滝壺まで簡単に立ち入れる身近な滝である事から、通年多くの観光客が訪れますが、秋川の源流の沢の奥地にある
4段の滝は1段目の落差が26m、全段で合計60m、滝が僧侶の払子を垂らした様に似ている事から、かつては払子とも呼ばれていた。滝壺には大蛇が棲んでいたと伝えられていたそうです。
払沢の滝は紅葉のシーズンや厳冬期に美しく結氷する事でも有名ですが、檜原村で最大の観光名所である事からイベントも多く開催され、12~2月には『払沢の滝冬まつり』と題し、最大結氷する日を当てる『氷瀑クイズ』(近年は全面結氷する年は少なくなったそうですが、2006年1月8日に10年ぶりに全面結氷が記録されてます。)や、払沢の滝をモチーフに写真の腕前を競う『フォトコンテスト』も開催されています。また8月には檜原村最大のイベント『払沢の滝ふるさと夏まつり』が開催され、滝のライトアップや打ち上げ花火、特産品、屋台なども楽しめます。
駐車場から滝まではゆるやかな傾斜の遊歩道となっており、村の木で作られたウッドチップが敷かれているためフワフワと心地よく歩きやすくなっています。遊歩道の途中には、村の陶芸作家の作品を展示するギャラリー喫茶や、昔の郵便局の建物を利用したおしゃれな土産物店があり、滝と合わせて檜原村の文化を楽しめるスポットです。
滝付近の駐車場(駐車台数25台程度)は、ハイシーズン(連休や結氷時期など)には混雑が予想され、早い時間から満車となります。
