I stopped playing basketball and was looking for another cardio-intense sport. I've always had the curiosity to start BJJ but never took that step to join an academy. Fortunately I moved to Jersey City and googled a near by BJJ academy. From the moment I walked into the building my fears were put to rest. I am amazed on just how far I have progressed but yet I remain humbled at how far I still have to go. I am grateful for this academy and professor Gabriel. My teammates are awesome and super supportive. It has been 2 years and I am still here training. OSS

I’ve never studied BJJ . I was invited by a family member to take a class . It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in a martial art school . The professor is one of a kind ! Also the group that was there at the time made it comfortable for a first timer to roll on the mat with them . They lent a helping through out the class ! Much respect ! Till next time !

It's difficult to review what it feels like to become a member of a community. But that is exactly what it means to be a student at a Jiu Jitsu school. You'll find a group of like minded people who will support you, challenge you and teach you how be become better. This is just as true for children as it is for adults. Renzo Gracie Jersey City AKA "RGJC" AKA "Chill Town Jiu Jitsu" AKA "House of Champions" is a powerful community. As one of the lucky members I've learned new self defense and combat skills, found fitness and friends. Update: 5.5 years later. Still here and loving it!

At first I didn't know what to expect from RGJC and was intimidated to join. Once I entered the location, the staff and members immediately greeted me with a warm welcoming atmosphere. I was impressed by the high level of quality instruction by the in house and guest professors and immediately felt at home with the friendly members. Needless to say I signed up the same day, attend regularly, and have found a new found love for Jiu Jitsu! Oss!

I only trained there for a few weeks when the school had just newly open. From my experience, Gabriel, the owner, was very welcoming and a very humble guy. He was very knowledgeable in his craft and he was tough as nails when I had the honor to roll with him. The prices he charges to train at his academy is very fair compared to other schools I have trained in the past. I have a few friends that still train at this academy and they have nothing but good things to say about this school and the owner.

I started training at this gym in late November after training at a Hoboken gym for a couple weeks. I took some time to research different gyms between Bayonne, Jerssey City, and Hoboken and ultimately picked this one after a trial class that Gabe(the owner and a black belt) taught. About 4 months in, a few things stick out to me. 1) the amount of classes offered makes it very easy to find a time that works for you. 2) the instruction is very clear, thorough, and does not skip the basics to do more flashy, fashionable stuff. This is important because at my last gym I was learning x guard sweeps on day one and had no clue why or when id even used it. I've learned a few advanced things so far, but I always learn when and why I might use such a technique. 3) I regularly get to roll with Gabe and other black belts as well. This may not be a big deal to you, but I have a friend who has been training for over 2 years and has still never rolled with anyone above a purple belt. Rolling with Gabe is always a motivating and educational experience. 4) I've met a bunch of great people. Everyone is supportive, patient, and inviting. 5) If you are into bjj for competition there are a good number of competitors, but there are also plenty of casual goers. The curriculum also mixes in self-defense techniques regularly, which is unfortunately not always common in competition-based school. 6) There is a ton of mat space. Three floors and we rarely even need two to fit everyone at one given time. 7) the morning and midday classes are particularly small 6-12 people usually. This is great because you can get lots of individual attention. 8) Gabe is a very generous for my time. One day I came to class and to start the lesson Gabe asked what I was working on and how it was going. He then tailored the entire class lesson to fixing my particular mistake with a certain technique. This has happened multiple times with different students and it's an amazing experience. Everyone learns from this of course, but for the particular student its almost like a mini private lesson. This is all I can honestly say thus far after 4 months. Again, I'm a white belt that trains about 4-6x a week and really loving it.

Excellent place to train Jiu Jitsu. Professor Gabe and his team are a great group of people to learn from. I mostly attend the 7.15am classes on the weekdays which are typically more intimate than some of the evening / weekend classes, so you'll inevitably get a lot more personal attention. I also attend a handful of the evening / weekend classes which is a great opportunity to meet more people and add variety to your training. Through RGJC I've learned a lot more about myself and have benefitted tremendously in other facets of my life. I would most certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun physical activity, a way to meet more people in the community and one of the best ways to learn self defense (it's one of the most critical, yet underappreciated skills you'll ever need)

Been training there a little over a year, learned a lot (I had trained for several years prior) RGJC is exactly what you would expect out of a gym owned by a Renzo Gracie Black Belt. I have enjoyed every class, AND they have opened several more locations in the area, which makes it an incredible value because you have multiple gyms in the area to choose from, I personally go to The Heights location mostly now and the mat space there is the best I’ve seen anywhere, plenty of room. The instructors always go above & beyond teaching, they make themselves available to answer questions and help you progress. I highly recommend RGJC.

Most of the foundation of my Brazilian jiu-jitsu comes as a result of training at Renzo Gracie Jersey City from very near its opening to a handful of months ago when I moved away from JC. And while I currently train at a different academy, I use techniques I learned here multiple times in a single round of grappling. My experiences in class and competing in tournaments (something I wouldn't have done without the encouragement and support I received) define my jiu-jitsu. Training there has been one of the most important experiences I've had in martial arts.

This place is like another home for me. The community is so friendly and encouraging, the teachers are fantastic and the students respectful. I was hesitant to get back into martial arts but this place has supported and guided me every step of the way. On a deeper level, BJJ and Kickboxing has taught me so much about myself, been an incredible stress buster as well as helping me start believing in myself again. Can’t recommend this place enough. Come roll with us and never give up.

Amazing community- Good vibe, friendly instructors and training partners, great location and many class offered for flexible training schedule (morning noon evening). Most importantly, they teach practical jiu jitsu techniques that work in competitions and in self defense.

This place is my second home! Always a joy to walk into the doors and train here! I’ve learnt so much in my time here and I can’t wait to learn more! Definitely one of the best Jiu Jitsu schools in New Jersey.
