One of the best hotels we have stayed in, worldwide. Gorgeous design with perfect location, easy access everywhere. The lobby is beautiful and you get a wonderful feeling just stepping in. Spacious, high ceilings and big windows offer views to the garden. The rooms are designed with attention to details, in very luxurious way. You will honestly never want to leave this place. The food is delicious as well, the Japanese breakfast especially. They have good restaurants on premises as well and then you can enjoy evening drinks in the garden. The highlight is definitely the Spa. The only downside is that the spa allows children only between 10 am and 4 pm, which is usually the time you are out and about, so you either have to cut your sightseeing time or you do not get to enjoy the spa. Other than that, the hotel is perfect, the staff is exceptionally nice and attentive. We will definitely be back

This hotel is beautifully designed by famous Hong Kong designer- Andre Fu. The room is similar to St Regis Hong Kong and the Upper House Japanese style. However, the service of this terrible, probably the worst Marriott luxury hotel in Asia. The assistant front desk manager Yuya Arakawa was rude and impolite, definitely not a professional hospitality. Be aware of this hotel if you expect good experience. Their staff are pretty irresponsive and often took them hours to reply enquiries and requests. This hotel also disregarded the membership status and fail to provide proper hotel information upon arrival and welcome email in advance as well. I will never visit this hotel again, as there are better Marriott or other luxury hotels with excellent service in Kyoto, such as the Ritz Carlton or the Suiran, Luxury Collection, Park Hyatt, etc. Once again please think carefully before staying in this hotel !

The place is beautiful and made of beautiful materials, the bed and bedding is super comfortable, the rooms are large, and the staff are very nice. The turndown service was amazing - they were thoughtful and detailed and remembered preferences (like I like iced coffee and made sure I had ice in the room). I was most impressed with the maid/turndown service crew! They made me feel catered too. However, it is lacking in common sense to cater to travelers. It is farther (35m bus to center) so it will be difficult without sacrificing a lot of time to go in and out throughout the day. Considering many travelers leave early to see sights without hordes of tourist you would expect them to open breakfast earlier than 7am (they do give you boxed breakfast upon request but most hotels open breakfast at least by 6 or 630a). They also only allow children in the springs from 10a-4p which means you have to give up part of your day of exploration to use it with a child (even though it is not busy at night). We booked this place because of the reviews but wished we booked closer to the main areas unless you plan to stay in Kyoto for more than a few days you won’t have time to use many of the amenities (there is only breakfast and the springs, no club floor).

A stunning example of the incredible dedication to excellence the talented people of this region dedicate their lives to. Not only was our stay here magnificent, the region and people of Kyoto made our stay one to remember. Every inch of this property, new and old, feels cohesive and very intricately chosen. Our room was beyond comfortable with a new treat placed bedside every evening (I am still obsessed with the Matcha Lip balm). Every thoughtful touch was very much appreciated including the books on the shelves, robes, slippers, full closet with hangers, toiletries and the incredible in room bar. We were lucky enough to be here for Sakura season and the grounds were stunning. I can not get over the incredible attention to detail, the friendly staff and accommodations. I will absolutely be returning as soon as I possibly can. Thank you.

Beautiful but not worth the price point of about 80,000 yen average and redemption value of about the same in points I think. But for a one time experience, I would say go for it. I requested an upgrade and they gave me a Junior suite which was very nice despite it being a busy day! The room was beautiful but there’s nothing around except Nijo castle. No lounge either.

One of the best hotels you can stay at. Atmosphere is excellent and compliments Kyoto very well. Reception, garden, restaurants, rooms, spa and onsen work and flow harmoniously together. Everything feels tailor made for this excellent experience. Feels like a little island inside Kyoto with out feeling detached from the city. The staff was excellent 👌 and very friendly. The central garden is breathtaking. Some rooms have a great view of the Nijō Castle. The restaurants on site are excellent as well. Onsen is also very nice. 👍 Definitely worth a visit.

Stayed last December and it was quite the treat. Everything is so clean and the ambiance is fit for the tranquil Kyoto feel. The room, bath, service was great but the things I found most mention-worthy are the spa and the French Toast breakfast. Apologies for the wall of text beforehand; The Spa: The staff keep their mask on at all times and the reservations are spaced out due to the Covid situation. The therapist was quite good and it honestly wasn't that pricey for the relaxation value. I always felt a strain in my neck, but during the treatment, that was all gone. Slept like a baby afterwards. Would definitely go again if I were to stay here in the future. The breakfast: You get to choose between Japanese or western style breakfast. I chose western and from there, I got to choose among like 6 different main dishes. I chose the French Toast and boy it was not the French Toast that I'd imagined, in a good way. It's the right amount of sweet along with a brulee encrusted layer along with some raspberry jam and it all dots so well. I really recommend it if you're into having a dessert like breakfast.

Absolutely incredible hotel!!! The whole place is stunning. Garden views, delicious breakfast and cute treats left at turn down. The staff are amazing and the atmosphere is insanely peaceful. My favourite hotel in Japan!

One of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. Impeccable service and furnishing. The front of the house staff are exceptionally helpful, and will go out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful experience. Differing amenity each night for turn down service. Rooms are modern, with strong Japanese influence. The spa and soaking pools are superb, and I would return just for those. 10/10

My wife and I spent two weeks in Japan and enjoyed our time in Kyoto with a stay at Hotel The Mitsui. The hotel was absolutely beautiful, especially the large garden courtyard. The restaurants were both wonderful with one hosting a chefs tasting menu and the other offering an Italian style menu. The tasting menu was delicious, and although we did not have the Italian restaurant for any meals, the breakfast was great and offered both a Japanese and western style buffet. The staff were all fantastic, and the majority even spoke English well which was very helpful. They were very helpful with recommendations as well as calling taxi for us, as the hotel is a short taxi ride from many destinations. We rented the private onsen for 1 hour and thoroughly enjoyed the space, which included some lovely snacks and drinks as well. Overall, highly recommend this hotel for a luxury stay in Kyoto, Japan!

Wow, this hotel is a gem. It’s one of the finest hotels we have stayed in. The staff is attentive, the interior design is elegant and creates a relaxing setting. The highlight of the hotel is the central garden which can be viewed from anywhere on the property. We also spent time in the Spa and private Onsen, a super relaxing and elegant space below the hotel.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, and I must say, it was an absolute delight. The hotel's decor was exactly the style of design I personally love - a perfect blend of modern Japanese aesthetics and elegance. Every corner of the hotel was thoughtfully decorated, creating a visually stunning and immersive experience. The staff at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto were truly professional and well-mannered. From the moment I arrived, they made me feel welcome and attended to my every need. Their attention to detail and commitment to providing exceptional service was evident throughout my stay. I would rate my experience with them a perfect 10/10. One aspect that impressed me was the cleanliness of the hotel. The rooms were immaculate and maintained to the highest standards, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic stay. The hotel's dedication to cleanliness was evident in every aspect, which further enhanced my overall experience. During my stay, I had to step out of my room for a while. When I returned, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the staff had added an ice cube to the ice bucket, ensuring that my drinks remained refreshingly cool. This small gesture showcased their attention to detail and their commitment to going above and beyond to make my stay enjoyable. I stayed at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto for two days, and while it was on the expensive side, I believe the price was to be expected for a hotel of this caliber. The level of service, the luxurious experience, and the reputation of the Marriott brand all contributed to the higher cost. If you are looking for a truly exceptional hotel experience, this is the place to be. In conclusion, my stay at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto was nothing short of outstanding. The well-decorated modern Japanese style, the professional and well-mannered staff, the attention to detail, and the cleanliness of the hotel all contributed to making it the best Marriott hotel I have ever stayed in. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Kyoto, even though it may come with a higher price tag.

Staying here was an absolute joy! It felt like living in a sanctuary. The staff paid close attention to detail from our arrival to our departure. Mariya-Sama had great recommendations for Japanese whiskey and gin at the Garden Bar. My mom and I were lucky enough to correspond with head concierge Kumiko-Sama, who took such fantastic care of us and our requests for specific outings and dinner reservations.

The service here is excellent. Honestly a 6/5 star staff. I was very welcomed by them and they tried really hard to speak English. The food is a good amount, but it wasn’t so special for the price. I think there are better afternoon teas in Kyoto, but the staff here really made the day special for me.

Overall, a wonderful hotel. Beautiful lobby and nicely designed rooms. The rooms look new, have a modern Japanese design and are very comfortable. The beds are amazing and the linens are butter-soft. Great amenities in the rooms. The thermal spa is gorgeous and very nice to spend some time in. The service is also great (other than at breakfast, but more on that below) and all the staff speak excellent English. There were also many more TV stations in English than any other Japanese hotel in which we stayed. However, my biggest gripe was with breakfast, for which I took off one star (and probably should have taken two off). The food options are very limited and do not change at all day by day. By far the worst breakfast of any hotel in which we stayed in Japan - both in terms of food and service. The service at breakfast is also terrible. You ask for two coffees and you get one, if any at all. You ask for milk for coffee and then ask two more times before actually getting it. There was not a single thing we asked for that we got without multiple reminders (and it was not language issues that caused this nor were we asking for something unique). Lots of staff just seem to aimlessly wonder around without being helpful. Very limited food options at the buffet and ordering off the menu takes forever.

We visited just for the spa whilst staying in kyoto, which was an incredible experience. All treatments give access to the Onsen beforehand - a beautiful place to relax in, before the treatments. Certainly not cheap, but you get what you pay for here.

Spent one night at the Mitsui Kyoto. Magnificent hotel with traditional Japanese features but also gaijin friendly (very comfortable beds, choice of American / Continental breakfast on top of the Japanese options). Had dinner at restaurant Forni which is worth to be Michelin-starred. Extremely attentive staff (spontaneously offering cold water when leaving in the morning for the daily excursions in the city). We were in a suite overlooking the Nijo Castle with TV in the bathroom and the best shower I have EVER experienced. Next time in Kyoto, we will stay here again for sure.

Fantastic property with a fabulous garden, water features and a weeping cherry tree. It was tranquil to sit in the lounge with a welcome tea and sweet while awaiting to be checked in. Service team was friendly and enthusiastic. Room was nice and quite well-designed with sliding-doors sectioned off the bedroom from the bathroom. They close snugly by themselves with just a thug, blocking ambient noise from bathroom and outside aisle thus improving sleep quality. Housekeeping was efficient and thorough too. Only quibble was after trying two restaurants, only Toki made the cut. The special Nijo Castle tour was definitely well-worth a visit.

Beautiful and serene hotel. A breath of fresh air and a refuge away from all the tourists! The service at the hotel was outstanding and always with a smile. We really enjoyed our stay and would have stayed longer if we had the time! I agree with an earlier poster that you may need to reserve the spa services prior to your trip, as they were booked up for us as well when we were there. Also, a good idea to book any hotel activities such as the tea ceremony session, hotel art work tour, and private onsen, etc. prior to your visit. Another tip is, if you are awake before breakfast time, go enjoy the peaceful garden. There are tables and chairs outside of the Forni restaurant facing the garden. We sat there on the mornings and relaxed.

We had a fantastic stay during the 2021 Sakura season. We stayed in a Nijo Castle view King room. You could hear quite a bit of road noise and the view is mostly of a busy road and the wall of the castle. If I went back, I’d opt for the garden view rooms that overlook the internal courtyard of the hotel. The hotel bar served some fantastic cocktails. The hotel spa was also fantastic and highly recommended at the end of a trip with a lot of walking Kyoto. The service at the hotel was impeccable.

Incredibly special experience the moment you pull into the hotel. Modern, clean vibes with graceful traditional touches and unmistakable Japanese elegance - the atmosphere and design choices throughout the hotel seemed very thoughtful and made my time there feel unique and actually luxurious. Comfortable beds, beautiful views, and luxuriously appointed bathrooms. A true 5-star experience! Service was excellent and respectful, with a comfortable check-in process (during which they provided a much appreciated welcome tea and sweets). The breakfast was quite nice, and we enjoyed a delightful afternoon tea service as well. The public bath in the basement was interesting - the atmosphere was a little dark, and I feel like the modern vibe they were going for went a little too far towards cold/sterile/mechanical rather than being warm/relaxing/inviting, as typically expected in a spa. They provide lockers and a bathing suit if needed, with plenty of towels and water bottles in the locker room and the actual co-ed bath area. The bath area itself was fine, being basically just one large pool, though it would’ve been nice to have a section with hotter and/or cooler water, since the whole bath/pool was all just moderately warm. Still, the entire experience here was truly special and memorable, and I would absolutely not hesitate to return or recommend this to anyone looking for a luxurious, boutique-y feeling hotel that you likely can’t find anywhere else! This set a new bar for a 5-star hotel experience.

This hotel is one of the highlights of Kyoto. I adore the serene and peaceful atmosphere, with its beautiful garden adding to the charm. The cocktails at the bar are truly delightful. The gym may be small but they have some techno gym machines.

This hotel is absolutely stunning and the service is impeccable. The rooms are very comfortable and large, we stayed in a Garden View room which had a beautiful view of the courtyard. My girlfriend and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary here, and Patricia at the concierge desk did an absolutely incredible job making our stay special. She helped me organize flowers and a special setup to the room to surprise my girlfriend. Additionally, she helped us set up multiple meal reservations at restaurants for our weekend in Kyoto! Even the smallest restaurants require reservations, so we really leaned on her to help us. I keep Kosher so communicating dietary restrictions is very difficult since I don’t know the language. Our sushi Omakase lunch didn’t fully understand and made a couple mistakes, but when we revisited with Patricia she called our dinner reservation to ensure they understood and we proceeded to have our absolute favorite meal of our Japan trip. She is one of the reasons we would stay at this hotel again! The one downside of this hotel is the location. It is not the most conveniently located to bus and train stations, so commutes to the different tourist spots took a lot of time. There are some really good restaurants in the area, however if you are trying to explore the expanse of the city, it can be difficult from this location.

Wow just wow! If you love modern design with Kyoto charm I would highly recommend Mitsui Luxury. Eveything about this place quietly whispered luxury and design. This is my favorite hotel by far in Kyoto. Rooms were beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. There were two restaurants one was French and another Italian. I only ate at the Italian restaurant and it was delicious. The bar was breathtaking with the views of the garden. How could you not feel at peace here. The location was great as well just across the street from the Nijo Castle. Service impeccable I can’t rave enough about this place. Would come back for sure

Excellent hotel. 5 star service and amenities. Stayed in the Nijo suite. Premium (new) wood furniture throughout the rooms and premium marble for the bathrooms and shower.

  • 5/5 Jimmy H. 1 year ago on Google
This hotel was historically the Mitsui family's residence located across from Nijo castle. I was fortunate enough to stay in the 1 King Bed Nijo suite with my partner, and W.O.W. Everything about the hotel was fantastic! From the location, every inch of decor, service. I have a hard time finding words to describe how every single detail was carefully planned out during the design. The room overlooked Nijo castle and I appreciated the view alongside a semi busy road and a creek, as that gave that sense of "history meets the present". The suite was probably the same size as many 2 bedroom apartments, with a mini bar, large living room and large bedroom. The furniture had a contemporary feel and made with wood. The bathroom was incredible with a shower and tub with a tv inside! The basement held the onsen that you needed to call ahead to reserve. The pools themselves were luxuriously bathed in soft light while the room was a black and stone theme. The staff all over the hotel were always so friendly and helpful to one's every need. We tried the Japanese breakfast set, the Wagyu burger and Margherita pizza at FORNI, and those were their own experiences. There's so much more that I could say, but you really have to stay to find out.

Wow! What a nice hotel in a great location with view to the Castle. Service is the best you could ask for. Customer service is pleasant and elegant. I would definitely stay here again if coming back to Kyoto.

Amazing hospitality from the staff! Staff from every level, e.g. room service, front desk, restaurant and spa, everyone was detail-oriented and went above and beyond!

Luxurious staying no doubt. Gorgeous experience from every aspect. But still a bit high pricey.

  • 5/5 Dave H. 7 months ago on Google
This hotel is exquisite. From the stunning Japanese garden that the hotel is built around, to the beautiful rooms, we were blown away with how wonderful this hotel is. We found it via Marriott Bonvoy’s luxury collection, and it definitely earned that label. It feels more like a bespoke, luxurious accommodation than a cookie cutter, corporate Marriott property. We also found the food at the hotel to be excellent. Kyoto has a lot of matcha treats, and at the hotel the two we tried and liked a lot were the matcha espresso martini and the warm matcha breakfast cheesecake. We’ll definitely stay here again if we make our way back through Kyoto.

Very smooth check-in process, was seated and served a welcome drink. The ambassador showed us our way to the room and did a room tour for us. The hotel knows that I’m celebrating anniversary with my partner and they pre-arranged a nice welcome amenities and a hand-written card. Turndown service was very thoughtful as well, room slippers are placed in a position that we could slip on easily. Pajamas are prepared and there’s a lip balm place on the bedside table. The best hotel I’ve stayed in Kyoto. Amazing service and picturesque landscape garden with tastefully done room designs. 5⭐️Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto. Favourite hotel in Kyoto that’s for sure!

All the positive reviews are correct, this is the best hotel I have ever been to in Japan and probably in the world. The staffs are so friendly and helpful, the room is excellent, newly built, the facilities are the same, newly built. I won’t hesitate to stay here again if I visit Osaka or Kyoto.

An incredible experience, best hotel in Kyoto. Delivers on everything you would expect from a 5-star hotel. Highly recommend.

  • 5/5 Anna L. 11 months ago on Google
We had a wonderful 5 night stay here during Sakura season. It's one of the top hotels we've stayed in Kyoto. The concierge team went above and beyond to help us make restaurant reservations before our arrival. The rooms are impeccably clean and spacious. The spa facilities are the best of the best. We still dream about the daily Japanese breakfast. My only recommendation is to have more flexibility on the art tours. I was really interested in the ceramics and art in the hotel, but it was fully booked for all 5 nights I was there. There were only 1 or 2 people on some of the tours, but they were not taking more. It was a great experience nonetheless.
