ShopRite of Metro Plaza is downtown Jersey City’s only major supermarket and meets that responsibility handily. This grocer’s strong suit is it’s excellent value and great selection. It’s shortcomings are long cashier and deli lines during peak hours. Located only minutes from the Grove St PATH station and downtown area, and with plenty of (free) parking, you won’t have a hard time getting to or from this spot. The store can get quite busy but if you can avoid Sunday afternoons, or the few days leading up to a holiday weekend, then you‘ll meet little resistance. They’ve recently added self-checkout lanes to address cashier congestion, and it’s done a good job. Expect to occasionally encounter above average waits at the deli or seafood counter. The store offers a wide selection of pretty much everything, as you’d expect from a major supermarket. They also have a generously sized liquor store, as well as a whole food/healthy food aisle. Overall I highly recommend this grocery store as it’s the only truly affordable option in downtown Jersey City. While boutique spots like Sprove (a few blocks down the street) routinely mark up items as much as 100%, ShopRite is almost always fairly priced. Just be prepared to wait a bit longer in return.

ShopRite Of Metro Plaza is probably the only supermarket in or near downtown Jersey City. This is a 7-10 mins walk from the Grove Street path station and about 12-15 mins walk from the Newport path station. You get everything from biscuits to meat to fruits to Vegetables here. They have a wide variety of spread and the vegetables and fruits are always fresh. It has a bakery where they bake fresh muffins and different breads. It also have a section for fresh meat and this sometimes had a pretty long waiting especially on Sundays. The liquor store is the life saves and the prices here are comparable to Super Buy Rite and had a lot of spot offers which is great. Overall we can get everything here for our day to day needs.

It has all the groceries you need but the place is very run down.. there’s minimum securities around and many times crazy and aggressive people run around inside. I was almost attacked by a man here. The area is scratchy if you are not driving here. But this is the only major supermarket in the area so there’s no better alternative. Just need to be in HIGH alert in this supermarket.. I am a six feet tall man and I do not feel safe here. I think many people go here are also in high alert too, can making any small incidents into a big conflict. One time, a normal looking man with two kids grabbed me from behind and threatened to kill me because I walked passed him.. and this is the crowds here.. just be high alert. Anyone can strike at any time

The management in charge has got to be some of the dumbest baboons to run a store. You people would really rather have extremely long lines instead of simply spending the extra money to hire more cashiers. Absolute garbage and the management should be ashamed of themselves.

This is the grossest ShopRite I have ever visited. Narrow aisles and always crammed with patrons. This store needs a remodel so bad. Its dingy af. Bad lighting. An unpleasant shopping experience guaranteed.

Place is always a disaster, haven’t been going for awhile and was shopping at ACME instead. Decided try ShopRite again since as I’ve said it’s been awhile and thought maybe things have improved…. apparently this location no longer provides baskets for shopping… ok fine, but then I pointed out there are no push carts around either, was told “ohh well you just just use your personal bags”. Not exactly ideal for carrying around groceries throughout the store. ACME and other local grocery stores always have plenty of CLEAN carts available. Done with ShopRite and their poor availability of everything including carts to shop with.

Understaffing at checkout makes for frustrating experience. Relying on self-checkout for a cart full of items is a nightmare. Unfortunate that SR charges higher prices in this area whereas rural NJ everything is marked down (and more cashiers on staff).

What a shock to see construction goin on..,haven’t shopped here in a year. Always to much traffic. Not good prices etc. well this visit was just as disappointing as before. Store is not organized well, it’s kinda small compared to other ShopRite’s and they don’t have a good selection of items. The setup is just to messy. I highly recommend other locations. This is good for just a few items if they have it.

Don't be tricked by the online promotions. Online orders are terrible at this store, and the customer service is worse. They argue and yell at you. I'm on my 6th phone call today with no refund. I had to sum up every item on my receipt in Excel, but they still refuse to believe a promotion is missing. Now they are sending a truck with receipts I already have. Half the time they charge you for items they do not deliver. They never give all the qualified discounts. And the produce is always rotten.

This ShopRite serves the Downtown Jersey City/Waterfront neighborhoods. It is a typical large supermarket though it can be crowded at times. The biggest problems with this particular store are sometimes they don't restock items quickly enough and they no longer provide hand baskets using the excuse of the plastic ban. Not providing hand baskets is extremely annoying. If you're only picking up a few items you really don't need a cart and it's a pain to put stuff in your own bag only to have to unload them at checkout and reload them into your bag again. The plastic ban is about plastic bags NOT plastic hand baskets. Either bring back plastic hand baskets or provide metal ones.

I bought from them online however they didn't deliver some of the items, charging everything on my credit card and want neither to refund nor to deliver!!!!! I called them several times, and they only made fun of me! Please can someone advise what I should do in this case? The amount is low, but it is not right!

ShopRite in New York and pretty much anywhere in the United States has always been some of the places I stop at it's not really my go-to place but it's one of the supermarkets that I go to please pay attention to the digital coupons please pay attention when you give them your phone number always use your loyalty cards and pay attention to the sales into your receipt other than that it's a wonderful clean place the bathrooms are always clean a bunch of nice and pretty and there's always plenty of handicap parking have a great day thanks for looking at my reviews

Updated- July, 2023. I got an item without barcode so I requested for assistance, then the staff offered to get another one for me, while I keep waiting and pressing yes for “do you wish to continue shopping?” He came back to cashier with the same item (I think it was the only one left) and “randomly” entered a price. I checked the price with the brand name on app, and saw the actual price, which is lower than the one he “randomly” entered. He was suspicious saying it is different location, then I switched to the right place to prove him the price. During this time, he even dropped the item without saying sorry. At least, I purchased with the correct price at the end, but felt disappointed and being fooled around.😡 I think the items display could be more organized and the carts in this location are really awful, they are in different brands or sizes, so sometimes it’s hard to pull out a cart. And mostly there are some up side down or looks problematic carts in the entrance of the store. The staff are willing to help but looks not quite motivated.

This 5 stars go literally for the service. The guy with glasses serving the aisle 23 is just an amazing human being. Making everyone feel comfortable with their shopping. So kind made my day

Has most of the items you would hope for from a grocery store but it sometimes misses out on quality. The fresh produce isn't so great and very few healthier options in the bakery items.

William rocks! I called late around 10:53pm on 7/29/23 & he was able to confirm inventory of this spice I needed! Happy to have employees like William actually ready to help customers unlike the employees at the ShopRite in Bayonne NJ.

I needed assistance at self checkout on Saturday 2/11, and I was helped by a lady called Hazel. She was gentile, kind, helpful, very respectful and cordial. She is an example of how excellent customer service must be. Thank you very much.

Tuesday I bought 1.5 pounds of shrimp. Went to cook with them on Wednesday. They were spoiled. I returned to Shop-rite, was offered refund on my credit card. Thursday morning, I notice I was charged again for the shrimp instead of credited. I go back to Shop-rite. I am offered a gift card. I don't want a gift card, I want the money refunded to my credit card. The "customer service" representative follows through, tosses the receipt at me and says "here you go". No apology or acknowledgment that Shop-rite is at fault, that I had to come to the store 3 days in a row. "Here you go".

Good place to shop. Needs little organizing though. Prices are reasonable and checkout is also smooth. They have a good variety of items. The carts section is awful. They should get new carts

I like the location, but I’m not a fan of the self-checkout line. They’re relying on it too much to where there’s often not a cashier available. Then the self-checkout like starts at lane 19 (since you can’t block the walkway), but oftentimes customers don’t know - so they cut/rush to an available register while strolling through the walkway if they see it and cause a lot of tension and frustration for the waiting customers, especially if you’ve been waiting for a long time. The line is also not fast, especially if you’re just waiting to pay for one or two items. I’ve had times where I put back my item’s because I didn’t want to wait in line anymore. I prefer if they would open more cashier lanes with human personnel. They should be able to afford it because their prices are not cheap (even the sale items are not really sales).

Put it this way, it's not there because they didn't make it yet, this place has everything and then some, the staff bends over backwards to present a stress-free atmosphere with personalized assistance

For me this is the best supermarket in town. Ok yes sometimes it is a little bit of crowded but they have good prices and variety.

Good place for groceries. Has a vast variety to shop.

They used to be a good place to shop, because everything is cheap. But now they rise their price again and again until they don't worth the money anymore. Also, be careful before you purchase eggs. Make sure you open the box to check every egg. I used to get broken eggs here, and the liquid ( I think just egg White) already dried. But anyway, they should clean their refrigerator. Especially the egg shelf. :)

Good prices, diverse and well stocked selection and friendly staff. Each week they feature a few local produce items which have been fresh, tasty and fairly priced.

This place is terrible. the bathroom is a dirty. The staff has no cutesy. The deli staff is overall the WORSE. They spend 1/2 of their time talking about their life with their co-workers instead of doing their job while customers wait 20-30 minutes to get 5 slices of ham. What a joke

I feel like every time I walk in it’s always chaotic. They do have a good variety of food, such a halal meats and some ethnic foods. Their workers are either incredibly helpful or they tell you they don’t know because they are new and walk away. There are also police officers at night time which I had never seen in a supermarket before. Different experience but I get what I need.

If you come after work, you'd better be prepared to swipe all your own groceries. By itself, that wouldn't be so bad but the shoplifting detection AI is the worst technology I've ever seen, and every 3 items you will have to wait two minutes for an employee to let you continue. Just awful

This a great place to shop for veggies, fruits and all other grocery items. The prices are also great. The only issue I faced was that the overall store is not very organized and it gets difficult to find the items you need. Also the surroundings of the store is not very great and kept clean.

As the main grocery store in JC, this location has a good selection of food and produce. However, it’s difficult to find shopping carts, lines are long and mainly self checkout, and the customer service is unfriendly (had to wait 15 mins for a free shoprite card and also had to show ID). The card is usually passed out at checkout lines for grocers like Kroger. As a monopoly, they have little incentive to provide better customer service.

It's nice over there but you have to pay for the recycling bag that was used to put the things you bought.
