A small restaurant which needs to be entered by crossing through the small alley with other restaurants and then go up the stairs. I also figured out you can enter by coming from the back. Although the most popular restaurant in Nagoya for hitsumabushi had a waiting time for approximately 1 hour, I could directly be seated at this restaurant. 3 stars for the atmosphere, cause I still think, sitting on a barstool for a ¥4500 dish, is not how it should be. Speaking about the food, delicious! The portion is bigger than expected and I got the whole serving. I really enjoyed the food and tried all different options in means of eating, and the one when you have to add the broth to the fish is the least tasty one. Definitely something to try when in Nagoya!

For the foreigners, yes the entrance is not easy to find. Yes, you will reach a dark entrance building at the roadside. Yes, it appears there is a karaoke. Go down into the dark alley basement, and go right to the end, emerge out into the light and turn right, up the stairs. You will find a small, homely restaurant. Wait in the queue and someone will queue you into their waiting list. Enjoy the food. THE EEL IS BUSSIN!!!! side note: i have not had bottled coke for a long time, so be sure to order that, it tastes somehow better than my home country's.

Delicious food which worth waiting. There are very limited seats in the restaurant and they deliver meal one by one with unhurried tempo. However it is the best unagi hitsumabushi I’ve ever ate. 1/2 is enough for women(I can’t even finish it). Suggest to go before 11:00 and maybe you can enter without waiting.

Well, full of expectation but disappointed overall. First, the entrance is hard to find. But still finally got there at 6 pm at the time they open for dinner. Got lead to the table in 10 mins. However, after we ordered, it took them 50 mins to finally serve our food. I was starving badly and it just killed all the good mood. Stay in Nagoya just one night, Waste the whole hour waiting is unbelievable. The food in general is good. The eel is a bit over cooked so there's a bit bitter taste. But it's still good compared to any other country. Totally unable to communicate in English, Chinese, or Korean. Japanese only. No credit card, cash only. Terrible experience, never ever come back again.

Superb hitsumabushi! Hidden venue in a picturesque alley, small and cosy locales mostly attended by locals. I had the hana (花) set (26€): a generous bowl of perfectly cooked white rice, topped with eel aplenty (see picture!), herbs, freshly-ground wasabi, soup and an umeboshi for sides. Cold green tea complimentary. It all could have as well easily served two! Honestly, it was heavenly. The eel is de-boned, perfectly caramelized on one side, crispy skin-side. Best eel I ever had in my entire life, completely obliterates even the most delicious Unagi. A clean, characteristic venue and courteous staff top off the already great experience. Sterling job, 花岡!!!

Cozy little restaurant. A very nice old lady served us some really great grilled eel. The food was fantastic, however also pricy. I had the large portion for 4700 yen. We came early and had no problem getting a table, however, when we left people were queueing in front of the restaurant

My wife was reluctant cause she didnt like the texture of unagi on her first try but this shop was insanely good. Be sure to know the different ways of eating hitsumabushi beforehand for maximum experience. Personally i liked eating as it is but mixing and matching with condiments and tea was fun

A bit difficult to find the proper entrance but very worth it! Reservation is probably required as we got there just as they opened and they were completely full. We were there with a small child and the staff were super friendly and not at all bothered by this so don't worry if you have kids. The Nagoya style Hitsumabushi set was great. You can try the unagi with several different methods of preparation (which you do yourself). The standard unagi of course but also with other toppings (they provide an instruction set). The standard set was also quite nice. As we were going out, the proprietress came out to talk with us and ask us where we were from. Her son (one of the chefs) came by and showed us a live unagi, which my son had never seen before. They were super friendly throughout and we left not only full from the meal but also with a great experience overall. We can't wait to go back when we're in Nagoya again.

One of the best unagi i’ve ever had! The unagi was perfectly done with its skin being crisp and the meat soft. There are four combinations to eating the unagi set so it was quite interesting tasting the different flavours. Prices are not cheap but worth it for the great taste. The restaurant is a little hard to find being in an alley and up at second level, also the place is cosy with small seating so waiting time can be long during peak hours.

This was one of my favorite meals ever, literally. It almost made me cry while eating and I was genuinely emotional when finishing the meal. The eel was easily the best I’ve ever had, and everything surrounding it- the rice, toppings, broth- were fantastic as well. Staff were kind and helpful, with english on the menu now available. I usually eat a large amount and was happily full with the 1 full portion option A little tricky to find and a bit of a wait(30 min sat dinner), but well worth it.

A quaint place with comfortable seats and ambience! There are no english menus, but the staff was very friendly and very willing to try and decipher what we were trying to order! Very thankful to the wonderful staff! 🙏🏻 We ordered the small bowl of Unagi don, and although it’s a little pricey (~¥2700), the taste was fantastic! Will definitely return when I’m back to Nagoya!

This shop is family managed and the staff are very nice. The Eel rice is very tasty and even 1/2 portion is good enough for one person. Many local customers here!

U think u had unagi don before? No u haven't, not until u have come to Nagoya. My research told me that there were 2 famous food in Nagoya, 1 is chicken wing, 2 is unagi. And I thought both of these food are just every normal dishes can be served in Japan, how wrong was I? I was blown away by the chicken wing the night before and then again by the unagi. I don't know about other unagi shops in Nagoya, but this one changed my whole unagi concept. I had never had such a big crunchy, fatty, juicy unagi in my life. The sauce is well balance, rice is nice and soft by perfect texture. The new way of this Nagoya dish to me is that it comes with the soup and u put the rice in the extra bowl with the spring onions and wasabi in, mix it with the soup then eat it with the unagi. It is just simple heaven for such a simple dish. (when I said simple, I know they have gone through so many sophisticated steps to make this dish into our plate.)

Food was awesome ! Better book table in advance otherwise may need to wait for a long time. Small restaurant with limited no. Of seat and the seat is not comfortable at all

Took the chance to try this out after reading reviews. I went on a Tuesday night at 8pm and I was shown to a table as soon as I popped in. There wasn’t any crowd, 1 customer per table of 5 so I was lucky. Ordered 1 serving of hitsumabushi set and it exceed my expectations! Serving was generous, eel was crispy and the taste elevate on different ways of eating it. Staffs were amazing although they can’t speak English, they were so welcoming and tried their best to communicate. Highly recommended for the best food experience!

Best hitsumabushi I’ve eaten in my life. There are nice ones in Singapore but nothing compares to this :) The unagi was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I love how shiso leaves and ume are used as condiments as well. Will head back to Nagoya just to have this again! Bonus: the restaurant was playing ABBA music on loop while I was there. Loved it.

The best ひつまぶし I had! Unagi grilled to perfection, generous portions. I love eating it with the fresh wasabi and shio leaf. Try all 4 ways of eating it and I guarantee you a gastronomic experience.

The best unagi rice we ever had! It was SO GOOD. Crispy on the outside and soft inside. It’s a tiny restaurant, not easy to find, and not cheap too. But worth it!

Best hitsumabushi in Nagoya!! You can choose the portion of eel (from small to very big) but the set includes the same things, eel on rice with toppings, osuimono, tsukemono. All the combinations are delicious. I also recommend the yuzu sorbet at the end. There are instructions and menu in English! Negative points: the entrance is not easy to find, you may have to wait if you don't have reservation and they accept only cash!

Perfectly grilled unagi with cripsy skin and a good balance of smoky taste. my favorite is to eat with the pickled plum, condiments and soup stock. Definitely will choose to wait in line for this than other famous Hitsumabushi in Nagoya that I have tried

Very delicious. One of the best, you have to wait an hour if you come at peak hour.

I highly recommend to try Hitsumabushi in this restaurant. It was first time Hitsumabushi for me and tasted fantastic. Outside is very grilled crunch and inside is fluffy. Also, you can try four different way to eat. My favourite is number four. Perfectly match with Umeboshi. And size. It's hard to decided which size is good. We order Hana Hitsumabushi 3/4尾 and it's not too much it's not less. Perfect portion for us. If you love to eat Jou Hitsumabushi 一尾, but normal food portion is perfect 3/4尾. Hard part was waiting time. We arrived at 18:30 on Wednesday but it's already waiting 10group of people. So we waited for a hour. But this restaurant one of my Nagoya friend recommend me so I'm glad I did it. It's worth it.

This is completely the resturant you must visit if you want to get eel. Not only tasty but also large volume. I recommend you make a reservation before visiting.

👍👍 Very nice high end department store in the heart of Nagoya. My kids love coming here especially for the Pokemon Store. They have gourmet/specialty food section on the lower level B1 and B2. I still love coming here in 2023.

👍👍 Arrived at 11:30 but because of the volume of customers, I was asked to come back at 1PM. Not a problem though as Atsuta Shrine was just nearby so spent my waiting time there. Once seated, I ordered their famous hitsumabushi which is grilled eel with rice and can be enjoyed in 3 ways (see photos):...

😐 I brought my mom here when she visited Japan. It was kind of embarrassing and quite expensive, 10,000 yen for 1 hour for 4 of us. We got a parfait, a key holder, a drink, and a picture with one of the maids.
