Reservoirs of water or plastic? Sad to see the locals even Toss their rubbish into the city’s water supply. This could be a beautiful site but unfortunately it’s not maintained people just through their plastic into the water

An interesting and strangely futuristic looking place just outside the old town. Huge, 9th century stone reservoirs built to supply the town with water. One of the seven or so 'attractions' you can buy a combined ticket for in the nearby tourist information centre (good toilets there too!). Definitely worth a look. There's good parking next to the entrance and you can easily walk into town from here. BTW this place seems to be open all day till 6pm but some of the other attractions are only open till 2.30pm (despite what Google says) so don't arrive late like we did if you want to go into the Mosques etc.

Incredible 9th century water reservoirs. Built by the Arabs, and not the Roman’s. There used to be 15 of the immense humongous reservoirs collecting rain water and other forms of river run off water for the city’s needs. These are over 80 metres in diameter and at least 20-25 metres in depth. The sheer scale and size of these reservoirs is incredible. There are only 2 of these massive basins left today, but we’ll worth a visit to see the sheer scale of these and that they were made with stone before concrete was invented. 12 dinar gets you into 7 locations in Kairouan. This was the first, the rest I will post soon.

It's historical water reservation systems thousand more years ago. Telling us how smart those people had done. If you study history you will like to how the system goes.

Decent park to visit with the family or friends and have a picnic. Better looking at sunset.

Worth a stop to visit. You need to go through security, and then past the 80-year-old shopkeeper dressed in amazing local costume. His shop is on the stairway up to the terrace.

Not much to see, just two big giant concrete modern-looking water reservoirs, the water long ago is dead (the city moved on to new tech). Only good thing is it's right next to the visitor center. Definitely visit here FIRST before plunging into the town.

It's part of the tourist office. If you're driving by you should see and interesting 3rd century water supply.

It's an interesting place and impressive water reservoirs in a well maintained relaxing park. Kids have a small playground and amusement park. It was no entrance fee at this time and could drive in by car.

The guide explained how the basin system worked and collected water via an aqueduct system. Difficult to imagine the engineering involved without using modern machinery. Not long needed here for photos but very interesting.

Not the greatest view unfortunately. The park at the basins seems barren. Also watch out for a store owner at the center at the basins who wants you to buy his mass produced pickle pear parfumé.

Two large basins of water, full of plastic waste. There simply isn't much to see here, and it was the least enjoyable sites available through the 12 dinar ticket (for six locations in Kairouan).

This historical site has lots of potential and the architecture is really interesting, but it's dirty and sad-looking and neglected, and has no signage or information.

Great history and great pollution, what a shame on such a site.

There's not much to see or do here. You can go in the building beside it to get an aerial view of them. We were able to find an excellent tour guide here to start our day tour of the city.

We visited as part of a tour. We weren't able to go in and explore the basins. We just viewed them from the tower. The area was really dirty with litter and rubish scattered all around. It's a shame because it took away a bit of the magic from the place. We were told it was down to a local political issue as to why it wasn't cleaned.
