Great Mosque of Kairouan is located in the middle of the Medina and built by the Arab general Uqba Ibn Nafi in 670 AD. There is a huge square in the centre that can accommodate thousands of worshippers. The minaret opposite the prayer chamber is one of the tallest I've seen and is magnificent. As a non-muslim, I could not enter the prayer chamber which appeared spiritual and grand when peered through the entrance. Worth a visit

Tickets cost 12 dinar and find you access to five other local attractions. Visitors' clothing must be below the knee (so long shorts are ok). You can walk around the large, pretty courtyard, and can see into the prayer area, but cannot enter the latter.

This is the 3rd holiest site for Muslims to visit. The mosque is nice. It's size is impressive and some of the details of the building's exterior are lovely. But there are more interesting and impressive aspects of the city. As with all mosques, women must cover their arms, legs, and hair.

Here's my super review of most Kairouan and Tunis attractions and some tips: *first, if you haven't bought your ticket, my first advice would be to skip Tunis as a destination. Worst trip of my life overall. *second, do not trust all reviews nor all pictures, many pictures do not match in Google maps, you'll see what I mean when you arrive (but remember first tip) ***beware of scammers outside the mosque, they will insist on taking you to the Medina and walk next to you, they will act super friendly but after an unrequested "tour" he asked for 40 TND (like 15 euros), we told him we were not paying that much for something we didn't ask for, we ended up paying him 15 TND because he was getting super hostile. KAIROUAN Kairouan is one of the most sacred cities in Muslim religion, which kept my hopes high of finding something beautiful, but as usual in Tunisia, this city didn't fail to disappoint. Beware of pictures that do not match (people upload pictures of one mosque that belong to another, or fully edited unreal pictures). Great Mosque of Kairouan. Well. Just another plain mosque, nothing particularly special, cannot get inside but you can take a peek from the doors/windows. If you've been in Istanbul you're not missing anything here. And as usual there will be "guides" pretending to befriend you that will force you into being guided (they walk by your side and start telling you things and suddenly he is your guide and will end up requesting money) Mosque of the three doors. CLOSED. Small and a bit cute. Can see it from the outside only. Mausolée Sidi Sahbi & Zaouia of Sidi Sahabi. The first one was closed when we arrived, probably open at other times. The other thing is not particularly attractive. Worth a few minutes if your time. And that's pretty much it for Kairouan, you may see a few other things in travel blogs, good luck with that. TUNIS - Bardo museum: CLOSED as of April 2022. And will most likely remain close for a looong time. Thing is, there's a lot of politic unrest in Tunis (news we don't get in Europe) and the president recently dissolved the parliament (the parliament is in the very same building of the museum and the same reason of the terrorist attacks in 2015. - Monument of Kasbah, a nice monument without much history. Nothing much. - Zaytune Mosque. CLOSED if you're not praying. Beware of the super edited pictures in Google. A local tolds us sometimes you can pay to go into the yard, nothing much to see. - Medina (Tunis). Hell unleashed. One of the most uncomfortable moments in my life. Prepare to be harassed by the sellers and some randoms people pretending to try to help you, they will show you a thing or two against your will and then will try to charge you money. Awful experience. - Mausoleum Torbet el Bey. Probably the only good experience in my whole trip. It is still under construction and not open for visitors, but an elder guy was sitting there and when we asked if we could go in he gave us a guided tour (he closed the door so no other people could get in) and charged us 30 TND for both of us (well diserved though not pre arranged so very uncomfortable) - Municipal market. Interesting experience, we were being guided by our first mistake (one of those guys that pretends to help you from a good heart and because he was passing by. They are never passing by, they're looking for tourists) not a bad experience overall, you get to see flowers and fruits, nothing super special either. - Cathedral of St. Vincent. CLOSED. And not only that, surrounded by a barricade. There's policeman outside and technically forbidden to take pictures. It's nice to see, nothing particularly special.

A nice mosque what you will need to visit it. If you arrive so late, better to go to a carpet shop and ask them to let you go to the roof and watch from there. Many columns are from Ancient Christian temples. On some of them you can see even the cross.

It's symbol of Islamic heritage and culture. It's first Mosque in Africa built by the great warrior Ukba bin Nafi Ra. He born in Makka, grew up in Egypt and travelled from there to the west. He stopped his journey at the coast of Atlantic Ocean. If there would not be a ocean He might go so far with the mission of Islam. May Allah decree a place in Jannah.

This mosque is a giant, fabulous structure. Although as a non muslim I could not go in the prayer room, the door was open and I could look in, magnificent! The wooden doors are also spectacular in size and carving. Definitely worth a visit. We were lucky enough to be visiting during Qadr, the area around the mosque at night came alive, a real excitement in the air, was enjoyable to be part of it.

Impressive mosque, we’ll worth the effort. It costs 12 dinars to enter as a tourist, but this gives you access to a number of sites across the city. We went during Ramadan with no issues (although lots of sites shut at 2pm). Kairouan is also a very pretty place.

The mosque is part of the 12TND pp admission to 8 sites around town. The mosque is only open to Muslims. There is an interesting sunclock in the square. The mosque is very low-key, uncrowded (weekday in November), almost quiet. Square minarets is a bit strange. No visible washing stations. The guys running the place are friendly (especially if you speak some Arabic or French). It's just not a "wow" kind of place though. The ancient architecture is interesting but very square and sharp corners, box-like. There is a bunch of history around the site, some signs hinting at it. But best to do your homework before coming. Parking right around the corner, very good WCs at the parking lot as well. Drive inside the wall, get as close as you can, nobody cares, park as you like.

We visited this mosque on Friday to partake in the Jummah prayer. The opening and closing times are for visitors who are not making prayer inside the mosque but it is open all the time for muslims to pray. We arrived at around 12pm but we were advised that they merge the two afternoon prayers on a Friday and Jummah would be at 3pm. It is free to enter and look around but sometimes people outside approach you for a ‘tour’ and will then expect payment. You are also required to dress modestly if you wish to enter the mosque. The mosque itself is beautiful and being around so much islamic history was an amazing experience.

An amazing place in the Islamic world history. They close at 2 pm or 14:00 hours for visiting on weekdays.

Beautiful historic mosque...over a thousand years old. Definitely worth visiting. You need to cover legs and arms but they provide a robe if you don't have anything. Non-muslims can't enter the indoor area but the doors were open. The architecture is beautiful, taken from various Roman monuments.

Absolutely stunning mosque. A must see when in Tunisia. The architecture is amazing and stunning! We had the place to ourselves. You also get to see the inside of a mosque which you rarely get to see💚

Such a Great place to visit & feel inner peace, especially for those who are Muslims & want to pray inside. I liked the architecture so much & i was emotionally overwhelmed when i arrived there as i studied about it when i was child Egypt, & eventually i got the chance to visit.. it's for free if you're Muslim, if you're not you need to cover your body to go through the gate (Guards there have many women & men dresses.. you can use one of them).

You can get the general tourist ticket here after wandering through the medina. Have a look for the two holes in the courtyard one rainwater filters and drains into cisterns and then one that is for drawing water.

A place full of silence. A place full of solemnity. Incredibly beautifully decorated interiors. Fantastic example of the masterpieces of Islamic architecture. One of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world. The Great Mosque of Kairouan (called also the Mosque of Uqba) and their courtyard has an area of about 96875 square ft! The perimeter of his walls is 1329 ft. The height of the minaret is 115 ft. Due to the beauty of the architecture place wort a visit. I visited in September 2013. Best recommendations.

If you’re staying in Sousse, save yourself the money and catch the local louage to Kairouan for the day. Firstly, you’ll beat the crowds. When I arrived at the mosque, no one else was there so I had the place to myself. Secondly, you can explore at your own leisure and find yourself lost down many of the interesting twists and turns of Kairouan’s old city

SCAM ALERT! Hello everyone, I hope this article will be known and shared widely. We have contacted this guy since July of last year, his name is 𝐇𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐦𝐢 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐥 from KAIROUAN, TUNISIA and his company is 𝐇𝐁𝐉 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐂𝐄 𝐃𝐔 𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐄 or 𝗕𝗠𝗔 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗬𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗥. After checking his company's information (he gave us his company's documents, the current commodity pictures & videos, some latest BLs which showed his company was real and serious), both parties came to a deal for 1 trial container of PP BIG BAG SCRAP. Term of delivery is CFR. At the first time, we wanted to do 30/70, 30% advance on booking confirmation and the rest will be cleared against loading photos, BL, Invoice and Packing List. But this guy did not agree and wanted 30% advance to have cheque in order to show with his shipping company and make customs declaration then he could get the container. As mentioned, we checked his information company very carefully, so we accepted his demand despite having some worries. However, to ensure that this guy really wanted to work with us as well as reducing the unexpected risk, we made a request to him of $1,000 instead of 30% advance ( $2,139). He did not accept at that time but changed his mind the next day. Besides, he would like us to issue an engagement letter to make sure that there was nothing changed any more in our deal. It's ok with us. Then he asked us for many times to send the money. We transferred $1,000 for him as deposit on 18th of November. And it all starts from here. From 18th of Nov till now, he could not do get the booking confirmation, let alone taking the container. Then, he kept silent and did not let us know the situation until we contacted his fowarder. He admitted his mistakes and we wanted him to refund us our money of $1,000. But you know, this guy did not keep his words. He could not give us an acccurate day to refund. At the moment, our money is still pending with him. This guy is a fraud, liar and breaks his word always. He makes all of the excuse up to delay returning our money although he promised to do it many times. The information below is some documents about him and his company which we collect through the exchange process.

Historic place worth a quick visit, but rather small area accessible to visitors. Remember to save the ticket, as you can use it in other sights of the town.
