Katharine
Graham
Memorial
Chapel:
It
falls
on
the
way
from
Gangtok
to
Kalimpong.
Considered
to
be
the
oldest
church
here,
the
chapel
was
inaugurated
on
24
September
1925,
and
was
dedicated
to
the
memory
of
Dr
Graham's
wife,
Katharine
Graham.
Kalimpong
is
a
famous
hill
station.
Which
connects
two
hills
Durpin
and
Deolo
and
is
situated
at
an
altitude
of
5,590
feet.
Mount
Kanchenjunga,
which
is
28,169
feet
high
and
the
third
highest
peak
in
the
world,
is
clearly
visible
from
Kalimpong.
The
Darjeeling
Tourism
Heritage
Commission
decided
to
give
heritage
status
to
this
old
chapel
in
February
2018,
and
the
work
of
its
renovation
was
started,
about
Rs
5
crore
was
sanctioned
for
this
project.
It
was
estimated
that
the
renovation
work
would
be
completed
by
April
18,
2018,
but
this
did
not
happen
and
it
is
still
under
renovation,
and
as
of
March
2019
it
was
almost
closed
to
tourists.
To
reach
the
church,
you
have
to
walk
a
long
distance,
starting
from
the
entrance,
through
a
road,
sometimes
through
very
narrow
and
steep
paths.
The
Scottish
style
houses
along
the
way,
with
the
hills
and
trees
around
it,
give
the
feel
of
a
Scottish
village.
On
the
way,
we
come
across
a
school
established
by
Dr.
Graham.
If
you
are
interested
in
history
and
social
service,
then
definitely
stop
here
and
see
how
Dr.
Graham,
with
his
courage
and
passion
to
improve
the
society,
transformed
a
small
plant
into
a
huge
tree.
