Wonderful structure and you get lost on its size and calmness. The whole area is extremely beautiful and peaceful. In the uphill shrine stairs, we happened to confront a group of 200 local students visiting the place, and every single of them say hi to us one after the other- surprisingly lovely and memorable :)

Japan’s biggest Torii. Beautiful view. I would recommended to go on the hill to see the different view of Torii and walk along the river.

Huge Torri (biggest in Japan) marks the end of pilgrimage route. To get the best picture, go up on the jetty next to the rice field.

Possibly the tallest Torri ⛩ in Japan. Situated in the former location of many centuries of the Grand Shrine in Hongu. Due to a massive river flood over a century ago, the Grand Shrine ⛩ was moved nearby to higher ground. You can see old photis and drawings of tje former shrine at the nearby Kumano museum and tourist center. This place is also a park and you can walk up yo the kumano river. Some locals exercise or meditate in the mornings in tjis area.

We hiked to get here and you could see the edge of this torii all the way across town as soon as you step out from the trees because it is SO big. Its open 24 hours but during the night there was no lighting at all, and if you plan on seeing the shrine nearby it closes at 5. There is a stamp here and one at the shrine too. Busses get more rare in the evening and there are less places to eat at night.

Loved the area, also got to meet Mr. Nakagishi Akira, who works as an English guide around the area. Very beautiful, and I'd love to come back when the sakura are blooming.

An absolutely mind blowing experience. The feeling of calm in this area is incredible. Not only is the view stunning, but you’re walking on such an ancient piece of Japanese history! Be sure to check out the travel centre and learn all you can about the region of Wakayama. You won’t be disappointed!

Getting to see the largest Torii gate in Japan was a fantastic experience. We had stayed in Kawayu Onsen and a shuttle took us to Hosshinmon-Oji, a starting point for the 2.5 hour hike which finishes at Oyunohara. The cherry blossom was abundant under this gate and flew in the wind all around us. Unforgettable experience.

The largest Torii gate in Japan, the title itself is worth visiting. It has a large site, behind it is a cedar forest which nestles the old site of the Hongu Taisha before it was flooded and rebuilt at its current spot. Do not miss out visit the river site just beside the old site, it's a nice place to have a rest before returning on the route atop the flood barrier for a different angle of the Torii gate.

The original site of the shrine is behind the big gate. It's covered by green moss and surrounded by trees. I was impressed!

Largest ⛩ in Japan. It is very close to Hongu Taisha and the Kumano Heritage Center. You can enjoy the view of Kumano River and some balancing rocks by the riverside near the ⛩
