It is famous for being the closest elementary school to the hypocenter, located on the opposite bank of the main river that runs beside Peace Park. A small portion of the school building from that time has been preserved as a museum, where you can listen to the stories of the volunteers. It was also the model (read differently) for the elementary school that appeared in Barefoot Gen. The Atomic Bomb Museum, which tends to be the main attraction, is worth a visit, but we also recommend visiting this elementary school and the Peace Museum at Fukuromachi Elementary School. You can get a glimpse of a sad part of history.

The elementary school where “Barefoot Gen” was set is now open as a peace museum The site of an elementary school that was completely destroyed by the American military's atomic bomb, a weapon of mass indiscriminate killing at the end of the Pacific War, is open to the public free of charge as a museum that tells the story of that tragedy. It's a 3-minute walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome, so you might want to visit it as well. A facility built with the strong desire to never repeat a war in which so many innocent civilians were slaughtered. In 1928, 10 teachers and 400 children were killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima City's first three-story reinforced concrete building. The school building at that time was demolished, leaving only a part intact, and a new elementary school was built on this site.

When I saw the atomic bombed school building, I couldn't express my feelings in words. I strongly felt that we must preserve this fact and this space and pass it on to the next generation. I admire the extraordinary thoughts and efforts of the people of Hiroshima who have left us a legacy. (You can tour for free) Don't forget. There's no way I can forget it.

Although the name is a museum, it is not just about displaying materials. The elementary school building itself is a reference material. I was impressed by the legacy he left behind for future generations. This is a place you should visit along with Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum. I was surprised to see the original of the atomic bomb memorial and inscription here.

There was a place like this. It looks like it was the setting for Barefoot Gen. Only two people survived here at that time. One teacher and one female student. It has been preserved as it was at that time. There is no parking lot, so go to a nearby coin parking lot. This is a place you should visit together with the Peace Memorial Museum.

If you are dedicating a whole day for the Memorial Park, then it's important to remember about this place, which is just a minute walk from the park and tell history of a school, which was standing there during bombing. Exhibition is located in a part of old building of the school, which survived explosion.

1 minute walk from Honkawacho tram station. There is no parking lot. The cenotaph in front of the museum was beautifully decorated with flowers. When I asked questions to the receptionist, she was happy to talk to me. I would like to visit again someday. It was built in July 1928 (Showa 3), so it will be 100 years old in just 5 years! This museum should be preserved. It's easy to tear down a building, but you can't build the same thing twice. I want it to be preserved for future generations.

Please come and visit this school. Mr Aoki Sama is very welcoming and cheerful. Teaches us many information on what has the school went through. Please ring the buzzer as the gate is always closed! 👍🏻

Google Maps probably showed the elementary school's business hours, and it said it was closed on Sundays. However, it was open on Sundays as well. We highly recommend visiting this place along with the Peace Memorial Museum and Fukuromachi Elementary School. Although there aren't that many exhibits, they are very vivid and moving. My eyes were glued to the glass bottle, which had melted and crumbled from the heat with its contents still inside. I also saw the life of the only survivor of this elementary school, and learned that the victims of war are always innocent ordinary people.War is a stupid and extremely wasteful act. I strongly believed that it was. I found the red sphere floating in the diorama of Hiroshima city at the time in the basement very frightening.
