Reasonable quality place but nowhere near as good as many restaurants we’ve eaten in Japan, so we were disappointed, particularly in light of all the great reviews. Possibly all customers when we were there were tourists which we think may explain the strangely high rating (4.6 currently - there’s just no way this is a 4.6 resto) - we don’t think locals would score this anywhere near so highly. Food was fine but a bit bland in both taste and texture. The atmosphere was dull because almost totally full of tourists (noting we’re also tourists). The staff were very nice

I really recommend this place to fellow tourists! It is centrally located in Kyoto, and the staff is proficient in English! Great food, awesome service and fair prices. Be sure to book in advance though, their website is easy to use and is also in English!

This spot was suggested by the cool guys from Kapital. We got two different kinds of okinomiyaki and they were delicious. There were different set menus or else you could get a okinomiyaki with a drink.

This is a place where you can get competent Hiroshima-style (i.e. noodles instead of batter) okonomiyaki at a medium/high price in a so-so location. I came through here in a party of three, ordered primarily a la carte (instead of sets) and our bill ended up just under $100 US including drinks. In the pros column, the English menu is designed for the novice/tourist and clearly intended to steer potentially overwhelmed gaijin to successful results, which it does: a tourist could speak literally zero Japanese, order by pointing at the pictures on the menu and end up with a pretty well-rounded meal. And while the food is very solidly OK, the real joy of going here comes from the cheeky Dragon Ball Z theme and the energetic, charismatic chef who works the teppan: the guy clearly loves his work and watching him in action is a genuine treat. In terms of negatives, the place itself is sort of tricky to find, and isn't really accessible by car. In fact, we found it by accident while wandering the arcade and put a pin in Google maps: even with the pin, re-finding it had us zig-zagging through alleys, etc.

The food here is absolutely delicious! We don’t eat meat and some fish, and the chef was able to accommodate which was amazing. We sat at the counter which was a great experience, watching the chef cook and feeling like part of the action. You will need to reserve during the busy season but it’s worth it!

Best Food Experience (and food) of my Life! My husband and I stumbled on this place after wondering around shopping and I feel so lucky to have gotten to eat here. The chef was friendly and very skilled. I got the vegetarian set and it was beyond excellent. If you’re lucky enough to get a reservation you won’t regret it. I will be dreaming of the meal I had here for a long time.

Overall 5/5 ======== Food 4/5 (please read below to understand!) Service 5/5 Cleanliness 5/5 Price 5/5 Location 5/5 Also this place is a gem in Kyoto, and I was lucky to find a spot despite having an unconfirmed reservation. Right off the bat the staff was SUPER friendly and the hostess also spoke English well. This is the smallest restaurant I visited, hosts around 10 people max! Location is great: in the Center, easily reached by public transportation and not hard to find. I came here specifically for the show cooking, okonomiyaki and because of the vegan mentions in the reviews. The vegan menu has a lot to offer, but there is a nr of dishes on the menu that could be adjusted fairly easily (I believe) to also accommodate a vegan lifestyle, expanding the possible selection and increasing the value for plant-based eaters. i took the vegan menu: an appetiser, 3 sides and a main and had a repetition of the silk tofu, which was slightly unfortunate. The focused and smiling chef was very efficient and skilful and whenever there was a bit of downtime he was doing dishes or entertaining guests. Very pleasant overall! The food tasted great, the twist with garlic and chilli fried edamame was top and I’d like to see more of these little tweaks that enhance the variety and elevate the simple dishes. The salad was nice (always a pleasure when you find something fresh in Japan, but could use a little more dressing. The teppanyaki was fabulous and nicely presented. The main dish (okonomiyaki) was very enjoyable with exquisite and delicate mushrooms. Being vegan in a vegan friendly restaurant is always tricky, because the endless possibilities for omnivores are better explored and mainstream. Meaning that the little tweaks and additives elevate a dish more easily. To a small extent I felt that the vegan okonomiyaki was the regular one but without animal ingredients instead of standing in its own. It was absolutely enjoyable, but I feel that it has the potential of becoming much more if that layer of magic is found. The price is fair, especially in comparison to the general price point in Tokyo and Kyoto. I wish this restaurant all the best and will definitely be back! Thanks to the staff for making this such a pleasurable dinner/evening 🙏🏼

We found this little place by chance and were excited to try it. The place was busy but we were happy to wait the 1 hour for a seat. The food was delicious but the service and communication is severely lacking. We ordered 3 dishes, 1 soft drink and 1 water. Other customers got their drinks and we did not. When we went to pay, the bill was for 3360 Yen which the chef explained was for 3 dishes and 2 soft drinks. I tried to explain that we were not served any beverages but did not receive any response. I just paid and leave.

A diamond amongst a heavy touristy area. Definitely get the okomomiyaki with extra toppings! The oysters (winter only) with mushrooms cooked in miso and butter are ah-ma-zing

5+ stars. We were lucky enough to get two seats without any reservation! Make sure to do it, unlike us, because you really want to get the chance to eat there! The staff is super welcoming and friendly, and it's great to see the chef cook in front of you. Atmosphere is on point, service too, and of course the food is delicious. They can make the okonomiyaki vegetarian or vegan so that was a real treat for us. We got the Kamehameha special (with seafood) and the Vegetable one made veggie. The waitress was super careful to get the order right. We were very happy to get to experience this in Kyoto!

Lovely time - our vegan friends were very excited to go here. The okonomiyaki had depths of flavor and textures, we tried the seafood version and vegetarian style as well. Welks and mushroom small plate was extremely flavorful. Plum wine to round at the meal and a host with a great sense of humor.

Amazing Okonomiyaki, on par with the best ones in Hiroshima. Everything tasted great, and the owner and the staff were super friendly. You need to come here if you are in Kyoto. Prices are great, but be aware that you usually need to book far in advance to secure a slot.

Visited this location in October 2023. This place is a small establishment that is absolutely worth changing any of your dinner plans to go here instead. Would suggest making a reservation ahead of time. Walk-ins are accepted, but you may get turned away. The staff service was exceptional, and the food was amazing. We suggest ordering from set A or B and being adventurous with your choices. If you’re a Dragonball fan, you’ll be in good company.

We really enjoyed our meal here. The three people running the dinner for us worked like a well oiled machine, team work made the dream work. My gf is vegetarian and the staff really made sure to avoid contamination of her food and everything was well cleaned. Menu is available in English and the staff spoke English with us as well.

We were a group of 3 people, who chose 3 different sets of okonomiyaki dishes. The food was so delicious that we can say it was one of our best meals during multiple trips to Japan. Despite of small size of the restaurant, there is a huge variaty of dishes available (meat, seafood, vegan). Service was also superb. In case you don't want to wait in the queue, a reservation in advance is recommended.

I went here yesterday as I've always wanted to go to try okonomiyaki and this was the perfect first time experience where you sit in front of the chef while he cooks the dishes. The service was great the staff are very attentive and can speak English. This place is done by reservation only so I would reserve online or if you're like us who happen to be strolling around in the area ask if you can reserve for another day and the staff will be happy to assist ☺️ The food was delicious I loved the veggie dumplings and vegetarian okonomiyaki definitely recommend!

Stumbled upon this restaurant tucked in a side street. Entered when there was no one inside but the crowd filled up really fast! Okonomiyaki was made fresh on the grill and super delicious. Chef was also friendly and skilful. We tried both the seafood and stamina set meals. Prawns tasted fresh and the serving was generous. Will definitely visit again if I happen to be in Kyoto.

Food is cooked on a teppan right in front of you. You get food fresh and piping hot! Limited seating so always plan ahead and make a reservation. Great value on set meals!

  • 5/5 Udbhav D. 10 months ago on Google
A very memorable dining experience, indeed! I would recommend getting a reservation. We actually went without a reservation but we (party of 4) waited outside the restaurant for thirty minutes before the restaurant opened for dinner service. The chef came out to ask us if we had a reservation and we said no, but he said since we were first and the next group reservation was 1 hour after opening, he could serve us but we would need to eat quickly so that the group with a reservation could be seated when the time came. While we were seated and waiting for our food, we noticed a number of groups come by without a reservation and they were turned away. The restaurant has one table slightly away from the grill that can seat up to 4 guests, and then I think 6-8 guests can be seated directly in front of the grill. This is why I would definitely recommend getting a reservation ahead of time. My husband and I got the vegan okonomiyaki and our friends got an okonomiyaki set meal that had seafood and a side of veggie gyoza. Our food was served quickly, and it was a treat getting to watch the chef prepare the ingredients and grill our meal! The vegan okonomiyaki was so delicious, and I would recommend this place to any vegan traveler! Our friends were also really happy with their meals. You may also enjoy the fun atmosphere with the Dragon Ball-Z themed toys decorating the walls and restroom!

Not easy to find (our taxi driver was kind enough to call the restaurant and ask for directions) but once you found it (besides us, there only been other travelers) the restaurant offers great food. The size of dishes is amazing and non of us had been able to finish the dishes...what a petty. Cash only. English menu available.

The place has a great atmosphere and the food is authentic and delicious. Best place for traditional okonomiyaki in Kyoto.

  • 3/5 Heidi W. 2 years ago on Google
Vegetarians beware - the menu has what looks like a veggie option, but after ordering, I saw the chef put pork into the okonomiyaki. He later said this is standard for all his okonomiyaki. Just make sure to let him know that you want *only vegetables* when ordering, and he will accommodate the request. I also felt this place was more expensive than usual okonomiyaki, and you are required to buy a drink. This seems unnecessary. I am sure there are better options nearby; no real reason to chose this place.

  • 5/5 Mike C. 2 years ago on Google
Shenron would approve I booked a table here on my wife's birthday weekend via email which was easy to do in English from their website. Both the website and the English menu in the restaurant are well done and very well put together, much better than other japanese restaurants. You can tell alot of effort has gone into the place from the look of the venue and menu right though to the presentation of the food. I worked in an Okonomiyaki ya in Osaka and was surprised to see the difference between the Kansai and Hiroshima styles of cooking. We both chose set A. The appetisers were great a very tender stewed beef tendon great for the cold weather outside and a light tofu dish. The tonpei was hands down the best I have ever tasted and the mains looked both as good as they tasted. We left with full and happy bellies. The couple who run the place we're welcoming and happy to listen to me both destroy Japanese with my poor ..very poor Nihongo skills and speak in English. I think this is a real passion project and it shows in every aspect of the experience. Thank you for having us, we had a lovely time and will be back soon! Ka.....mmmmmeeee......haaaaaaameeeeee ....HAAAAAA! Show less

Okonomiyaki tasted ok. Price a bit high for the items we ate. Even though we were told we had to wait for a seat, we also had to wait a lot to have our meals made. I thought there was a lot of time spent talking. It’s a small restaurant and the seats are facing the grill. The chef and other guests were loud having a laugh and conversation we couldn’t understand in Japanese. We kinda felt left out. I think this seating format requires more inclusivity. The server was very nice and kind getting our order in.

One of my favourite meals I've had in Japan so far. Ordered the vegetable deluxe vegetarian okonomiyaki, which is made with noodles, egg, spring onion, beansprouts, three or four types of mushroom, a load of nice greens and spices and slathered in delicious sauce. The portion size was on the large side and I definitely left feeling full! As well as being delicious, it was a great experience to watch the chef make the whole thing in front of you. I was happy with the price at ¥1480, although you do also have to order a drink, with soft drinks at ¥350 and alcohol at ¥550. They also have set menus with a side and a drink for ¥3500. You have to order one main and drink per person - I don't think you're allowed to share. Staff were friendly and spoke some English, and the menu's in English too. Highly recommend for vegetarians and vegans, although there's plenty of meat on the menu too.
