a weekend or any consecutive holidays. Very easily accessible from Tokyo Asakusa station via Tobu Nikko line, there are passes available which could be chosen accordingly.

Amazing! A few different angles so make sure you find the walkable observation deck from the top, as well as the elevator observation deck. The elevator does not allow dogs. Parking is available but during busy seasons, it’s better to find a spot further from the site. We waited over an hour to turn into the parking lot during the 2022 fall season. There are 2 lots for the falls themselves, but also many others so do a Google map search for them.

I went in October so the water level was not too high and I had a chance to catch one bottle of water 😜hahaha. Anyway, it’s an amazing waterfall and you can enjoy the sound of waterfall’s waves. They have a nice elevator 🛗 so you don’t need to tracking. But if you love tracking then you can also find some way to go there, I am not sure. Anyway, I’m gonna to rate it 9/10.

Incredible views especially in winter!! I was wondering if the steep price of the elevator was worth it (570 yen), but it absolutely was!! 3 viewing platforms to choose from with dramatic views of the falls from the bottom.

Deserving of its spot in Japan's top 3 waterfalls. Absolutely amazing. It's worth taking the elevator - which was built in 1930s - to the basin. You don't want to miss this if you are visiting Nikko!

Kegon Waterfall, or 華厳滝 (Kegon Taki) in Japanese, is a breathtaking natural wonder nestled in the scenic Nikko National Park. Plunging 97 meters surrounded by lush greenery, it offers a mesmerizing spectacle for nature enthusiasts. The sheer height of the waterfall creates a captivating mist, adding a mystical aura to the surroundings. Visitors can appreciate the waterfall's grandeur from various viewpoints, with the most iconic being the Akechidaira Observatory. The observatory provides a panoramic view of Lake Chuzenji and the surrounding mountains, enhancing the overall experience. The accessibility of Kegon Waterfall adds to its allure, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. A convenient elevator descends into the gorge, allowing visitors to witness the cascading water from different angles without strenuous hikes. The seasonal transformations further enhance the appeal, with vibrant foliage in autumn and a frozen spectacle in winter. The symphony of crashing water and the serene natural setting make Kegon Waterfall a serene retreat, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Overall, Kegon Waterfall stands as a testament to Japan's natural beauty, captivating the senses with its majestic presence.

The observation platform has 3 levels: worth checking all three levels given a small difference in the viewing angles provide a slightly different experience. Winter is not the best season to come as there’s much less water than it is in the summer. Still, it’s a really nice view that brings me a sense of calmness and peacefulness. Also really cool to see the shadows of the waterfall. Definitely recommend a visit!

A very beautiful waterfall. You go down an elevator to a viewing platform down the cliffs, to see the entirety of the falls. There are some food vendors outside as well as on the viewing platform during season (visited in winter and they were closed).

  • 3/5 Philip H. 4 years ago on Google
It's a waterfall. There is an elevator to a lower place where you can see a different view of the falls. It only seems to be there to get you to pay more money. It was nice, but paying 570 yen to take an elevator to see the same waterfall seemed a bit much to me.

Kegon Falls are beautiful falls at around 1,200m above sea level in the middle of a beautiful forest near Nikko. The autumn colours are beautiful from here. Make sure to also take the elevator down to the lower observation deck for an even more beautiful view of the falls.

Amazing place ! I know it’s just a waterfall but you’ll thank God once you see it with your own eyes ! The parking cost 320¥ and for the elevator going down adult 大人 is 570¥ and for children 子供 is 340¥ (the price is based on what I remembered) don’t forget to bring a jacket because it’s cold down there. If you want to see it in different look you can visit here every season 😊 and also there are food stall around, souvenirs and toilet. Hope this helps you 😌

I'm really mesmerized by looking at this waterfall.. I visited this place during the Autumn season(weekday). Even though it was more crowded than expected and a freaking cold day, Nikko's beautiful landscape made me forget all odds and thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening.. parking 🅿️ fee 320¥.. I could see many enjoying barbecue fish and baked sweet potatoes... I suggest everyone take the elevator which takes us 100mts down and enjoy the waterfall.. elevator view costs 570¥. this elevator has a history which is almost 90yrs old and quite big to fit almost 25people at a time..🇯🇵🇯🇵

This area is stunningly beautiful but sadly we had torrential rain all day which did limit the experience. Definitely somewhere to visit when the sunshine is shining. It is a popular place for visitors so can get busy. I believe it is the third highest waterfall in Japan. There is a lift that takes you to the bottom of the falls, but be aware that there is then a walk with steps in case of limited mobility.

Gorgeous falls, highly recommend the elevator in particular to have a view from the ground level. Do wish you could get closer to the falls, and you'll need to check the weather for fog (seriously, the first day we visited we could hear a tremendous waterfall, but literally couldn't see a glimpse). The nearby lake is beautiful and clear, but the clouds rolling over the mountains are a double edged sword. It makes it frequently mystical feeling, but also makes some days less than ideal. Again, check the weather.

This is a stunning location - especially as the trees are starting to turn. There are food stalls and gift shops here and it's quite nice walking around. You need to buy a ticket if you want to take the lift to the bottom of the falls. The only downside would be crowds. It wasn't too bad, but I can imagine long queues here when it is popular.

We went here first thing in the morning using the first few available buses at 6am on a Saturday to avoid crowds and the traffic. From Tobu Nikko station it takes about 45 minutes to the station close to the waterfall and Lake Chuzenji. If you go on a holiday or weekend, the bus ride can take up to 2-3 hours so be careful. From the waterfall back to Nikko station, at 9 am the traffic was already starting to get really bad that walking would be faster to go the station which we did. We hopped off and walked. The waterfall itself is very beautiful. You will ride an elevator that will go down 100 meters to see the waterfall better. Not much to do aside from picture taking but there are some local foods to try and souvenir shops to go to around the area. Highly recommended. It was cold near the waterfall so bring a jacket in case during autumn or spring.

It was awesome. There is a public view for free but I recommend you to take the elevator to be closer to the waterfall. Partially for the experience to go down. Kinda of unique. I took the elevator to the bottom to be nearer to the waterfall. It was really good view. You need to pay 570yen to go down.

I visited on the morning of January 29, Monday. From my experience it's better to visit this first since I heard the road to here can get quite congested during peak season (autumn). If you plan to also go to Akechidaira lookout / ropeway, go there first as it is a one way road. I come from a tropical country where waterfalls are fairly common, but Kegon falls in winter is such a beautiful sight. It's quiet with only a few tourists.

I love this place. From the observation deck, I face straight to the fall and the view is astounding. The air is full of vapor and fog mixing together, which makes the scene even more impressive. I didn't have a chance to take the elevator to the lower observation spot but I will definitely give it a try next time.

Awesome waterfall. The top platform gives you a great view and shows the length of the waterfall. Take the elevator down for 570yen and see the waterfall up close as well as the whole vallry, streams and other tiny details. Good photo oppurtunities and not too crowded. Lots of souvenir shops. (Translated by Google) I thought it would be the last summer vacation for working people, but it was a coronal disaster, but I went there. To be clear, I was anxious because the measures were insufficient. After all, the elevator had no special restrictions on the number of people, and normally a 2-digit number was used. I don't know if it's a guard or a staff member, but I wondered if it makes sense. When I get on, I hear the voice of a young person in the back saying "Is it still possible to ride?" Is it all right? When I think... And I was even more worried because there were more than half of the Tokyo numbers. Surprisingly, we can take measures against tourist spots! There are many things that are suspicious, but I thought there were many suspicious points. A majestic view especially in autumn. Just 5 minutes away on foot from its own parking lot (not for free). Viewing platforms are for free. Taking the elevator down to the waterfall’s bottom area isn’t for free but affordable. Lots of shops and restaurants around the area. You should visit on a weekday. The top observatory was pretty good already. Buying a ticket at the elevator was really easy even if you're not a Japanese speaker and the wait wasn't long for the lift either. They had a lot of food stalls and shops at the site and I recommend you guys to go there in the morning with an empty stomach. Since we drove there, the longest wait was only for the parking, it does have 2 lots to park at but there's always a wait especially in the morning, but was still a good experience overall.

This large waterfall is impressive, especially in a prefecture known for beautiful falls. There are two observation areas: the upper deck, which is free, and the lower deck which requires an elevator ride to access. The elevator has a fee to ride. We felt the beautiful views were worth visiting the lower deck, which actually has multiple levels. The gift shops only take cash, so be sure to have some on hand.

Such a beautiful waterfall and also soothing. The entrance fee is relatively cheap and the parking fee is very cheap. The best time to visit the place would be fall / autumn. Pretty good place to get away from city over the weekend. The fall is amazing in every season. Becomes specially attractive in fall season with son many colors changing around. Because it's so easily accessible from Tokyo or other nearby cities, it's always busy too. Specially in fall it's crowded. Recommend with caution.

  • 4/5 Lisa C. 9 months ago on Google
Cloudy overcast day, it was very foggy and we weren’t able to see much. I bet it would have been great. There are souvenirs and ice cream and cafes to grab a bite to eat. Not to far of a walk 10 mins walk to the Nikko beach and promenade walk and an observatory for a 180 view of the lake. The switch backs and views are amazing going up or down. Buy the Nikko bus pass from Tokyo and it’ll include train ride there and unlimited bus pass for 2 or 4 days in Nikko depending on which pass you buy. (Great deal if you have JR Pass but even better deal if you don’t). I purchased mine at Nikko Stn for 2300yen for 2 days use. (Goes as far as #26 attraction, anything beyond added fee) The other is double in price but it lasts 4 days and takes you further up on the route of attractions. The pass is worth it. Check it out at the Asakusa Visitor Centre.

It's not a bad place. You won't see anything in the fog, of course. But paying and taking the lift down is a moot point. I don't think it's worth it. You can look at the waterfall from above. It is beautiful in general.

Kegon is one of the big three waterfalls in Japan, located in Nikko which has lot other tourist spots as well. The location is convenient with few minutes access from nearby parking lot. Kegon falls offer different viewing angles, so make sure you visit both the stairs and also the elevator decending to 100 m down for perfect pictures. The elevator is connected with shoet tunnel to the observation deck, you can feel the cold breeze as soon as elevator door opens. On topside area , there are souvenir and snacks shops. Make sure to try lemon soft cream.

  • 5/5 Maciej P. 10 months ago on Google
You can see it for free from the top or pay some yen take the elevator to stand face to face with it and see some smaller ones around. It's really majestic and fascinating, definitely worth seeing if you came to the Nikko area. Shame you can't get closer to the base of it.

About a 10 minute walk from Chuzenji Onsen Bus Terminal. It was a pity that the weather was rainy and foggy on the day of our visit. We were not able to see the waterfall in its full majesty. One of the best waterfalls in Japan! The view was really amazing I was glad I went. Be sure to take the elevator down to the lower area and check out the gift shop. Even if you don’t take the elevator down you’ll still have a good experience though.

Toller Souvenir! 👌🏼

Very beautiful. Others are more spectacular (Yellowstone and Niagara, for simple examples). There were crowds, so patience is required.
