2 Apr 2023: We came to walk along the street at night. However, I think the view wasn't as nice as we imagined. The streets were rather empty, and perhaps dull as well. You get a little of the old Kyoto vibe, which is nice, but if you're in a hurry, there's no need to purposely visit this area in my opinion. It's still nice to stroll along the streets here, but note that most shops are all closed past evening.

Really old school street that is well preserved. No photo or videos are allowed on the street so that the Geikos are not disturbed. Lots of restaurants options which are really not options at all… because most are by reservations only.

Walking around here feels like going back in time. Great souvenir shopping eating and coffee options. My friend told me you can see geisha here but I didn’t see any walking around :) recommend this place to all!

Hanamikoji-dori seems to be the go-to spot when tourist visits Gion. You'll find lots of foreigners here wearing traditional Japanese kimono. They all don't come here without a reason, as the street is pleasantly wonderful to stroll around, whether day/night. If you're lucky you'll spot a Maiko on her way. Authentic Japanese restaurants and cafes on your left and right will surely gives you a unique experience. Most of them comes with a high priced menu here.

Like transported back into time. Not sure whether some of the shops like people to walk around here. Seems rather private yet scenic. Different feels altogether in day or night. Unsure how to make reservations at the diners here. Ultimately, ok for a walk, nothing much to do otherwise.

Opposite of the Yasaka shrine, two walk path that is usually crowded by the locals and travellers. You will find a lot of food chains and plenty of outlets to spend your time. Street is busy and packed with crowd.

This place is overrated. Not much to walk about especially at night in winter. Go in the morning. It pales in comparison to even the main streets. Only the first house where the renown Geisha was supposedly borne was crowded and nicely lit. Maybe I visited it too late in the day at 6:30pm. Other tourists like me were also commenting it was such a tease…

If you see these girls walk on the street, please do not disturb them. Please do not stop them. They’re on the way to work. Respect them and restaurants follow the local rule are tourists responsibilities.

Awesome piece of Japanese architecture and history. Great location for some street photography too. It's such a short walk away from Kinkaku-ji as well. I'd recommend heading here after visiting the temple at sunset.

Quaint Street in Gion with traditional houses, some of them are converted into restaurants/ cafes. Lots of tourists wearing Kimono taking photos. Some streets are private roads and prohibits photo taking. Worth a visit as it's just off the main streets of Gion.

Visited Kyoto Japan from Dec 29, 2023, to Jan 2, 2024 – not an ideal time as many places were closing, and the street lights creating a unique atmosphere were mostly turned off. Christmas to New Year isn't celebrated prominently in Kyoto, lacking fireworks and with numerous closures, including museums, parks, restaurants, and establishments. However, notable temples remained open, attracting a mix of tourists and locals.

One of Kyoto City’s most famous streets, Hanamikoji is situated in the Gion district. This historic area hearkens back to the Japan of yesteryear, with its traditional wooden merchant houses and quaint ochaya, or teahouses. It’s also one of the Kyoto geisha districts, and you’re bound to spot one of these elegant figures on an evening stroll. The historic architecture of Hanamikoji Street is one of its highlights, particularly the prevalence of its machiya, or wooden merchant homes, which feature narrow facades. Many now house restaurants where you can sample delectable local cuisine prepared in the distinct Kyoto style. Tucked in between these machiya are also ochaya, or teahouses, where you can learn more about Japanese heritage during a tea ceremony with a geisha. The most famous teahouse is Ichiriki Chaya, instantly recognizable for its imposing red walls. Ichiriki has hosted samurai warriors and some of the world’s most powerful politicians over its 300-year-old history. The district comes alive during the Gion Matsuri festival each July. Processions of colorful floats and musical performances help draw over a million visitors to Hanamikoji every summer. In spring, stroll down this “blossom viewing lane” in the early evening and catch it at its absolute best during the Kyoto hanami season.

This is one of my favorite spots when visiting Kyoto. It’s a great place to spot geisha and maiko, but even if you don’t spot them, the overall atmosphere, architecture, and feel of the area is astonishing. Feels very traditional when walking through as well.

Just stroll around the area, and enjoy the atmosphere. but expect it to be very crowded. Go in early morning, or near sunset time, and the crowd is not as big. Count yourself lucky if you see geiko/maiko going to their next appointment. But please don't obstruct them, touch their clothes, or chase them for photos ... The photos were taken during multiple trips, before a law was rolled out forbidding photography on this street.

arrive at 6p when most of the crowd is gone. there was mostly tourist here looking for a meal or strolling to capture the beautiful architecture. I got lucky on my first day to spot a geisha walking.

The borders have opened but the usual Kyoto crowd is yet to return. There is no better time to enjoy the amazing sites in Kyoto than now. I visited Hanami-Koji Street yesterday and was not disappointed.

A lovely street with old-style buildings on both sides that will take you to Japan of another era. They say it’s a popular spot to see geisha but we weren’t lucky to spot any during our visit. However, we visited Gion Corner and were able to see a Kyo-Mai performance by maiko which was amazing as well. I would recommend going early as most shops were closed by the time we reached and we could only spot a couple of cafés that were open like Laduree.

A short street with old buildings. That's about it. Nothing much to do or see here. There are signs placed along the road that indicates photo taking is prohibited. A very unwelcoming gesture to any tourist. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of geishas but all I saw were tourists in kimonos. Perhaps a better time would be to come in the evening.

This place is usually so crowded that it is not a great use of your time. However, directly after Japan reopened it was remarkable pleasant to walk around. There are many similar streets around Japan which are not nearly as impacted by tourists and judging by all the signage, the locals struggle with the crowds on a daily basis.

Picturesque afternoon walk amongst local and foreigners up to major attractions Kodaji temple - Sanneizaka street - Kiyomizu dera. Almost all walking as subways and public transport difficult or crowded in these areas. Should plan sufficient time to navigate amongst myriad streets and sights. Locals dress-up in colorful kimonos always a lovely sight. The natural historic architecture of preserved wooden buildings another attraction unto itself.

We went Saturday. Not much people. A lot are closed at the time of visit. Not much to see or buy. No photography allowed without consent. There were some segments closed off due to construction. It's an ancient district with nice historical-modern houses, but that's it. Unless you have a tour guide explaining the significance or function of this street it really is boring to go to. It is the nighttime one should go and no other time periods (it was after all a red light district in ancient periods). Cars are also passing through the area. No Geishas spotted. A good place to walk but a park would be better.

Old Street for geisha sightings but it was a rainy day so there was none, probably better in the evening. This street is at the busiest shopping area with a lot of cafes, restaurants, many matcha soft ice cream shops (u must eat a few). There is a kanji museum that we went to see. There were plums blossoming in the parks as it is winter season.

Come during the day and night time have different vibe. Here to enjoy the heritage building. Don’t think you can get to fine at most restaurant long this street as they are very small and mostly based on recommendation for reservation. However during the day, they have some dessert places that worth a visit.

The street at the daylight is very usual and becomes very crowded with tourists. At night it is way better with lanterns. Don’t have high hopes to meet geishas there. Because of the tourists they take taxi and walk via side streets. However, we saw one :) so good luck

Really not worth the visit. Crowded and over managed by security guards. It all seems very artificial. There are many other tiny residential streets in Kyoto that give a far better experience of the old Kyoto. We walked down the street and quickly left again. Didn't bother with any photos.

I feel like this street might be more of a tourist catch than a fun and authentic experience - almost movie set-like. I arrived here around 6AM and didn’t find this worth the detour on my plans when you can head into the area more and see plenty of similarly-designed buildings with a more authentic and lived-in feeling.

We accidently got to this street looking for the first Starbucks in Kyoto. We went there around 4pm, so not many stores and restaurants were open. So we went to coffee shop on Gion street instead. But we enjoyed walking along the street where many people wear kimonos and yukata.

You won't see Geisha's scurrying around, but we did enjoy tea with one as part of our visit. You are not allowed to take photos on the street due to the private residences. Not much to see on the street though, but quaint storefronts and homes.

Beautiful area with a lot of traditional Japanese buildings, rich with history, restaurants and the occasional geisha walking between appointments. I really enjoyed the feel of this area, it almost gave me the feeling of taking a glimpse back in time. I went on a weekday evening when it was raining lightly, so the streets were fairly empty which was really nice.

A touristy place. I didn't really see many Japanese here except those who work here. Those people who wear traditional Japanese attire isn't Japanese. There's few high end Japanese restaurant here that look expensive.

At first glance, the shop looks like a normal private house, and it's fun to take a walk. Inuyarai etc. are also placed in each house, and you can enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere.
