The lodging is operated by a couple, with great hospitality. The pictures that are uploaded by other guests properly depicts the facilities. The house itself is visibly an older building, but it can be seen at first sight that the owners take real good care of the building both inside and outside. The rooms themselves (at least the one I slept in) carry the necessary furniture for a good night's rest, and in the common room you can eat, watch TV, talk to the other guests, etc. The entire house has a rustic air, loved the feeling very much. The kitchen is also well equipped with kettle, water heater, pans, sink, whatever you need to whip up a quick meal. The best part though is the hospitality of the owners. As soon as I arrived, the owner took out a map, showed me the local sights and his recommendations, how to get there, which buses to use, told me about the daily bus ticket, and all-around was a nice person. Later when I asked him about the local public baths and he knew that I had no soap on me, lent me one. Since the house is also a ~10min walk from the station, gave me a lift to the station when I was returning to Tokyo, so hospitality-wise the best place I've ever been to. The only thing that should be taken into consideration is the shower and toilets being kinda outside (but on a covered inner yard, and of course privacy is given), but it is not as cold as you would think. Also the toilet seats are the automatic heated kind, so you won't have problem with cold seat during your morning ritual either. If you still have some qualms about the shower being semi-outside, there are several public bathhouses nearby, some literally a corner away. So I definitely recommend the place, I'll come here again if I can return to Kyoto anytime in the future.

The owner was extremely nice. Upon arrival he took 15 minutes to give us lots of advice about where to go and what to see in Kyoto, complete with maps and directions. The accommodations were modest but adequate. Would definitely recommend to any travelers looking for a more home-y stay.

One and only experience you can go for if you are visiting Kyoto with friends. We were so glad we found GuesthouseBon. + Host is amazing he will show you around etc. + We even borroved bicycles from him + Big space you get for that price + All clean when we came. At top of that he cleaned our apartment every day. + Nice and polite Fun fact, we left a lot of mess when we were leaving for our bycicle trip in the morning. When we came back it was all clean... we were planning to clean it all before checking out but our host Kazuo-san was faster. But most hilarious whing we found was our plushie was in bed ready for nap. Check photo.

My Girlfriend and i stayed 1 week at Guesthouse Bon, IT WAS AMAZING!!! A real authentic Japanese experience, with the most amazing helpful host. The room was perfect size for the both of us, i would say more on the bigger size for Japan, with really cold a/c great for summer fully equipped kitchen, we even got some cooking lessons from the host :) showers and bathrooms great and super clean as everything was. Location is great, really nice traditional streets, close to busses and train is about 10 mins walk. also you can use their bikes to ride around! If you're in Kyoto (don't go AirBnb or hotel) STAY AT GUESTHOUSE BON!!

First it's quiet and clean, that's the most important for a good sleep (I've seen the futon refreshed before new arrival). Then it's well located, and the owner is a very kind person who is helping you all the time. He speaks a good English and really gives you fantastic advice. I've slept in 3 different places in Kyoto and it was definitely the best for me.

So beautiful experience with the owners, so greatful and nice people. They help you for everything. The guesthouse is a typical old japanese house. A wonderful experience you have to go there some days.

We stayed two nights in mid-December. We loved this place so much. It was a very lovely house. The service and the hospitality from the owner were perfect. Well communicated in English. There is an onsen near by if taking showers were too cold in the bathroom during winter. The onsen is clean and easy to reach. A very nice tofu shop just cross the street and they sell the best inari sushi that I have had in this entire trip. Overall we had a really nice experience in staying in Kyoto this time. Would love to come back :)

Traditional Japanese house that is very well maintained and an excellent value. I was very impressed by the owner's effort to help his guests and make them feel welcome. He works really hard for his clients and definitely goes the extra mile. Would highly recommend staying here!

We absolutely loved our stay at Guest House Bon. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and very clean. The hospitality was excellent. The owner was very helpful in planning our daily activities and he was well communicated in English. We borrowed bicycles from the guesthouse one day and explored the nearby temples and bamboo forest, which was amazing! There’s also an onsen close by, that was really nice. I can’t recommend this place enough! It’s a bit outside the city center, but we enjoyed the quiet and didn’t mind the bus ride. I will definitely stay here again! Thank you so much!

Informal and affordable accommodation in a quiet yet convenient part of town, away from tourist bustle. Taniguchi-san is an incredibly kind and easy going host with local knowledge. Both the guesthouse and rental house present good value and have the feel of life in a traditional Kyoto home. The rental house is better for families. The guesthouse offers cheap bike rental, a great way to get around in Kyoto. You can also leave your bags should you wish to make an excursion elsewhere for a few days.

Really nice location with a great owner. I’d definitely recommend that place for all the people that want to see the traditional side of Japan. Just awesome!

This is a wonderful place to stay! It may look far from Kyoto Station and places of interest but it’s really not. Easily accessible by bus or train plus the temples and gardens just blocks away have way fewer tourists. Highly recommend. The overall space is small, but the room wasn’t tiny (at least by Japanese standards!). And as everyone else has said, the owners are fantastically helpful.

Thanks Mr Bon for another great stay! On our second time here we were delighted to see that the charm, zen and eclectic vibe of the place was the same as last time. An easy walk from Kitaoji subway station, strolling distance to beautiful Zen temple Daitoku-ji and another easy walk to the Golden Temple, the location is stellar... and so quiet! Met some great like-minded travellers who enjoyed exploring the local restaurants and bakeries too. And Mr Bon! A genuine and lovely host very willing to explain the ins and outs of the area and let us know when special events were on. We'll be back for sure!

Love love love Guest House Bon!!! Gorgeous, rustic little place on the edge of Kyoto. Well worth the trip. It's a rustic, beautiful, romantic getaway spot. The owners are wonderful people. Highly recommend them.

Great place! I had an excellent stay there. The owner and his wife are friendly and know the area. The owner knows the bus and train routes and can tell you how to get to the tourist spots quickly and efficiently. The location is also good. The guesthouse is near a street with all kinds of restaurants and local bars. The owner knows the area and can recommend places that would otherwise be impossible to find. About a 5 minute walk from the guesthouse is Daitoku-ji temple complex. If you have some extra time between sightseeing, it's a great place to wander around. The guesthouse itself is fun. There's a communal room with a television downstairs. Other guests will tend to congregate there, so you can usually meet new people if you want. It's also comfortable. Each room has an internal heater. If you turn it on when you get back to the guesthouse, when you're ready for bed, you can return to a warm cozy room. All in all, I had a great stay. I met some new people at the guesthouse that I never would have met otherwise, ate at restaurants I never would have found, and was able to get to the touristy spots easily. One tip for future guests - there are local supermarkets near the guest house (there's also one at the subway station). If you're going to a touristy spot, buy lunch at one of the supermarkets (e.g., a bento box) instead of trying to buy food at the touristy spots. It's better and cheaper.

The guest house is very well taken care of and has the lovely feeling of a typical Japanese home. The host is friendly and helpful which made our stay even better. His helpful advice really made our trip special, especially because we had limited budget. We really enjoyed going to the nearby public bath, the Aburi Mochi Teahouse, and the peaceful Daitokuji Temple. I liked our stay at their guest house so much that I'm already thinking about coming back.
