My family was visiting from Singapore and loved the place and food so much they made me take them back 3 times. So we went four times for dinner in just ten days. If that doesn't tell you how good some of the dishes were, then maybe these pics will. The 手撕包菜 (shredded cabbage) and 辣子鸡 (spicy fried chicken) in particular were big hits and we ordered them 3x. The spicy beef with celery and shrimp fried rice were well received too. Some other dishes, like the scallion pancakes, felt a little oily. But overall we had a great time.

I married a Chinese girl who loves Chef Tan for like crazy. We live close by and She never goes to other Chinese restaurant. Only Chef Tan is our choice. It’s like on a daily basis! I am Not exaggerating at all! This is our Beijing Duck for Chinese New Year’s Eve. Just amazing! This restaurant definitely improves our life quality. It’s such a blessing to live close to the restaurant.

Here we had one of the best meals we had in our trip in New Jersey. The nailed Chinese bold flavors are incredible warming. The service was great and the prices are higher than normal por Chinese food but definitely worth it. More for a “fancier” Chinese meal but still very affordable. We had 6 dishes and the bill was $81 before tip. 100% recommended

I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant today on 9th April 2023. The food was not up to par and definitely not worth the high price. I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the dishes, which lacked flavour and taste. Specially the Chicken and Vegetable Noodles and Spring roll. To make matters worse, the manager seemed more concerned with fighting for a larger tip than addressing our concerns about the food. It was clear that the restaurant cared more about money than providing a positive dining experience for their customers. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a quality meal and good service. Save your money and look elsewhere.

A nice place to have authentic Chinese food in Jersey City. This place is on the Washington Blvd next to the Newport Path Station. We tried the pan fried chicken dumplings and the Mapo Tofu which was spicy and tasty but the fried chicken was extremely dry. Overall a good place to have some authentic Chinese food.

Ordered eggplant with garlic sauce, chicken with garlic sauce, fried chicken, chicken lo mein. I am not a fan of eggplant but the eggplant dish is really good. The fried chicken is very different and nice, it has a hint of lemon grass on it, feels like chicken popcorn. Rest everything tasted nice, just that it is a bit oily. Overall, good taste, nice vibes.

Average! In all senses: food quantity, quality, taste. This was one of the few food joints that had table available on an extremely crowded Friday evening at East Village, so decided to try it out. Ordered pan fried chicken dumplings (thick outer cover with less chicken filling, lack of adequate flavor), and Chongqing style chicken (too deep fried - chicken harder than usual, again lack of flavor).

This is a great Chinese restaurant in Newport. They have a good ambiance, quick service and good food. I have ordered and dined in here for a couple of times and it has never disappointed. I love their special fried rice. Would definitely recommend this place.

A wonderful little gem we picked out for our evening. We tried a variety of dishes and enjoyed ALL of them except for the pork belly dish (not much flavor except for spice and cucumber). Their noodles, wontons in chili oil, and mongolian beef were super delicious! Very interesting menu as well with dishes of all sorts I hadn't heard of. Beautiful beautiful beautiful atmosphere!

The interior of the restaurant was so welcoming along with the live music! We were seated right away and I was so overwhelmed with the huge selection of items. My favorite part about the menu was even though it was so overwhelming, there were pictures included to help narrow down what catches your eye. We started off with the pork belly with garlic sauce and it was so tasty. I am still craving it right now! The freshness of the cucumber just pairs so well with the pork belly. We also ordered mapo tofu and scallion dish with chicken because they’re my top go-to comfort foods. It was delicious with the chef tan styled fried rice we ordered. The dish came in style. It didn’t just look good, it also tasted good. Lastly, we got the monoglian beef and it was so delicious. I prefer sweet meat over savory and this hit the spot. It wasn’t overly sweet, but just the right amount. I’d definitely recommend trying Chef Tan! It’s a 2-3 minute walk from Newport PATH station and Newport centre is a short walk as well.

I came for dinner. I was seated as soon as I walked and being my first time there took me a bit longer to go through the menu. The waiter was nice and respectful of that. Once I ordered the food came in a promptly manner. The food was very good and I would come back again to try some other dishes.

Yummy place with spicy Chinese food. Great tea. We came with a large party of 9 which we prereserved beforehand. We tried a variety of dishes. The menu has a lot of pages, all of which I've taken photos of below except for wine list. The atmosphere was good and music wasn't overly loud. Servers can also speak chinese which is a plus.

I am really disappointed with the portion sizes at this restaurant. They are extremely tiny! It’s almost like they are trying to be sneaky with their takeout food, using a round lunch box that is even smaller than the usual rectangle one, and only filling it halfway! Please keep the portion size for takeout is the same as for dining in!

We ordered chicken dumplings and vegetarian spring rolls for appetizers! Unfortunately the bar was closed so we couldn’t try any cocktails. For main course we tried garlic chicken and Sichuan chicken with jasmine rice. The food was very delicious but I think the service could have been better.

I recently dined at this restaurant, and while I found the food to be oily, the steamed dumplings were decent. I decided to try Bamboo shoots for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by their taste. The shrimp fried rice was definitely a standout and highly recommended. The scallion pan cake was also enjoyable. For starters, the pepper crispy chicken was a tasty choice. Overall, the restaurant offered a satisfying dining experience.

Overall, the food was very good. I was delighted with the portion sizes and the flavors! I went around lunch time, and it was only me and one other person dining in, but the service was lackluster. After my server took my initial order, I did not interact with her for the remainder of my dining experience. A food runner brought out my food and the host brought me my check when I was ready. She never came back over to ask if I was enjoying the food, or if I needed anything. Another thing that bothered me was being charged something different than what was reflected on the menu. I bought a beer, which was priced at $5 but was $8 when I got my bill. When I asked about the discrepancy, I was told that the menu hadn’t been updated and that’s the new price. Granted, it’s only a $3 difference, but I don’t like surprises when I get the bill and if the menu is not going to reflect your new price for something, then at the very least the server should inform patrons. I did not think the response I got was sufficient because I take menu pricing transparency seriously and I don’t think it’s fair to essentially trick people into paying more than what they agreed to. All in all, the food was delicious with sizable portions but poor service and surprises on the bill can affect the dining experience enough to not have people return. (Scallion beef with veggie spring rolls)

This place has a fair amount of seating, so many large tables. We tried some vegetables dumplings, steamed chicken dumplings, and scallion pancakes. The Scallion pancakes were great. I personally preferred Scallion pancakes over the Dumplings. We also got Lamb & Beef Cumin Dish. My friend has lower spice tolerance so didn't enjoy that much. I'm not sensitive to spice, and mostly I love spicy food. I loved the Lamb Cumin Dish.

great food & great service 👍🏻 a bit worried at first due to negative comments about the foor & service. but I think they deserve the 5 stars. we ordered braised pork belly, sauteed lotus root & fried rice and decided to have more for take away 😊

Came across Chef Tan on a Saturday night whilst walking in Lower East Village, the restaurant was very busy but we were seated straight away. The restaurant itself is very sleek and the staff are very professional. We ordered & shared a few dishes: fried pork dumplings as a starter, the Chongqing fried chicken (the batter was amazingly crispy and super spicy!) but, the highlight of the meal was the braised pork belly in Mao's style...it was so so good, the pork was so tender and juicy! I definitely recommend this dish!

This is authentic Hunan and Szechuan chinese, and it is addicting. We got the Spicy Crispy Short Rib and the Pork with Dried Lettuce. Nice spice to the dishes, but not overwhelming. Large portions. First time here based on a recommendation from an Eater.com article. We'll definitely be back.

A nice place with friendly staff. Long menu with free vegetarian options. Our fried rice and string beans are very good. They are tasty and well made. Can't complain about them. The floor was slippery, could be due to rain outside.

Probably the most authentic chinese restaurant in town! I would recommend this place to anyone.

Never dined in but every time I’ve ordered take out it takes forever, and they pay you no mind while you wait. Meanwhile I watch as patrons have to flag down waitresses and grab their own menus. Food’s not bad, but not worth the wait.
